To ask you to stop flying

We are facing a climate disaster. Our children will have to live through it. And yet I overheard two women today discussing how many holidays abroad they had been on this year. Both over 60 years of age. Obviously it will not directly impact on them.
This is also very common in my social group, people jetting off 4-5 times a year. Mini-breaks, weekends away, European trips, long haul, hen do's, weddings, birthdays. It's unbelievable how much people are burying their heads in the sand.

We need to stop flying. Urgently. Now. My family have not flown in over 5 years. We used to travel a lot, before we realised the consequences. I am putting this here, to make people think, we all need to urgently reduce (ideally stop) flying now.

That's why a credit system would be good because it would give people a little more flexibility to offset one choice against another..

Not sure it would. My sil married a very well off man they both drive electric cars. I am a single parent, my car is second hand, old and I cant afford a new more environmentally friendly one.

Is it fair that a rich family that can afford to have electric cars and charging points added to their home can then have a holiday?

Holidays dont really bother me so it's not a problem for me. And sil usually holidays here. It's just a example of the unfairness that will impact the poorer in society.

Emmapeeler · 06/06/2019 08:19

helpzibah for Brittany ferries you are supposed to turn up 45 mins before your ferry. We turn up about half an hour before and it’s not long before everyone is boarding. I love Brittany ferries! And they do good holiday deals.

omione · 06/06/2019 08:20

Sorry but no my flight twice a year to Shetland is a must. It will be a cold day i hell before i use the ferry

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 08:22

MsTSwift I agree to a point.

But given the OP is telling people flying is awful and if they dont stop, while having 2 cars and planning a third child, is probably what is causing people to get pissed off.

She has made changes she is happy with. But wants everyone to make the same decision she is happy with. Rather than us all making changes we are happy with.

Fridakahlofan · 06/06/2019 08:22

If you have kids old enough to understand ask them!

This is how much damage we will do to the world by flying this distance. Do you still want to go?

So a family of 4 flying to Nice and back will melt 64 square feet of Arctic Ice. Permanently.

Your family really will have a good time going on a lovely holiday without flying.

This thread is about personal flying - it goes without saying we should be doing as much as we can in all areas. And businesses too etc. And less kids. This thread is about flying though

AlexaShutUp · 06/06/2019 08:24

Holdthedamndoor, I get what you're saying about economic inequality affecting the choices that people can make, so perhaps there would need to be subsidies in place to help people make environmentally sound choices.

Sarcelle · 06/06/2019 08:24

No way. Embrace every opportunity to travel, by whatever method.

ImpracticalCape · 06/06/2019 08:25

Hi OP. The worst thing you can do for the planet is have kids and anything anyone does to try and offset carbon or plastic use is a drop in the ocean in comparison.

I don't have kids. I live off grid. I don't use single use plastics. I am going to fucking fly though.

Can you promise me you won't have any/more children? I think I've done my bit.

Not really. It's about the OP, she has made changes that suit her family and wanting everyone to follow suit. Because she thinks it's a good idea. She, however is causing a load of problems herself. But those changes dont suit her.

How someone can tell people they are awful for flying yet contemplate having 3 kids and have 2 cars that are regularly used, is beyond me and very relevant to the thread.

cranstonmanor · 06/06/2019 08:27

I won't stop flying. I do other stuff that is good for the envirement. Reduce plastic use, have a veggie patch, 1 car, no kids (but would love to have 1), recycle everything, wear clothes till they fall apart and can't mend them (we throw away clothes too easily). I will not give up on seeing my family in australia though.

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/06/2019 08:27

YABU considering the person I know who is always jetting off long haul to somewhere wonderful works for a nature conservation organisation yet has the hugest carbon footprint of anyone I've ever known. I'm not quite sure what he actually does to make things better other than come back and lecture everyone else on the error of their ways a bit like you are

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 08:28

ImpracticalCape I am not trying to be a dick. But how can you live off grid and be posting on the internet?

Genuine question, just dint know how that works. Smile

ImpracticalCape · 06/06/2019 08:30

@Holdthedamndoor we collect rainwater. We have solar panels for power. We use 3G?!

wonkylegs · 06/06/2019 08:31

OP I think the tone of your post really doesn't help your cause. Preaching that you know best tends to get a knee jerk reaction.
The best way to get people to make changes is to encourage and enable not preach.
Often changes can be painless but people think they will be harder than they actually are so we need to incentivise them to take those first steps.
This can be the role of the individual- show friends how easy a change has been, organisations - show their clients, users, customers that they are making changes which encourages them to do the same and then also government - who need to not just virtue signal (our current lot are good at this) but legislate and enable (but rubbish at this)
Have you made all the changes you can in your life, are you a good example in all aspects of your life or are you just picking something you personally find easy to change and lecturing other people at how they are wrong?
I do what I can and I try my best to do better as well as to encourage others to make changes that they can.

HepzibahGreen · 06/06/2019 08:31

Thanks emmapeeler! Have you gone to Spain on them or France? I was thinking about Portsmouth to St Malo or Caen but I know they go to Santander too. Just wondered if that's too long on the ferry. Hmmm. I like boats -dc not so keen!

Exactly.

ErichVonStalheim · 06/06/2019 08:32

If look at the website linked below, it will show you how many planes are in the air now. It is a lot. Apart from the odd glider, every one is pumping out fumes into the atmosphere.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 08:32

Thank you. We have solar panels that produce most of our electric. Just thinking about what else we could do. Grin

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 08:33

ErichVonStalheim is there one that shows you how many cars are making pointless journeys, with one person in?

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 08:33

Or even making journeys that do have a point but are not 'needed'.

onioncrumble · 06/06/2019 08:35

When I lived in Bahrain, I used to fly to Dubai every 2 weeks to get my extensions done. I probably wouldn't now but the OP makes me want to fly to the corner shop and burn kerosene on the BBQ. Although unlike the OP, I don't pollute my neighborhood by bbqing all the time.

By the way, the WW2 comment is vile.

BlindAssassin1 · 06/06/2019 08:35

Op is on a hiding to nothing. Its like a vegan telling a room full of omnivores to give up meat.....bacon though, but I could never live without cheese etc etc.

People will always find an excuse and wont be forced into anything that disrupts there lifestyle.

ImpracticalCape · 06/06/2019 08:36

@Holdthedamndoor where we live has no main water, gas or electric so it by necessity! Everyone has huge water tanks and every inch of rain is collected from roofs. Fed into the house by a pump. We are super careful with any utility and we use shower water for the plants and reuse grey water etc.

Xenia · 06/06/2019 08:37

Lots of people could never afford to fly in a month of Sundays. The worst thing any of us do for the planet is having a baby actually.
