Neighbours never cut their grass.

When I say never, I mean never. It’s a jungle out there. They are busy working people, I understand it’s hard to keep on top. We aren’t keen gardeners ourselves but manage to cut the grass and keep it looking half presentable.

They don’t maintain their garden at all. It’s causing all sorts of plants and brambles to grow through the fence into our garden which we can trim to a certain extent but both my kids have scatched themselves and recently our dog had a nipple injury - large scratch/cut after coming in from the garden. Obviously we don’t know for sure it’s that but she often jumps up to the fence if she hears other dogs/people/cats nearby (not that she can see them 🤣) and it seems likely she injured herself that way.

My kids have also accidentally chucked balls over there but you can’t see them to find them so we’ve just left them in there for now 🤣

I feel like helping them out with it but it will be a large job and myself and Oh lack the time nor are we keen gardeners ourselves.

Would you be annoyed??

I wouldn't buy next door to someone who clearly doesnt give a shit about their property...

In my case I didn't. I've lived here 30 years and when we bought, the garden at the end was well cared for. Three decades on, the lady is now widowed and old and doesn't have the money or ability to look after the space. I've attached pictures of what it's like.

I'd keep an eye out for rats etc. Any risk they're dumping rubbish on the garden or does it back on to anywhere fly tipping might be an issue?
You could give Env Health a call if you start to get vermin

Cheeseandwin5 · 05/06/2019 16:29

I am unsure how this impacts apart from when you/ DC/pets are messing about in their garden.
I suggest you either go round and make friends with them, that way you can better understand their situation. Also invite them round to your house so they can point out all the ways your are failing as a householder.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 05/06/2019 16:32

My ndn doesn't work (so had plenty of time) and his garden is horrific, the weeds and brambles are so bad they've basically torn down the hotchpotch of a fence he has, grown across the alley and started growing through and damaging our fence. We spent the whole of Sunday clearing it AGAIN. The alley is our land and responsibility and not a public right of access. DH went round to speak to him and he said he'd have a go at the garden the next day. He didn't. His is the only rental on the street and it's a mess, my other neighbour says he has been there for more than a decade and so the landlord doesn't pay any attention anymore. I'm trying to find out who the landlord is because I'm sure it will be in his tenancy to maintain the garden and if I were the landlord I wouldn't be happy that the fence has collapsed because of his lack of care. It's also pulled some of the guttering of his house (ivy and some kind of creeper) luckily the houses aren't attached.

I feel your pain OP

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 16:32

Of course I would be annoyed, and it WOULD be a problem to sell!

I assume they own the place, so I am not sure what you can do. Pretending to be panicked and warning them about vermin is a good idea.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/06/2019 16:32

It’s super eco friendly
Let it lie

Boysey45 · 05/06/2019 16:35

Mine was bad a few years ago, I was doing 12 hour days and a 4 hour commute in total. Plus at the weekend, 1 day I was doing work related stuff.
The neighbours kept mentioning it all the time and I told them I didn't have the time. In the end they did it and I bought them a bottle of gin as a thank you.

TheCatDidSay · 05/06/2019 16:38

Pop me their address and I’ll send some wild flower seeds for then for their eco garden Wink wildlife needs things to not be pristine.

Iwantacookie · 05/06/2019 16:40

Seriously do people worry about the state of other people's gardens?
Who cares what someone else's garden looks like?
As for offering to look for a gardener for them to pay is cheeky fuckery.
Ide tell you to fuck off then leave the lawn mower in the middle of the lawn to rust over.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/06/2019 16:40

I'd rather have that than some plastic grass or a sterile paved piece of land.

userxx · 05/06/2019 16:42

@Boysey45 A bit of neighbourly help and everyone is happy :)

fairweathercyclist · 05/06/2019 16:46

If they cant be arsed with doing something as simple as mowing the lawn and a bit of gardening, they are not going to be arsed about other things

Stuff and nonsense. I care about a lot of things, but I am not wasting my time mowing the lawn (in my case I have a DH to do it, if I didn't, I'd either pay someone, or get rid of the lawn).

Gardening should be an enjoyable hobby not a chore that you have to do to placate the neighbours.

userxx · 05/06/2019 16:47

@Iwantacookie Its not about worrying, its about when someone else's lack of interest is causing an impact on your property.

My friend had neighbours who let marestail go wild, she offered to help, she offered to buy weed killer but they just couldn't be arsed. Her garden and surrounding property has suffered now at a great cost.

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2019 16:47

Yes it's hugely unsightly and a haven for vermin.

I can't decide whether to laugh or not at rhe total bullshit someone once spouted that it's a "wild meadow" or a "haven for wildlife and a whole bunch of people who couldn't be arsed to maintain their gardens thought that was a brilliant excuse and trot it out like anyone actually believes it, we don't actually know they just can't be arsed and that they can actually see wildlife rats in amongst the brambles and crap. 🤣

On saying that though all you can do is trim the bits coming over your side. It's their shit hole and you need to leave them to it.

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 16:48

When you pay a premium to move into a pleasant area, yes, you do care when some CF start bringing the neighbourhood down. The least you expect is people keeping things as they are!

Orangeballon · 05/06/2019 16:52

I had a neighbour who was 93 years old, when he went out I would take my lawn more over and cut his grass. He never mentioned it but started leaving apples from his trees at my door.

Orangeballon · 05/06/2019 16:53

Spray the border with round up , it will kill the weeds coming through.

TheCatDidSay · 05/06/2019 16:54

The maintaining of a garden with horsetail is irrelevant it would of spread regardless. Over the counter weed killer cannot kill it. Do some research on to how old that weed is and how deep it’s roots grow.

Iwantacookie · 05/06/2019 16:54

How is a none cut garden bringing the area down?
My garden is the last thing I think about. Doesn't mean I'm lazy/dirty whatever.
It means I don't prioritise it highly in my list of things to do.

userxx · 05/06/2019 16:57

@TheCatDidSay I didn't say over the counter weed killer, it was the industrial stuff. Funny that the previous owners managed to keep it under check.

JemSynergy · 05/06/2019 16:59

No it wouldn't bother me because I have 6ft fences all around so I wouldn't see it.

elfycat · 05/06/2019 16:59

I have an untidyish garden. We mow the lawn every few weeks but the end and sides of our garden are a nightmare. One side is a rental property with an overgrown wildlife reserve of a garden (I'd like to take out one tree that blocks our light but apart from that I'm happy enough) and on the other is a community centre that keeps putting their compost heaps against the fences they've now put them into boxes since the last fix they did and their tree took out the end fence (ours) last winter. They cleared it up ASAP; I think to deny it was their tree that caused the damage - but I have pics. The stinging nettles are as tall as I am. The 20+ year-empty property the other side of the community centre was a jungle until recently. Things are growing wild and self seeding around us and any effort we make is practically useless.

And I don't mind a bit. We have tons of small birds nesting (3 types of tits, finches, blackbirds, starlings and robins and until this year we had magpies in a tall tree). Toads, bees, dragonflies, muntjac deer, hedgehogs and ducks are regular visitors - it's a small town centre location and I love sitting out. I'm going to put in a herb garden with a micro pond to encourage wildlife (no goldfish) and we always leave a pile of logs somewhere in the garden as a habitat for whatever. There might be mice out there but we've not seen rats. The river is a couple of streets over and they probably hang out there.

I want to keep bees but DH isn't keen. I've been pondering getting an allotment to grow a wildflower garden, with a herb patch, bee hive and a little shed to hide from the family in...

AnActualWoman · 05/06/2019 16:59

No, but there again I was that ndn for a while. Working and other things simply took priority. I mowed it maybe 3 times a year, never cut my brambles back (I liked them tbh) and never weeded either. Now I can afford an occasional Gardner which has helped.

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 17:00

How is a none cut garden bringing the area down?

Do you really think a completely abandoned and neglected garden is a feature?!

QuickQuestion2019 · 05/06/2019 17:02

Their garden, grass won't reach over the fence and eat you...

Seriously if this is all you have to worry about can I have your life?
