My 5 week old baby is currently sleeping. His last feed was at half 9 where he had a full 5oz of milk.

He appears to be in a very deep sleep and looks so content so I need to ask the question..

Should I wake him for a feed before I go to sleep or should I leave him to wake himself?

I'm a first time mum so not sure what to do! Tia

Forgot to add during the day he feeds bang on every 3 hours pretty much. I'm aware it's been almost 4 now since his last feed

Depends on whether you can sleep or not! If you can relax I’d leave him sleeping but if you’re going to lie there worrying I’d just feed him. As long as he doesn’t still have a touch of jaundice or anything, no harm having the odd 4-5-6 hr stretch if they will naturally do it.

HirplesWithHaggis · 05/06/2019 01:03

I'd leave him be, but expect to be woken soon. You never know though, my ds1 slept through the night (from 10pm till after 8am- how much did I panic when I woke up naturally? Shock ) at six weeks, after putting himself on a strict 2/6/10 o'clock regime practically from birth, so you might be lucky.

Ds2 was a different story. Grin

@Happyspud one part of me is saying wake him to feed and the other is saying leave him because he's become difficult to settle these past couple days!

I know some babies actually sleep through their hunger and there's a risk of their blood sugars dropping too low..

Not a mum but armfuls of niblings here and heard all the advice from my mum and the MILs. If he’s fast asleep and he went down with a full belly I would leave him to it. He will wake up soon enough and he will be nice and hungry and probably have a really good feed.
Congrats on the baby!!!

Happyspud · 05/06/2019 01:06

Has his growth been on track? If yes then don’t worry about the odd king sleep.

Anyway I almost guarantee the moment you make your peace with leaving him sleep and close your eyes he’ll wake up!

incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:07

@Happyspud yes growth fine, gaining weight as he should etc.

I just know as soon as I drift off he'll wake!

Happyspud · 05/06/2019 01:09

Go for it. He’s safe well and fine to sleep if he wants. Only wake if your boobs are killing you.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 05/06/2019 01:11

As long as he's not underweight or anything, I'd let him sleep. My children both slept through the night by the time they were about 5 of 6 weeks, which was great! Count yourself lucky if yours shows signs of being a good sleeper from an early age.

incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:11

@Happyspud he's bottle fed after a terrible time at attempting breastfeeding at the beginning!

My milk dried up so quickly, I haven't leaked or had sore boobs at all since he was about 10 days old Confused

incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:12

DM told me I slept through from 6 weeks so here's hoping DS follows suit

OP posts:
Happyspud · 05/06/2019 01:12

Fab! All good then. Bottle fed do tend to go for better stretches as they don’t break down the milk so quickly.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 05/06/2019 01:17

Let him sleep and you go to sleep!!

incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:20

Let him sleep, @incogneto as he's starting to figure out how to sleep through the night. Be glad. Be very glad.

As long as he has six wet nappies/24 hours all is well.

Bluerussian · 05/06/2019 01:34

Aw bless him. Let him sleep. You sleep too!

managedmis · 05/06/2019 01:35

Yeah let him sleep.

Sounds great GrinBrew

Hollyhobbi · 05/06/2019 01:36

Was he a good weight when born op? My first was 10lb 2ozs and even though I was bf I had tons of milk and she slept for 6 hours one night at about 3 weeks old. The midwife just said she had a big tummy and was after filling it so she was happy out!

SuckerForYou · 05/06/2019 01:38

Let him sleep. I always set an alarm on my phone for the absolute maximum I would let my baby go without a feed. I get some precious sleep then without any Mum worry!

incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:44

He's still asleep although I've heard some grunts come from him and he's moved a little bit. He's snoring now though! 🙈

OP posts:
incogneto · 05/06/2019 01:45

@Hollyhobbi he was 7lb 5 so on the small side I think!

Ihatehashtags · 05/06/2019 01:48

sirmione16 · 05/06/2019 02:07

If it's a one off I'd leave him. My boy has only ever woken in the night once since he was 5 weeks (so he'd feed at 9.30/10pm, then 3pm Ish then wake and start his day 7am) and never been an issue. He's nearly 5 months now and healthy as can be

sirmione16 · 05/06/2019 02:09

Oops your post just appeared! Lucky you though, you may have a good sleeper!
