AIBU to think FIFA doesn't actually care about the Women's World Cup?

Or it would at least put the photos up of the teams instead of blank icons?

Even the French team don't warrant it, and it's being hosted by France.

Yup, the men's one is just called the FIFA World Cup. I guess that's a result of it having significantly pre-dated the Women's World Cup but they should modernize and change the name.

Jemima232 · 05/06/2019 01:50

I'm not interested in watching women play football either, OP.

overnightangel · 05/06/2019 04:01

@FuckItFuckerArse basically you’re looking for attention and/or an argument (which you’re incapable of having sensibly). More fool me for biting. 2/10

sparkli · 05/06/2019 04:30

I have also emailed Fifa about the pictures. I don't think it's acceptable, either. However, I think we have to appreciate how far women's football has come in the past few years.

I have 1 DD15 who plays and 1 DD18 who is a referee. When DD18 started playing 10 years ago there were only a handful of teams out there. Now DD15s club has over 200 girls playing. DD18 has refereed in the Middle East and is being fast tracked to referee at the highest level. She has a good chance of being one of the 1st female refs in top men's games in the future, as well as women's. This would have been unthinkable 5 years ago.

The Women's game will keep rising and we will see more and more teams becoming full time professionals as support increases. This World Cup can only help to push the game on, especially as it's being shown on TV and the time difference means most people will catch at least some of it.

I’m enjoying the cricket World Cup atm which is amazing this year. Sorry but women’s football doesn’t excite me. Maybe they only spend money on something they know has a bigger following? It’s a bit mean, but they must’ve done their research to see what the interest is and then organised the tournament accordingly. They are trying to make money out of it, so only sensible.

Messyisthenewtidy · 05/06/2019 05:36

US women’s football is inspiring and an example of what all women’s football could be if given the proper encouragement, funding, attention etc.

Considering women’s football was actually banned here in the interwar years because it was considered too unladylike (the truth being it had become too popular) the least they could do is put some effort into making it as popular as it used to be.

Greyhound22 · 05/06/2019 05:49

I saw something about the women's team on the BBC Sport page on FB the other day and lots of men had put the 'laughing' emoticon 😕 just why?

I walked in to my DF, DB and DH watching the football not too long - realised later it was the women's match and they said 'well it's a better match to watch than the men'. (Meaning technically not for watching the women).

Has anyone contacted them to ask why the photos haven't been put on? Happy to do so.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 05/06/2019 06:16

Nobody really cares about women's football. The sports bars here have been advertising it constantly on all SM platforms. But go into anyone and there will be nobody attending to actually watch it.

I tried to watch it a while ago but it was boring.

JacquesHammer · 05/06/2019 06:22

Well there’s a stupid comment if ever there was one 🙄

ChinAirTakingOver · 05/06/2019 06:23

This.

It’s grown hugely in the US because it’s properly funded from grassroots level up. College soccer draws big crowds and international players get scholarships to American colleges to play for them.

Personally, I’m not a football fan (men or women) but my DD plays for a team and loves watching both the men’s and women’s game, so I’ve had to get a lot more up to speed on it all.

She saw the Womens FA Cup Final at Wembley a few weeks ago, which was brilliant. Stadium was packed and there were SO many girls who’d obviously come with their football teams. She is also off to see the Lionesses in France! So I’m pretty excited about this WC. And I agree. The website should be up and ready to go, no excuses.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 05/06/2019 06:28

Get real. Except a small proportion of people who do follow it the reality is that the wider population do not care.

There is no profit to be made showing it.
My company are currently trying to find ways to generate the Sam profit levels that they did during the football World Cup. You know. The millions and millions of ££s that was spent by the public.

It's not going to be the women's World Cup.

MN becomes a pocket echo chamber sometimes.
Go outside to the public and ask the people on the street.
I would bet you'd have more people who care about the cricket and tennis.

GreyBasket · 05/06/2019 06:37

Fifa don't care. They should.

Clubs have money they would like to put into young girls. At the moment the fifa rules don't allow them to incentivise girls in the same way as they can boys.

Let that sink it for a moment.

A young boy can get signed up, his education paid for, his training paid for.

It is so much more difficult for clubs to do the same with girls. They are not allowed to put the same amount of money into it.

The sooner that changes, the better.

JacquesHammer · 05/06/2019 06:51

So in fact not “nobody”....

Contraceptionismyfriend · 05/06/2019 06:53

I said "nobody really" meaning that on a whole.

But sure argue about the use of my language. Sure that'll change the proper toon of people who are even aware that it exists.

JacquesHammer · 05/06/2019 06:58

Sure that'll change the proper toon of people who are even aware that it exists

Plenty of people are aware it exists, and are looking forward to it.

So hence why your comment was wrong Smile

Contraceptionismyfriend · 05/06/2019 07:01

Plenty. So enough to keep everyone happy?

megletthesecond · 05/06/2019 07:02

The Observer had a World Cup pull out. I've already made a mental note to watch England on Sunday afternoon.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 05/06/2019 07:08

Well I'm looking forward to it. I'm surprised at the negativity on here towards it. We need to support women in sports as much as we can.

JacquesHammer · 05/06/2019 07:08

The Observer had a World Cup pull out

The Radio Times has a fill in wall chart Grin

RiversDisguise · 05/06/2019 07:16

I am oblivious to women's football (esp. not going to get interested if New Zealand are pretty shit haha) but agree that it's a shocker that the web site is borked for women and women only. These women give it their all for hardly any recognition and fuck they deserve a poxy web page.

Btw the Russia World Cup was a resounding success. Wonderful. Qatar is the truly ridiculous choice... what a shitshow it will be in that climate.

Bluebluered · 05/06/2019 07:38

Qatar is the truly ridiculous choice... what a shitshow it will be in that climate.

Which is precisely the point. It’s happening in Qatar because of money. Money is the reason why a tournament is promoted or not. If there’s no interest from the wider public then why would they inject money into something needlessly? I agree the shit show that will happen in Qatar will be ridiculous but they’re greedy for the money.

GrumbleBumble · 05/06/2019 07:42

Russia was a success but that doesn't stop it being a dodgy choice. When Blatter was asked if Qatar if the bidding process resulting in the Qatar win was fair and above board he didn't answer yes his answer was effectively no less so than any other winning bid. In other words we are as corrupt as hell and have been for years.
Don't forget his plan to raise the profile of the women's game was tighter shorts.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 05/06/2019 08:00

To be honest the benefit of Quatar is that more fans will stay home. As a result the money spent domestically will probably be higher than the previous WC.

RiversDisguise · 05/06/2019 08:18

Of course everything connected with FIFA and the bids is dodgy- no arguments from me

I dimly recall the FA bitching because Prince William and David Beckham had been promised , in backroom chats, votes that never materialised. They were essentially moaning that their rival bidders were even more corrupt than they were. Grin Twas years ago, though, may have misremembered the dramatis personae.

fairweathercyclist · 05/06/2019 08:29

I am not interesting in womens' football. DS however is, so I guess that is a win of sorts, although as he's got GCSEs at the moment any port in a storm to avoid revision I suppose.

I do think womens' sport is neglected. As an example, the Saturday Times has a 16 page sports section each week. You are lucky if there is more than one token article about a sportswoman.

The World athletics championships are happening in Doha for the same reason as the mens football WC is happening in Qatar...
