Amazon Being Unreasonable? WWYD?

Jemima232 · 04/06/2019 13:34

I bought a throw for the bedroom. It cost £20.00

I didn't like it so sent it back. There was nothing wrong with it but it didn't match anything. Sending it back cost me £5.00. So now I'm down a fiver.

The seller says they haven't received it. Amazon says that's too bad, and won't refund me the £20.00.

So now I'm down £25.00.

The issue is that I didn't provide the seller with any tracking information so they have no idea which parcel was mine when it was returned.

Have you tried giving them the tracking information? Presumably it shows as delivered and who signed for it.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/06/2019 13:37

so they are just supposed to believe you sent it back with no evidence?

TitusP · 04/06/2019 13:39

I'm not sure Amazon are being unreasonable here. They have well established return procedures where you can print return labels with your information on. Why should the seller take your word that one of the (I assume) many returns they have is yours?

Amazon despite to being an awful employer and not paying much UK tax tend to have pretty good customer service I've found.

Jemima232 · 04/06/2019 13:40

Actually, I lost the tacking information immediately (DH took the parcel to the post office and threw away the receipt) but I've sent countless things back and never been asked to prove it.

I've spent thousands on Amazon over the years.

I suppose it is my fault but it's very annoying.

@TitusP

I asked the seller for a printable label as that is how I'd sent things back before.

They said they were quite unable to do this (why, I do not know) so I just made a label and stuck it on the parcel. Therefore, there was no barcode.. So I figured it was the seller's fault for being intransigent and unhelpful.

CurtainsOpen · 04/06/2019 13:42

Lesson learned for next time then, eh?

Jemima232 · 04/06/2019 13:44

Aye, lesson learned - do not send anything back if the seller is constitutionally incapable of providing a label which contains a barcode.

Duh.

Ugh I feel your pain, that is so annoying!
Not sure you can do much but you could keep on at them to see if they will refund you half as a goodwill gesture or something.
So annoying to think the seller might have got it back but noticed no tracking so could be taking advantage of that.
My BIL sold a brand new apple i watch on eBay but entered the tracking info with one digit wrong, the buyer claimed he never received it and so my bil had to refund even though he was sure he was scammed.

BritInUS1 · 04/06/2019 13:48

You didn’t prove the tracking information and then lost it, that’s not amazon or the sellers fault - it’s your own

Jemima232 · 04/06/2019 13:52

I think my issue is this:
Over the years I've sent back loads of parcels and not once has a seller waited to receive the merchandise before issuing a refund.

It's just Sod' Law that on this one occasion, I've lost the sodding tracking information. I always keep it (but obviously didn't, just this once) so I'm fed up.

OP posts:
coral13 · 04/06/2019 13:54

When you request a return the correct way on Amazon, it generates a barcode and returns ref to put inside the parcel. This happens whether you need to pay and arrange for the return or not.

If you've sent something back and not kept the tracking info and not put anything inside to let the seller know it's from you then it really is your fault.

coral13 · 04/06/2019 13:56

There is a difference between buying from Amazon themselves and buying from another seller on Amazon.

Amazon will refund you when the tracking has been scanned so they know it's on it's way back. Other sellers won't, the same way Asos and most other businesses wouldn't.

NeatFreakMama · 04/06/2019 13:56

I can see why you're fed up but I don't think they're being unreasonable. You chose something presumably without looking at it if it didn't match anything, sent it back and it got lost and you don't have tracking information. I think chalk it up to experience.

hazell42 · 04/06/2019 13:57

You can also get non printable labels on Amazon. They just scan the barcode and you'd have a record on your phone.
Definitely the way to go in the future

StCharlotte · 04/06/2019 14:06

Did you put a note with the order number or anything in the parcel when you returned it?

LadySainsburySeal · 04/06/2019 14:10

I've spent thousands on Amazon over the years

And? That doesn't give you any preferential treatment! You have the same rights and responsibilities for online buying as someone making their first purchase.

DontCallMeShitley · 04/06/2019 15:07

I stopped using Amazon sellers as the last one said they wanted a faulty item back to test before refunding, sent back at my expense.

I will rarely use Amazon as a company to buy anything as I bloody hate them and they are no cheaper than elsewhere so will buy elsewhere unless I really can't find it.

If they weren't trying to take over the world I might feel differently but they are in everything and have played a large part in the closure of many small businesses and shops.

But, yes it was your fault, unfortunately, for not providing tracking for the parcel because even if the seller was pulling a fast one, you could have got the refund.

You are being unreasonable for using Amazon though, it's a shit company.

melj1213 · 04/06/2019 17:12

You bought via a third party fulfilled by Amazon, didn't send it properly, you didnt provide the returns information, you didn't keep proof of return and yet it is Amazon's fault you haven't been refunded?

YABU - I have spent thousands on Amazon over the years and have never had an issue returning items and they have always been very helpful - even when it was my mistake that caused the problem - but they are not in the wrong for following their returns policy.

TruffleShuffles · 04/06/2019 17:19

I think my issue is this:
Over the years I've sent back loads of parcels and not once has a seller waited to receive the merchandise before issuing a refund.

Really? I have never received a refund before the person or company refunding has received the item back. Why on earth would anyone refund you on your say so that you are sending something back?

Sugarplumfairy65 · 04/06/2019 18:05

Yabvu
Your fault that you lost the tracking info. I sell on Amazon handmade. I would never process a refund until I had the goods returned to me, nor do we send out return labels. Most people have enough common sense to put a note in the package or the copy if the delivery note so I know who its from

Greenyfingers · 04/06/2019 18:17

Just buy something else from the seller and when it arrives claim you never received it and get them to send you another (preferably of value of £20). That way you're squared up.

Fight fire with fire I say.

Chances they never received it are slim, they're chancing imo.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/06/2019 18:39

So, not dan Amazo purchase but from an individual seller and you just stuck it back in the post with no identification at all? And your DH lost the receipt.

I'd sit myself down for a stern talk and be grateful it was only £25.00

FuckMNDoubleStandards · 04/06/2019 20:18

Actually OP, there's only one person in the wrong here and it's you. It's common sense to keep proof of return with you until the package arrives at the destination.

Imagine if you were the seller, you would want proof it had been returned otherwise people can just BS they've returned something.

A lesson to be learned to be less careless.

FuckMNDoubleStandards · 04/06/2019 20:20

@Greenyfingers That's fraud/theft and awful advice to give to anyone. Have a word with yourself! Hmm

Fortunately most sellers provide tracking so your deceit would not happen as delivery can be proven.
