I’ve read a good few threads on this point and they’ve provided me with many an hour’s quiet entertainment! But they’re all now quite old, and I’m interested to know if trends/tastes have changed. So, is anyone willing to share your most loved/hated home décor trends or items? And are there any items – useful or useless, beautiful or ugly – you've always wanted and never had; no matter how kooky they may be?

I’ll stick my head over the parapet and start …

Likes

Inglenook fireplaces, wood burners, old parquet flooring, New England colours, natural, textured surfaces (wood, granite, exposed brick), old monk’s benches/chapel chairs, oversized lanterns, hammocks, cocoon chairs, bookshelves, masses of books, blend of traditional and modern styles, chandeliers, silvers and greys (gulp), hot tubs (OK so shoot me!)

Dislikes

Glass doors (including those bifolding things), murals, decals, notices and signs, brass pineapples, glitter (on anything), magnolia, Venetian or vertical blinds, glossy kitchens or furniture, ‘pops of colour’ (and the phrase, too), Swiss cheese plant print on anything, the ongoing fad for blush pink, especially when paired with green. (Yes, I’m looking at you Ideal Home).

Most wanted items: Longcase clock (but I want a Mora one; battery powered as the old mechanisms are too unreliable) and a laundry chute!

Love:
Universally hated on mn but I love Grey with a wacky accent colour to pop, hot pink/ orange etc in both decorating and accessories

Hate: wallpaper that have retro patterns on that let's face it, look like loads of vulva on your walls Confused

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/06/2019 21:24

I hate metro tiles. They remind me of public toilets.

Likes:
Some grey; big walk-in showers; peacock blue; patterned wallpaper (so sue me!); colour contrast alcoves; I like that mixed-up Spanish tile thing but think it's waaaaay overdone; free-standing baths; stripes in bright colours; bookshelves everywhere; bright coloured sofas and cocktail chairs

Dislikes:
But not everything bloody grey; Word slogans a la 'Live laugh love' etc, overly hotel-like bathrooms; patterned 'feature' walls; brick photoprint wallpaper - overdone and too often used badly; homes with bathrooms for every single bedroom, it's really not necessary; that sort of self-conscious identikit 'wackiness' mooted by mid-range interior designers (Oversize Banksy/graffiti/skull prints, chandeliers and industrial filament lamps, flock pug lamp stands, Starck Ghost Chairs, lots of monochrome and shiny finishes and 'ironic' velvet curtains); shiny finish kitchens

I have a strange love for glass bricks, but I can't imagine we'll ever use any. I'd really like to have at least one room painted a bright non-neutral colour but I don't think DH will allow it, as he gets totally paranoid that it'll make rooms look 'pokey', although most of the rooms in our house are pretty big and very tall!

SparrowBo · 03/06/2019 21:32

Four dark painted walls (make me feel claustrophobic.)
'Hotel' style bathrooms (so pretentious)
Kitchen cupboards with no handles
Leather covered dining chairs
Glass tables
Any Cath Kidston style stuff.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 03/06/2019 21:35

Vulva wallpaper is a horror I can't even imagine!

Love peacock blue, though.

I hate open plan and boring bathrooms that look like hotel bathrooms. Also hate mirrored furniture

I like dens basements loft rooms
Cosy colours and stuff that’s easy to clean

Crinkle77 · 03/06/2019 21:38

Hate those those hearts that people hang round their homes and crushed velvet furniture/head boards etc..... Don't get open plan living either. It must cost a fortune to heat. Don't get an suited either. As far as I am concerned it's another bog to clean.

Halfling · 03/06/2019 21:40

Dislike
Glossy kitchen, glossy flooring, metro tiles, industrial style metal furniture, pineapples, huge photos on display in the sitting room, leather sofa, vertical blinds, mirror finish on furniture

Like
Matt/chalky finish, yellow and olive accents, house plants everywhere, soft furnishings - curtains, throws, cushions and rugs, natural materials

MollyHuaCha · 03/06/2019 21:41

Like: lots of lawn, trees, colour themed gardens, huge pots and planters

Dislike: decking/paving where there should be grass, barbecues, gaudy garden furniture, ornamental wells and arches

SpanglyPop · 03/06/2019 21:41

Wtf wallpaper looks like vulva?!

7Days · 03/06/2019 21:42

I like white and wood together. Things that are deep blue or green. Home made stuff even crappy knitted cushions with dropped stitches. I love the look of natural materials, like old worn stone flags,
Or old parquet floors but cleaning them would kill me. Thick skirting boards.

I dont like pictures on the wall, just one lonely picture too small for its place and hung too high.
Exposed light bulbs, or those wire lampshades.
Flamingos/pineapples/ anything faddy like that.
Anything too high gloss or mirrored. I do like blues and greys but it often looks too cold. I dont like wallpaper etc in brick effect.

fancynancyclancy · 03/06/2019 21:42

Love wallpaper but not meek feature walls. Love individuality & where a home suits its occupants. Regardless of decor style I like homes to be cosy & welcoming.

Dislike Mrs Hinch style grey/glitter with cheap chandeliers, tacky. Hate words on walls, black & white murals of homeowners. Frilly curtains with swag things (think that’s what they are called).

TurquoiseAndPurple · 03/06/2019 21:44

Tchotchke's. Can't be doing them!

TurquoiseAndPurple · 03/06/2019 21:44

With* them 🙄

overthehorizon · 03/06/2019 21:44

Dislikes:

Grey, sparkly, fluffy shite look. It looks dated already. Words on walls. "Art" that's colour coordinated with the sofa. That shiny, white laminate stuff.

Likes: original features, natural wood, good quality fabrics, wooden floors and simplicity.

fancynancyclancy · 03/06/2019 21:46

In terms of gardens, gnomes can work with certain house but this sort of thing? Noooooo!

overthehorizon · 03/06/2019 21:47

Also hate decking and plastic grass. Why buy a house with a garden and then smother it? Vile.

hammeringinmyhead · 03/06/2019 21:48

Likes: Grey bedding, prints of photos of places I've been, white walls, corner sofas, actual kitchens (not a few cupboards in the corner of the living room so they can say it's open plan)

Dislikes: Open plan, cheap fake grass, curtains that aren't eyelet, patterned stair carpet.

meuh · 03/06/2019 21:49

I dislike wood burning stoves and fake grass. Both big trends where I live.

fancynancyclancy · 03/06/2019 21:50

I don’t mind astroturf, very popular in my neck of the woods as gardens are small.

PenCreed · 03/06/2019 21:51

I hate open plan. I don't want my dinner guests to see me cooking, or to look at a pile of dirty dishes when I'm eating, nor do I want my living room curtains to smell of whatever I've been cooking for days. I also dislike spotlights in every room (they're ok in the kitchen) and period houses which have had the soul ripped out of them by people who should have bought a new build. Everything being perfectly matched and looking like a furniture showroom.

Like: colours, bookshelves, a few items with personality (but not cluttered), soft lighting.

Mxyzptlk · 03/06/2019 21:53

Dislike - Orla Kiely prints, retro stuff (being old enough to have been there first time round), living room in shades of beige, ensuites, curtains or blinds blocking out light, full-length glass doors (top-half glass is fine).

Like - space, lots of daylight, open fire.
Always wanted a heated towel rail, may get one yet.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 03/06/2019 21:53

Plantation shutters!

I've really had it up to the eyeballs with grey.

Hate all the paved over front gardens in London and agree with pps about plastic grass.

I don't like big fugly kitchen extensions into the side return either.

God knows why I live where I do.
