To think people should take naming their children seriously?

Do they not imagine their name choice on the top of a CV or whatever when naming their child 'Ballerina' or 'Buttercup' or 'Tulip'. I find it tends to more girl names than boys.

Well we shouldnt judge by names but we do...I can imagine pancake and swizzle had a shit time at school...child cruelty in fact.

Some countries even ban names.

LaurieMarlow · 03/06/2019 18:59

Do these people not realise they grow up and unusual makes them stand out for the wrong reasons?

The only one I’d raise an eyebrow at from that list is Princess.

malificent7 · 03/06/2019 19:00

I so love the African bames such as Blessing and Precious...they are so heart warming and beautiful.

LaurieMarlow · 03/06/2019 19:01

These are cultural

Why do they get to be ‘cultural’ and white (and indeed black) working class choices don’t?

Nancydrawn · 03/06/2019 19:01

Ignoring the OP as generally classist claptrap, can I echo the point re: email addresses? We all understand that unless you are Peekaboo Street, you have not chosen your own name (and really, having a toddler choose her own name is basically a parental decision).

But I've gotten applications from addresses like lovesweed69, something created (ostensibly) without parental involvement, and it is very hard to take the applicants seriously.

TheAverageJuror · 03/06/2019 19:03

Shiraz is not after a wine.

Mitzicoco · 03/06/2019 19:03

Seriously, what are wrong with names like Luna?'

Neckercheiftheif · 03/06/2019 19:03

Africa is a continent not a country - it’s like saying there are ‘European’ names. Do you mean like Angharad or Charlotte?
Precious will be perfectly common in Nigeria but perhaps not a thing in Eritrea.
Different strokes for different folks

userabcname · 03/06/2019 19:04

Haha this reminds me of when I was pregnant with DS and DH tried very hard to persuade me that Hades would be a brilliant name! Needless to say, that is not his name!!
I don't mind unusual names on the whole though - I actually quite like some of them.

nakedscientist · 03/06/2019 19:05

In my work I wouldn't think it was appropriate or fair to look at anyone's name, on paper, and make a judgement about them.

BUT, having said that, ridiculous or 'sexy' email addresses are a massive no no!

DreamsOfDownUnder · 03/06/2019 19:05

@TheAverageJuror sisters called Shiraz and Chardonnay? Where do you think they got the names from?

OP posts:
RomanyQueen · 03/06/2019 19:06

I know a Jennifer taylor who likes being called jenny Grin she must be so embarrassed.

LaurieMarlow · 03/06/2019 19:06

Hmm if I was going to have another child I might try to make Riesling happen. Grin

DreamsOfDownUnder · 03/06/2019 19:07

I don't dislike all unusual names, some are lovely! Just ridiculously silly name, fucking Pancake for crying out loud is not 'unusual', it's just stupid!

AllFourOfThem · 03/06/2019 19:07

I’m a lot more concerned with someone’s ability and personality when it comes to employment. I also suspect that names that seem a bit unusual now, won’t be in a generation’s time which is when these CVs will be written.

I have a friend called Scheherazade and she goes by Zadie. It’s a beautiful name.

GabsAlot · 03/06/2019 19:09

Pancake? well it might cheer me up if i was in hospital

crazyasafox · 03/06/2019 19:10

@Rainbowknickers

Most of the names you mentioned (in your post at 18.57) are OK. Confused

PLUS, if soooo many people are giving their kids unusual names now, then in the (not too distant) future, all these 'offbeat' names will be 'the norm.'

Like 20 years ago, many people would frown at and judge girls/women with tattoos - but now, sooooooo many have them, and most people don't bat an eyelid at women with tattoos...

These days, if employers were to judge/cast out women with tattoos, they would be turning away around two thirds of the applicants!!!

I think it's going that way with forenames.

Marinkazurie · 03/06/2019 19:10

Do these people not realise they grow up and unusual makes them stand out for the wrong reasons?

My DD's name is on that list Grin

crazyasafox · 03/06/2019 19:11

I mean, with many employers; more 'unusual' names are accepted as OK/normal (like tattoos now are by many.)

Ploppymoodypants · 03/06/2019 19:13

The thing is, a decent employer should have a system whereby the recruiting officer can’t see the name, age, gender or ethnicity of the applicants, to exactly avoid these sort of prejudices.

MissConductUS · 03/06/2019 19:13

Condoleezza Rice

Her name is more clever and cultural than trendy or hippy. It's from the Italian musical term, con dolcezza, which means with sweetness.

My all time favorite is Moon Unit Zappa.

LadyRannaldini · 03/06/2019 19:14

But someone being called Buttercup isn't a valid reason not sure give them equal respect or job opportunities

But in the world of real non-navel-gazing people it would happen! Presumably if the off-spring wants to be taken seriously they would escape their parents' pretension and change it.
Someone once said Imagine he/she was Prime Minister!Maybe at the moment having a name that stands out in a crowd would be an advantage.

Justanotherlurker · 03/06/2019 19:14

In my work I wouldn't think it was appropriate or fair to look at anyone's name, on paper, and make a judgement about them.

We don't but we do on email addresses, considering the amount of available free ones we get a shocking amount of badly chose email addresses and it is unusually not males.

I work as a senior dev for a global software house, so there is admittedly a bit prejudice.

malificent7 · 03/06/2019 19:15

Names i can see in the future..
Prosecco
Gin
Sansa
Aria
Tyrion
Thor etc...

Names that are downright cruel :
Adolf, Gaylord ( Focker) , Moon unit..

I mean...awful!

AyahuascaTrip · 03/06/2019 19:18

Aria has been a name for a long time! Eg: Saint Aria of Rome
