Husband Spasming at Night

Hoping for some advice because I am at my wits’ end over this!

Do you ever get that feeling when you’re drifting off to sleep and then your whole body spasms / jerks and you feel like you’ve been falling?

Multiple times per week, my husband will have nights where this happens over and over and over again. He is somehow sleeping through it (Christ knows how) but it makes the entire bed jump, and it essentially destroys any prospect I have of falling asleep until he’s over it (which can take up to an hour). By the time he stops, I’m so jangled that it takes me ages to fall asleep.

I’ve started sleeping in the spare room when he does this but it’s happening so often that it’s not really a feasible solution, and in any event I don’t sleep that well when I’m in bed on my own anyway.

Is there anything we can try to stop him doing this? He feels awful but he’s totally unaware that he’s doing it. It doesn’t seem to be affected by the position he sleeps in etc, and it hardly seems like a medical issue. It’s just happening so often now that I don’t see how we can keep sharing a bed unless we find a solution!

I was going to suggest restless legs syndrome but I see PP already have. I think it could definitely be a possibility.

I used to have this after reading the above replies I'll definitely get it checked if it happens again.

I read somewhere (probably online and not reliable) that it's when your brain falls asleep before your body and the sudden shudder is your body suddenly getting in sync, happens if you go to bed too tired so now I try and go to sleep before I'm completely exhausted and it's stopped but could be coincidence.

Is it only when he's falling asleep or through the night too because you could just give him an hours head start.

Does he bite while he's sleeping his tongue or side of mouth?

Memory foam mattress & super king size bed.... may well have saved my marriage! Grin

I’m epileptic and the amount I twitch in my sleep increases significantly before a seizure. I started similar twitches a few months before first starting to have seizures (at 18) so I would say it’s actually worth monitoring and getting checked.

Thanks so much everyone, loads of really good advice.

He drinks a lot of coffee so cutting down on caffeine could definitely be a help. Will also suggest he goes to the gp to rule out anything more sinister.

My OH does this! He usually only does it if hes overly stressed at work or worried about something.

I usually just gently wake him up and roll him over, usually a snuggle calms it.

How about trying a banana an hour before bed for a while as an easy 'possible solver' whilst you're waiting on appts. Boost his magnesium?
