to ask if anyone else is plagued by moths?!

I've nc for this so people don't think I live in a hole Blush

My house is filled with moths. Not the big butterfly ones, these wee brown shitty things. Allegedly clothes moths, although I've never found any sign of them eating my clothes. They just fly about and bug the crap out of me. Spiders I don't mind, but moths give me the creeps. Flap flap flap in your face. Hate them.

There's a local moth removal company I'm going to call to see if anything can be done. I know they live under carpets and rugs, but I don't have a rug and I have no idea what room they are coming from. Going to need professional help before I go mad.

Anyone else had this problem? Or do I actually live in a hole?

Yes! I thought they were too big for clothes moths, and I've noticed more crawling on the outside windows wanting to get in, than actually in the house.

Notcontent · 02/06/2019 23:34

I get this. Not huge numbers but they really annoy me given that they have nubbled on some jumpers in the past.

Notcontent · 02/06/2019 23:35

That was meant to say nibbled!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 02/06/2019 23:46

Yes we had those, the landlord ended up having to get someone out twice to get rid of them.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 03/06/2019 00:17

Check under your static furniture- they like to lay eggs in dark carpeted places where they aren’t disturbed.
When I moved out of a rental property we found them under the chest of drawers, wardrobe and under the feet of the bed 😱
They had eaten tiny 0.5cm holes in the carpet!

WarmthAndDepth · 03/06/2019 00:36

Yes, periodically. I also have cats and have noticed that the moths have disappeared the few times I have treated the house for fleas. I usually use boric acid for fleas (buy a big box of the powder from a good chemists, sprinkle all over floors and soft furnishings, leave for a few days while you're all away, including pets, then hoover up / wash out on your return) and whenever I came back home I'd notice the moths were gone. Last time I treated the house for fleas was at Cristmas and I used Indorex for a change. Now I haven't seen a moth since then, and all other housey creepy crawlies have also disappeared, which I find a bit disturbing...

Muddlingalongalone · 03/06/2019 00:40

Yes I get these periodically. I bought a carpet spray from Amazon which seems to keep them at bay as long as I remember to do it every 3 months as opposed to forgetting until they turn up again
Little fuckers get everywhere, but don't eat clothes.

Attache · 03/06/2019 00:46

We have these, but they chew big bare patches at the edges of our carpets.

They must be eating something if you have loads of them. Have you checked under beds, bottoms of sofas, piles of linen, carpet under bookcases - anything soft but a bit out of sight?

DontCallMeShitley · 03/06/2019 00:54

Webbing moths like carpets, they are the darker moths, the lighter silvery and pale gold ones are clothes moths.

Indorex, Acclaim and a few other flea treatments with get rid of them if used regularly ( used to be a year but the cans now say 6 months) but yes, it does kill everything else, sadly spiders and bees but on the good side also carpet beetles/woolly bears.

To really get rid of them you need to wash fabrics and seal them in bags and spray under all furniture, in cracks and check for dust bunnies.

TreacherousPissFlap · 03/06/2019 00:54

We have carpet moths, our neighbours on both sides have carpet moths, our friends down the road have carpet moths. It appears we live in a village popular with carpet moths.

I squish them when I see them (and I'm not like that normally) but I can't get too her up as it's just the carpets. We haven't any downstairs and the ones upstairs have seen better days, when we replace them i might be a bit more anxious Grin

cheeseislife8 · 03/06/2019 00:55

We have these, I NEED to have windows open so the little fuckers all come in for a party! Drives me bonkers

Attache · 03/06/2019 01:00

The only upside is it makes it easier to choose carpets next time. Polypropylene all the way!

TeddiesAreEverywhere · 03/06/2019 01:02

Yes! I’d been seeing them for months, mostly in my bedroom. Kept killing them but couldn’t figure out where they where coming from. All clothes where fine, not holes etc. Bought some sticky traps which worked quite well. Still kept seeing them, but was getting less and less, then last week I decided to rearrange my bedroom and all along the edge of my carpet is worn away patches but when I moved my (divan) bed, there was a huge patch of carpet all eaten away. It’s horrible. There seems to be hardly any now since I’ve sprayed the affected areas. Getting my new carpet fitted tomorrow as my current one is completely ruined. Also getting rid of my divan bed as I read they can be bad for moths.

You need to check under furniture, especially furniture that tends not to be moved. Apparently when they’re at the stage of flying about/crawling on the walls, it means there’s too many and they’re looking for somewhere else to go.

Hearthside · 03/06/2019 01:03

Yes we have them .We leave our back door open before we go to bed when it is warm and bedroom and bathroom window .Then they get in and no way i can catch them Sad.

Cruelstepmother · 03/06/2019 01:09

@WarmthAndDepth "all other housey creepy crawlies have also disappeared, which I find a bit disturbing..."

blimey, how many creepy crawlies is normal? My house is a filthy tip and I leave windows and doors open and I've only seen about 3 ants (which I stomped on) and a couple of flies so far this year!

Cruelstepmother · 03/06/2019 01:11

Maybe my impressive cobwebs are a plus point after all? Blush

GlitterPixie · 03/06/2019 01:14

My apartment is absolute infested with these moths at the moment 😷

GothsNotMoths · 03/06/2019 07:59

Oh so they might be carpet moths! They are the dark brown ones - not the shiny ones. And like I say I have never seen any evidence of them eating my clothes.

I do have a divan bed, although I don't tend to see them in the bedroom much. However there is a chest of drawers in the hall and that's where I normally find them flying about - so that might be the culprit.

Gadz. I really don't want to move it to find out 😂

OP posts:
Mauhea · 03/06/2019 08:08

Yup, they're everywhere - it's mostly my fault and I know it! Between the massive floordrobe and lack of hoovering they're getting an all you can eat buffet out of me Blush

Attache · 03/06/2019 10:40

Sorry OP, they do sound like the carpet ones. You can sometimes spot empty pupa cases attached to the walls near/above the bare patches.

Etino · 03/06/2019 11:16

Just rolled an expensive rug and waiting for it to be collected later today- moths have chewed where it was under the sofa.

YouJustDoYou · 03/06/2019 11:23

We had them - found all the eggs and shells in every inch of our carpets, it was vile. Ended up having to rip out every carpet, the fuckers had hatched everywhere.

YouJustDoYou · 03/06/2019 11:23

Carpet and cloths moths are the same thing. They eat wool and natural fibres.

YouJustDoYou · 03/06/2019 11:24

Look inbetween the carpet fibres - if there's loads of little pale balls that's all their eggs.

ncdforthis · 03/06/2019 13:08

Ive got a massive moth problem and I can't work out where they're hiding and laying eggs. I don't have carpets and there isn't that much stuff in my flat so I'm really not sure.

Has anyone had any luck with moth killing products?
