to ask if anyone else is plagued by moths?!

I've nc for this so people don't think I live in a hole Blush

My house is filled with moths. Not the big butterfly ones, these wee brown shitty things. Allegedly clothes moths, although I've never found any sign of them eating my clothes. They just fly about and bug the crap out of me. Spiders I don't mind, but moths give me the creeps. Flap flap flap in your face. Hate them.

There's a local moth removal company I'm going to call to see if anything can be done. I know they live under carpets and rugs, but I don't have a rug and I have no idea what room they are coming from. Going to need professional help before I go mad.

Anyone else had this problem? Or do I actually live in a hole?

They sound like carpet moths. The bastards ate holes in our bedroom carpet - only discovered when we were moving some furniture to decorate Angry Bought some moth killer spray off eBay that seems to have done the trick. Thorough hoover first, all carpet edges, move stuff if you can. Good soaking with spray, leave to dry. Fingers-crossed, we haven’t had any problems since. We do a respray every so often just incase.

PivotPivotPivottt · 03/06/2019 18:46

I've noticed a few in my bathroom didn't think anything of it. I've not long moved in to this house and have never really had them before in previous houses.

WarmthAndDepth · 05/06/2019 18:42

Cruel, we get spiders in the house (old) and 'nice' pollinators in the conservatory where we grow a lot of plants, little beetles coming in from outside and that sort of thing. Since the Indorex everything that comes into the house dies Sad. Obviously pleased not to have fleas anymore, but wondering what the hell is in that stuff...

I've used fumigators, bought from Amazon last year as well as spray afterwards. Used them twice in each room, two weeks apart and all been clear so far this year

I had this once, bought a lovely wool carpet for a bargain price from a well know retailer. Had it fitted throughout my whole house bar bathroom and kitchen. I had lived in the house for 5 years with no issue. Had polypropylene carpets. A few months later I started noticing moths, running around the ceiling and generally flying about. I googled as you do and thought clothes moths. I checked all wardrobes clothes etc, no signs of any holes or issues. Put it down to having the windows open and lights on. Decided to redecorate my bedroom, moved the furniture and found patches and holes everywhere 😱😱 there were little moth chrysalis everywhere on the backs, joints and bottoms of my furniture, they looked like little rolled up bits of paper. As I began looking more closely I found them on the walls and even hanging from the ceiling 😱 they were so small I hadn't noticed them. The whole house was totally infested in every room bar the kitchen and bathroom. The retailer refused to accept any responsibility or liability. I had to rip out all the carpets treat the whole house and spent weeks pulling these little bits of paper looking things off everything(they are glued on and the hoover just didn't get them all) I replaced the flooring with man made fibres and thought that would be the end of it. 6 months later I found more of these rolled up bit of paper but the were blue/green in colour. Some of the moths had survived somehow I have no idea what they were eating and I never found out. Amazingly the just dwindled down to nothing after about 6 months and we never saw one again. I must have removed thousands of the little chrysalis things I dread to think how heavily infested the carpets were 😢

We've had some dark brown moths, the same size as a clothes moth but dark brown with a white patch near the head. Googling led me to believe they were Grain Moths. After several weeks we have tracked them down to a bag of bird seed - it was crawling with the larvae and the hatched moths Shock

Butterymuffin · 05/06/2019 19:46

I get these too Sad Is there a cat friendly spray you can use?

SwedishEdith · 05/06/2019 19:54

Aren't the blue/green ones flour or pantry moths? That's a whole other nightmare.

wowsaidtheowl · 05/06/2019 20:11

Moth bombs are amazing! We had a huge problem but moth free for a year. We also managed to kill a whole heap of spiders too.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 05/06/2019 20:13

We have carpet moths. The piano tuner spotted them and told us to spray the effected areas with neat white spirits. It’s a bit smelly but it seems to have done the trick.

moonrises · 05/06/2019 20:20

We moved into our house last year and have noticed quite a few but we do have windows open a lot. I have got some things to hang in the wardrobe and a sticky pad thing, but nothing caught since the weekend.

Goosethemoose · 05/06/2019 20:25

Really useful and well timed thread- we've got them, and they've eaten a big patch of carpet that's under a sort of box thing we use to store blankets. Maybe they're in the blankets. I daren't check, yet...

So what's the best solution?? White spirit? Moth bombs(!)??

ohmydaysagain · 05/06/2019 21:01

@SwedishEdith are they Confused I had no idea. I must have not realised I had any issue with flour Blush I found them in the bedrooms on furniture and under beds 😱

Loopytiles · 05/06/2019 21:03

Had this in London. Now only buy synthetic carpet!

BentNeckLady · 05/06/2019 21:07

We went on holiday last may and came back to a house full of carpet moths and tracked the, down to under the wardrobe in daughters bedroom where they had eaten the carpet! We’ve had the same this year with another carpet!

I wouldn’t want to use anything that had a 6 month lasting effect on insect life, even in the house that cannot be good can it.

GothsNotMoths · 06/06/2019 22:09

It's interesting what PPs are saying about carpets. I seem to have isolated the problem to the upstairs landing, although I'm too afraid to move the drawers myself - getting the professionals to do it. The carpet in the hall is over 20 years old, so it might not be synthetic. That could be the problem. Living room and bedroom are synthetic I'm sure, other rooms have vinyl flooring so it's not that.

On the plus side, we had recently decided to decorate the hall (after 20 years we are a bit bored of the decor Hmm) so if they have eaten it, I won't be too disappointed 😂

You need to break the reproductive cycle, you can buy sticky trap things on line, also Homebase sell a carpet moth powder (wasp powder has the same ingredient I think). But you have to keep on top of it for ages before you can be sure they've gone, Hoover everyday, and if you find a patch of carpet that they've eaten, dust under it and the skirting boards, into floorboards too. It's a pain in the arse but cheaper than paying a company. I think the website I've used is Moth Killer.

Loopytiles · 06/06/2019 22:27

Bet it’s that hall carpet - it’s gotta go!

Loopytiles · 06/06/2019 22:27

Lots of light is meant to help. Once you’ve got rid of the carpet!
