Resorts without sun bed hoggers?

stopitandtidyupp · 31/05/2019 10:22

AIBU to ask if you know of any Spanish or Greek AI hotels that you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to put a towel on a sun-bed?

One with a huge pool that isn't square. ( I don't like square onesBlush)

It doesn't necessarily have to be all inc.

Any budget really.

Does a place like this exist?

How on earth could anyone answer that?

Depends on how busy and who else is staying there

PARunnerGirl · 31/05/2019 10:30

Grand Mediterranean Atlantica in Ermones, Corfu

Atrium Prestige Thalasso Spa Resort in Lachania Beach, Rhodes

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 31/05/2019 10:31

Look for places that have a no reservation policy. We’re currently in Cyprus AI. Lovely hotel. No reservation policy. Can quite happily wander down at 11am and get two sun beds and brolly. Not plastic ones either full on mattress bed. It’s bliss. Oceanis something in Greece also has this policy. Sorry I can’t remember. full name. I know it’s not Greece or Spain but the Adriatic beach hotel in Croatia also great for sunbed situation.

It drives me nuts having to stress about a sun bed so I insist on only going to places that done have that problem. Think you might struggle in Spain.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 31/05/2019 10:32

It's not about the resort, unless you're looking for one that doesn't allow sunbed hogging, but it happens even at those. It's about who else is there.

PARunnerGirl · 31/05/2019 10:32

And if it’s any budget, then get your own pool! That’s what I do at the Rhodes one above (not the Corfu one because most are in the shade).

modgepodge · 31/05/2019 10:51

Most hotels have a ‘no reservations’ policy Hmm in fact I’ve never stayed in one where it’s permitted. Whether or not it’s enforced is a different matter!!

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 31/05/2019 11:02

@PARunnerGirl I'll be staying in one of those next week! So funny to see it mentioned.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/05/2019 11:19

It depends hugely on when you go. We don't normally holiday in the school holidays as we don't have to, but once we were in Tenerife and our holiday must have partially overlapped with the Easter holidays because one day there was suddenly about five times more people around the pool and towels on all the empty pool. Luckily we were going home the next day.

LittleRen · 31/05/2019 11:19

We are going to princess Andriana in Rhodes for the second time. The room has a massive sharing pool shared with maybe 10 other rooms - the terrace has the pool next to it so your balcony/terrace is your sunbathing spot, so you have no sunbed hoggers. Only downside is there is no poolside bar, you have to go to the main pool but they do fill up your minibar!

There is also mitsis rodos village with private pool rooms. They are more expensive but not hugely so.

I think without doing this or picking a resort with a lot of pools you will always get sunbed hoggers. I go on trip advisor and search for sunbeds within reviews and you can normally get the gist of if the hotel polices it and if you have to be up at 6am.

LittleRen · 31/05/2019 11:20

There are tons of Greek resorts with shared/private pools, as mentioned above!

stopitandtidyupp · 31/05/2019 11:26

Thanks all.

Will have a look at some of the suggestions.

Good idea about searching Trip Advisor.

@AnAC12UCOinanOCG Ooooh lucky you! Enjoy Smile I think I might go back to one of them this summer.

Knowivedonewrong · 31/05/2019 11:30

Alua Soul Alcudia Bay Majorca. AI Adults only. Plenty of sunbeds in June last year.
Sunrise Beach Protaras Cyprus, not AI, but have sunbeds allocated to your room.

Mascarponeandwine · 31/05/2019 11:31

6am is good going! We went to the canaries a few years ago, and I set the alarm for 3.30am so I could stumble out with the towels. Was only about 30 feet from the apartment, took a minute or so, and I’d say hello to at least 3 people doing the same!

TruffleShuffles · 31/05/2019 11:34

I’ve never been to a resort that doesn’t have a no reservation of sun beds rule. I’ve also never been to a resort that enforces this rule. I think it all depends on the guests at the time to be honest, if one does it and gets away with it everyone will do it so I don’t know how anyone can really answer the question.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/05/2019 11:35

Towels on the sunbeds at 3.30 am. That's insane. Seriously? Doesn't that make you part of the problem?

Marinkazurie · 31/05/2019 11:38

Doesn't that make you part of the problem?

What is the issue? If there are not enough sun loungers to go around then some people are going to be going without - they don't want to be the ones going without so they get up early to claim one, you take the risk. The only way I think it's unreasonable to get up early to claim a space is if you are going out so you won't even be there.

fecketyfeck21 · 31/05/2019 11:45

i will throw a 'reserved towel' on the floor at 8am in the morning and move the lounger to actually lay on as opposed to reserve, then when i leave it i don't expect to reserve it for two or three hours whilst i do something else.
unless you own it it's not yours to reserve, you are paying for potential use but so is everyone else doesn't mean you have automatic rights to one

PutyourtoponTrevor · 31/05/2019 11:46

Saving a sunbed at 3.30am? Absolutely pathetic, as are any sunbed hoggers

TapasForTwo · 31/05/2019 11:50

We stayed here last year. The pool is rectangular though. Buffet food, but really good quality.

And this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. Plenty of sunbeds, and fantastic food.

MT2017 · 31/05/2019 11:54

Setting the alarm for 3.3am on holiday - for whatever reason - would utterly negate the calm feeling I go on holiday for!!

FuriousVexation · 31/05/2019 12:05

I always used to use hotels when I went on holiday, then one year someone convinced me to try a private villa.

Private pool
Don't have to talk to anyone except the people you're going with
Usually have a washer/dryer - means you can take less luggage
Usually have a TV and DVD and/or games console so can stay in during the evenings with a bottle of wine instead of sitting in the hotel bar or a pub spending money
Cooking facilities - very handy if you have any dietary restrictions, plus as above you can please yourself

I have stayed in villas in Sidari, Corfu, and Latchi, Polis and Argaka in Cyprus. Really recommend the latter, there are loads of lovely walks nearby and architectural sites and plenty of lovely non-touristy restaurants (but all the staff speak English) to choose from.

Disclaimer: none of the above matters if you specifically want kids club! In that case I can't help as my DS always refused to go! But lots of villas have games consoles, things like table tennis, and of course the pool. And a lot are near things like water parks and go kart places.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 31/05/2019 12:10

Go to a villa with a private pool, you never get that problem there. It's so much nicer than being in a hotel anyway.

HotChocolateLover · 31/05/2019 12:10

Just be shameless and move people’s towels. I always do this if I come down and there’s nowhere to sit. I’m not standing around so that a beach towel can recline in the sun getting a tan until its owner decides to come down.
