Two women go on the run getting themselves into deeper and deeper shit until they finally commit suicide.

I find it really depressing. So what am I missing?

MoominMantra · 31/05/2019 00:54

But it just seems so depressing. I obviously missed the important bits!

Well, yes life can be depressing sometimes. It's not always a musical. Ever heard of catharsis? Smile

Fatasfooook · 31/05/2019 00:56

It’s a story of two women who due to men being dicks end up dead

managedmis · 31/05/2019 00:57

Er, Brad Pitt in it? Bit skinny but helllloooo

managedmis · 31/05/2019 00:58

Your should see my other gun

Eh, it's one of the best films of all time (don't get me wrong it's not the absolute best, but it isn't far off the top tier of films)

It's a film everyone knows/heard of even if they haven't seen it.

Powerful and Moving story about two women, who basically had their lives ruined by a dick who thought he could have his way and take what he wants by force, and "little housewife" who had her life controlled by her dick of a husband and you finally see her have a bit of freedom and her whole personality change when away from him/when it counts (going from timid, compliant and fearful to taking control/becoming strong - eg robbing a store to obtain funds/holding a cop up to free her friend and evade capture).

Ok I get invested a bit too much in films,,, but still it's a great film and also helps that Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are fabulous actresses.

e1y1 · 31/05/2019 02:00

I Thought it had - just been reading up, it's one of the films that has been added to the National Film Registry Archives for preservation for future generations due to it being either "culturally, aesthetically or historically significant"

here

Yanbu op

Sadly we are very much in the minority.

And I never thought Brad was all that even in his younger days - dreadful actor too!

Butchyrestingface · 31/05/2019 06:54

”I can’t go back. Something has crossed over in me. I just couldn’t live.”

Amazing movie. Wonderful soundtrack. Fantastic actresses. 😍

NameChangeNugget · 31/05/2019 06:56

YANBU. It’s over rated and shit

SinjunRivers · 31/05/2019 06:58

I've only seen it once years ago, late teens. I didn't really like it. But to be fair I may not have really understood it at the time.
Not a fan of Brad Pitt either.

SquishySquirmy · 31/05/2019 06:59

The bit when they blew up the truck was a great scene.

Pointless2 · 31/05/2019 07:01

I think it’s a good film, but can’t bear to watch it again because of the awful ending Sad. I want to get inside the film and help them sort it out so that they don’t die.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 31/05/2019 07:03

It's about the bigger perspective. At it's release we had seen nothing really like it. Two great female leads, in a movie solely about their experiences, from their perspective, given a large scale mainstream release, that wasn't just tits and ass. It was ground breaking. And it's well acted, well scripted, well made.

That's why.

MaudebeGonne · 31/05/2019 07:07

I think it is very powerful. There aren't many films where women are the anti-hero, where their "prize" isn't getting the man, but realising the life they have been sold as a dream is a soul destroying trap, and gaining their freedom from that. There aren't many films that tell the story of blue collar or working class women. There aren't many films where women's sexuality isn't the most important thing about them. It was and remains completely original.

It is depressing, but it is provocative and beautifully shot and has an amazing soundtrack. Lots of great films have dark content. But this is one of the only ones where women aren't there as light relief, or as chirpy little fixers for some tortured man. They are the agents of their own story.

It is a film I love, that I have watched many times and will continue to watch. I feel irrationally upset that not everyone appreciates it Blush

Halimeda · 31/05/2019 07:08

A feminist thriller with astonishing lead performances, reinvented the road buddy movie, shows the change of two unfulfilled, ordinary women into social brigands, is gorgeously filmed?

Mominatrix · 31/05/2019 07:09

I saw it when it came out and hated it except for the Brad Pitt bits. From the start, the Geena Davis character irritated me (I have a low tolerance for stupidity) and it just went down hill from there.

I don't see it as Girl Power and found the ending completely futile. Not my cup of tea.

lotusbell · 31/05/2019 07:10

It's a great film, I studied it at A Level Media Studies over 20 years ago so had to watch it several times Grin

Lllot5 · 31/05/2019 07:14

I’m with you op I don’t get it either. Only watched it once perhaps I’ve missed something but we’re all different and it’s not for me.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 31/05/2019 07:16

It's up there with steel magnolias for me.

JellySlice · 31/05/2019 07:16

realising the life they have been sold as a dream is a soul destroying trap, and gaining their freedom from that.

But do they really gain their freedom from it? Isn't the message that women cannot truly escape?

ScreamingValenta · 31/05/2019 07:25

I found it boring. YANBU.

Landfilly · 31/05/2019 07:29

This.

At the time, there was nothing like it.
