To worry that DH's breath smells of oranges?

Citrusquery · 30/05/2019 21:28

I've noticed in the last six months DH's breath has a distinctive smell like he's been eating oranges when he hasn't. It's not a bad breath type smell at all but I do think it's unusual.

I can't find out what it could be, but I am sure my sense of smell is heightened now I'm breastfeeding so perhaps it's normal and I'm only just noticing.

If it's odd, what do I do, send him to the dr to say his wife is smelling things?!

Lol.

Seriously though ltb. I mean oranges? That's outrageous, what's wrong with good old dog shit? Husbands these days!

Changingweather · 30/05/2019 21:31

Isn't dehydration a fruity smell? The ketones, or something like that... I'm no scientist, so may be talking utter nonsense.

Haworthia · 30/05/2019 21:32

Ketones apparently smell like pear drops.

HolyMolyMeatballs · 30/05/2019 21:32

I’ve heard people with diabetes can have a strange breath smell (not sure if it’s oranges though)

kaldefotter · 30/05/2019 21:33

Could it be a pear drop smell, OP?

coffeeandpyjamas · 30/05/2019 21:37

Has he lost any weight recently? Is he always thirsty?
Sweet smelling breath can be a sign on type 1 diabetes which can be extremely serious if not managed effectively.
Hope he is okay. Maybe head to the GP to make sure?

Citrusquery · 30/05/2019 21:45

I had read that about diabetes, but wouldn't there be other signs? He should probably drink more, but I don't think he is dangerously dehydrated. He hasn't lost weight recently, I suppose our diet is a bit healthier nowadays but still plenty of it and he's not really thirsty or excessively tired

I am worried about it really but I don't think he'd go to the dr just to tell them I think he smells like oranges!

It could be ketones you are smelling, so I would actually get him to go and get checked out.

I think Lloyds pharmacy do a diabetes check if that would be a better first step?

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 30/05/2019 21:48

Seriously please get him checked out asap. It could be diabetes which can be fatal if untreated. Go tomorrow.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/05/2019 21:49

I thought it was a pear drops smell for diabetes, but maybe get him checked out

SteveArnott · 30/05/2019 21:57

One person's pear drops are another's oranges! Best to get checked out!

Citrusquery · 30/05/2019 21:58

Will book him in to Lloyds. It will take longer for our GP and with no other symptoms I don't think they'll book for same day (also I will have to convince him to go)

OP posts:
PuddingPie1 · 30/05/2019 21:59

Is it just his breath that smells of oranges or are 'you' smelling oranges? If that makes sense? It could be your disorder. It is a thing and could relate to your own health condition?!!

Citrusquery · 30/05/2019 22:01

I did wonder that! But it's only his breath

I did an experimental sniff and can't detect any oranges now 😂

A relative of mine, mid twenties had no symptoms and was not overweight , at a routine eye test, the optician spotted bleeding in the back of his eyes.It turned out he had Type 1 diabetes.

Citrusquery · 30/05/2019 22:03

Thank you all. I'll speak to him tomorrow although he thinks I'm nuts

OP posts:
kaitlinktm · 30/05/2019 22:05

Make your mind up OP - nuts or oranges? Wink

TheInvestigator · 30/05/2019 22:07

bitchfromhell, I don't think OP was complaining about the smell of his breath. She's concerned it could indicate a health issue he might have. But the clearly went over your head.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 30/05/2019 22:10

OP you have potentially saved his life. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) - one of the symptoms can be sweet, fruit-like breath. GP immediately!

JohnsPrincess · 30/05/2019 22:11

investigator not really living up to your name are you? We could all see bitch’s sarcasm from here

Aridane · 30/05/2019 22:13

yes, urgent medical help - for your olfactory hallucinations Grin

TheInvestigator · 30/05/2019 22:17

@JohnsPrincess

Sarcasm and "lol" are not appropriate responses to what is a genuine worry about someone's health. So either bitchfromhell thought OP was simply moaning about a smell, or she was joking and being sarcastic about what could be serious health issues. Neither of those responses are all that great.

TatianaLarina · 30/05/2019 22:17

Without weight loss, thirst, excessive peeing, nausea or pain - ketoacidosis is not very likely.

Perhaps he’s just been drinking orange juice..

MyToothPain · 30/05/2019 22:28

V good advice from others to take this seriously, but... has he changed his diet at all lately?

My OH used to have breath that was awful to me. I can’t recall what it smelled of, but it was odd. And then he stopped eating bananas and - tadah! Fresh breath!

woodcutbirds · 30/05/2019 22:29

If it's not illness, is he drinking herbal teas? Some of them smell quite orangey - the rosehip ones and any with zest in.
