To worry that DH's breath smells of oranges?

I've noticed in the last six months DH's breath has a distinctive smell like he's been eating oranges when he hasn't. It's not a bad breath type smell at all but I do think it's unusual.

I can't find out what it could be, but I am sure my sense of smell is heightened now I'm breastfeeding so perhaps it's normal and I'm only just noticing.

If it's odd, what do I do, send him to the dr to say his wife is smelling things?!

If it's rather like oversweet, rotten fruit, the only other thing I can think of is alcoholism. But I'd think you'd notice that one.

Definitely persuade him to go to the doctor and tell them 'DW says I give off a sweet/fruity/smell in the morning before I get up'. They should instantly do tests to eliminate diabetes - fasting blood sugar, urine tests, that sort of thing, so tell him not to eat or drink anything (not even tea or coffee) before going just so they can test straight away if they've got a space.

Hopefully he's just got a secret 5 Tangerines a day habit, but definitely get him to take it seriously.

@TheInvestigator bitch is, I believe, referencing another famous MN thread featuring dog shit breath. Grin

Ex had a drink and drug problem and sometimes his breath smelt slightly fruity. His sweat also used to smell too. It smelt of chemicals most of the time.

I had other people smelling it too so I knew it wasn't phantom smells.

Weird odours can be symptoms of infections, tumours etc so I would get it checked out. A friend had a skin infection that smelt sweet - it was unsightly but relatively harmless.

This message isn’t to be alarmist but I would definitely look at advising him to get checked and noting any other symptoms. My husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and one of his symptoms was the change in the smell of his breath. I cannot remember what it looked like but it smelt very different. He was also involved in research collecting his breath as use for potential diagnostic tool!
So whilst it’s highly unlikely to be similar to this, there is a variety of issues it could relate to and so always worth getting these things checked out.
