To ask the etiquette for potty in public place?

I’ve read some posts on here really against using a potty in a public place so need some advice. DS is 2 and we have just started potty training. I need to go to the supermarket tomorrow. When he needs to go he needs to go right now.

I have a travel potty and usually would be one saying whipping it out in the supermarket is gross- but it’s going to be that or a puddle on the shop floor which is surely worse?

So... potty in public- when/where is an absolute no no and where is it ok to try and use discreetly?

After watching a lady whip out a travel potty in the middle of story time at the library ( toilet was about 25yrds away) i swore I’d never embarrass my kids like that! If your son can’t wait untill you find a toilet or get back to the car so they can pee in peace in the boot then he needs pull ups for going out.

I think if you wouldn't use a toilet in the middle of a supermarket where people can see you then you shouldn't expect your child to do so. Why do you think your child deserves less dignity and privacy than you?

WindsweptEgret · 31/05/2019 16:06

Take the child to the toilet before you leave the house or upon arrival at the supermarket if there's one there. Then they shouldn't need to go again. I don't understand this waiting until they are desperate for the loo before taking them, learning using the toilet when one is available or at transition times is an essential part of toilet training.

What would you be planning to do with the contents of the potty if he did use it in the middle of the store?

NauseousMum · 31/05/2019 16:23

Not a store, shop or restaurant- ew. In the park and woods, ive used the potty. It's a long walk back to any toilets there. I use myself a she-wee in the woods but potty for the toddler. The park is a mad dash i barely make. PITA the lack of public toilets.

On a potty training note, does anyone know a good loo training seat for a square toilet. So far I've had zero luck.

@NauseousMum

From the answered questions:
Question: Hi i have a square toilet seat and am struggling to find a training seat will this fit a square toilet seat
Answer: Yes! I have a rectangle toilet, the hole of my toilet is 20cm x 27cm and it fits over this quite comfortably, the prongs push against the hole no matter what shape so it doesn't budge on it at all, my daughter can easily lift it on and off herself and the step makes it easy for her.

It also has customer images in the reviews.

NauseousMum · 31/05/2019 17:16

Thank you @HistoryWistery! I've been using the amazon app and google but every time i thought i found one labelled for a square toilet, the reviews disagreed. Much appreciated as my dc want to use the toilet.

Use the toilet. Mir they can’t hold it long enough to get to a supermarket toilet they aren’t ready for toilet training. I’ve got 3 children, one severely autistic and I’ve never even owned a potty.

AbbyHammond · 31/05/2019 17:50

Oh god no!

Potty train at home.

Once child can hold on for a bit you make them do a wee before you leave and when you arrive anywhere.

Emergency wees behind trees/gutter by car is acceptable in a pinch.

Otherwise - go to the toilet!
