AIBU to bloody hate cyclists

I have just trailed three cyclists during the course of the day. Honest to God, why don't they just pull over and let people pass?

I don't mind cyclists as at least they are reasonably easy to overtake - now tractors and horse and carriage! They need to pull over an let people pass!

We were (thankfully) on the other side of the road yesterday and our traffic slowed a bit and we passed a horse and carriage - behind it was a mile of traffic just stuck. There would be next to no chance to overtake as our side of the road was so busy. I would hate to be in their position.

nakedscientist · 31/05/2019 23:21

Yes, you are.

twojackrusselsandamoggie · 31/05/2019 23:25

What the fuck is that video with the comment "the correct course of action" posted by @Stroopwaffel99 ??? I'm sure there are posters on here who can warrant a visit from the police with their psychopathic beliefs around what cyclists "deserve" Angry

broken1982 · 31/05/2019 23:57

Ahh someone else who feels the same towards cyclists as myself! Roads should be for motor vehicles. I find it's bloody cyclists that cause a lot of the accidents on our roads by being in motorists bloody way! Arghhhhh

pinkboa · 01/06/2019 00:09

I'm not annoyed at cyclists... I am annoyed with this countries lack of infrastructure for cyclists.

They keep yapping on about car emissions blah blah but don't seem to think that if they provide safe means to ride a bicycle more people might actually do it!

Some of the roads I drive on have unnecessarily wide medians.. medians which could easily fit a cycling lane. So many roads with no sidewalk/footpath seem to just have loads of verges with dead grass that councils have to cut imagine if it was paved with proper cycle paths... I'd probably be more inclined to do it.

I miss cycling... absolutely loved it in Australia... wouldn't change it here.

Anyways YANBU...

I did a slight scoff at the 'cycling being more enviromentally friendly' argument the other day. One bounced onto the train vestibule and straight towards me. Pinned me underneath his bike, I side-eyed him. He fumbled around trying to prop his bike up around me (rather than straight up ask if I minded moving seats) and after an excrutiating amount of minutes asked if I could move so he could secure his bike. Six seats on a busy he train he needed to seat his precious bike and deriere on a 10 mile train route!

MiniMum97 · 01/06/2019 00:52

Oh how fucking boring and depressing. Another we hate cyclists thread!! Yawn yawn.

Btw yabvvvvvvvvvvu

echt · 01/06/2019 04:26

You can try all the obscure arguments you like, but the fact is that unnecessarily cycling two abreast on a busy road causes motorists to attempt dangerous overtaking manouvres. This is likely why the Highway Code advises against it

Where does it say not to cycle two abreast in the HC? I've looked and can't find it.

No-one is causing the car drivers to do anything. Can't see why it's dangerous as the two abreast cyclists take up no more room than a car. More examples might help.

ivykaty44 · 01/06/2019 06:01

Cars don’t do anything on their own - it’s drivers that operate cars. Interesting how people blame the car rather than the motorist

ivykaty44 · 01/06/2019 06:10

no way would I want to chance being sucked in, which happens when they overtake

No it doesn't because of the mandatory guard rails which have been in place for years.

Mandatory guard rails don’t stop the airflow changing around the lorry, they just prevent something going under You really don’t understand physics do you,

recrudescence · 01/06/2019 06:44

'I hate' threads with swear words are only allowed about cyclists. I can't think of any other group it would be tolerated for.

Agreed - I have made this point directly to Mumsnet. Mumsnet have not replied.

HouseName · 01/06/2019 07:06

They take up no more room than a car but don't go at the same speed as a car, therefore impacting the flow of traffic. 30 cyclists on country roads round here will cause a massive tailback.

I haven't said anything about hating cyclists, I gave an example in support of another person who said they had been held up for 11 miles and who was immediately told that was impossible and it was somehow her fault. I was told the same and called a twat. I have no issue with people cycling to work, I started the bloody cycle to work scheme in my organisation. I do have an issue with the behaviour of some cyclists who ride through the village in massive groups every weekend, shouting and throwing litter, and no they are not calling warnings to each other, they are chatting but at shouting volume, and also with situations like the example I gave that ended up with being surrounded and intimidated even though I had absolutely done nothing wrong. The video up thread says share the road. That applies both ways and when cycling in a huge group there should be some consideration to facilitating the flow of traffic unless it's a specific event and there is signage to warn motorists.

swingofthings · 01/06/2019 07:20

Well this is mumsnet for a reason!
Threads about cyclists: they are a nuisance, making my journey unpleasant, I don't care they have a right to be on the road, they are infuriating me so shouldn't be there, end of.

Thread about children on planes: How dare that man moaning about my kid kicking his seat and screaming in his ears. He as the same right to be there, even if we didn't have to pay for a seat. If he doesn't like toddlers on plane, he should pay to fly first class!

Why isn't tbere a dadsnet forum? Would love to venture there sometimes?

twojackrusselsandamoggie · 01/06/2019 07:24

@Stroopwaffel99 oh I'm sorry, was me being horrified at you saying that "the correct course of action" was a van driver purposefully driving into a cyclist and throwing him off his bike, a bit of an overreaction? Should I have just laughed heartily at your "joke"? I don't usually laugh at videos where one person may realistically have been killed. Does that make me weird?

MinnieMountain · 01/06/2019 07:26

Broken1982 that's so funny. The last accident I witnessed was caused by a van driver impatiently overtaking DH and me on a 90 degree corner.

twojackrusselsandamoggie · 01/06/2019 07:29

@broken1982 sorry hun but roads aren't just for motorists. And if you look at the stats, accidents tend to be caused by motorists, not cyclists. The problem is people with the same views as you, hence this frankly horrifying thread "but the bikes are in my way, they're holding me up, I'm more important than them so they need to get out of my way".

Fucking ridiculous.

MinnieMountain · 01/06/2019 07:30

Clearly we were cycling. Also had DS on a bike seat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/06/2019 08:06

It's a certain type of cyclist.

We have a huge park nearby with a 20 mph perimeter road, plus a narrow perimeter woodland path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Until they very belatedly reduced the path limit to 5 mph I really used to hate the Lycra clad cyclists who'd steam along that path at top speed, expecting everyone else - old people, little kids, dogs who might be old and deaf, to get out of their way. Esp. when there was a perfectly good road nearby.
One dog walker I knew slightly was yelled and sworn at by one such top speed cyclist on that path, who fell off after swerving to avoid his dog.
The bloke gave him a good punch, I'm glad to say. Serve the selfish, arrogant sod right. There were clear signs to say it was a path shared with pedestrians, not to mention a perfectly good road along precisely the same route.,

This sounds more like you'd cause an a cure t because of the presence of a cyclist, if they're in your way it doesn't men they're in the wrong!

twojackrusselsandamoggie · 01/06/2019 08:46

@Stroopwaffel99 are you fucking serious? The video showed a 3000kg moving lump of metal drive purposely into a 70kg unprotected cyclist and throw him off, and that's funny? So no one died, are you saying that the cyclist being killed in that situation is just a ridiculous notion? Do you actually see the cyclist flying through the air?

WiltedDaffs · 01/06/2019 09:13

Oh nobody died, just knocked off a bike, just injured, totally ok then. Hmm

Sitting on that bike is a human being who has just been driven into, he would not have just fell off his bike and got up unharmed. I got knocked off my bike by someone in a stationary car opening a door without looking. Severe bruising, unable to walk properly for weeks, almost four months on and my leg is not back to normal. That was me, moving at low speed, being hit by an also slow moving object. Basic physics tells you forces are increased with increased mass and speed. That guy will have come off worse than me. A human being always comes off worse in a collision with a metal object.
