I have just trailed three cyclists during the course of the day. Honest to God, why don't they just pull over and let people pass?

For those that think there should be a road tax - perhaps everyone on wheels using the road should pay a tax - to cover the cost of all the injuries

£ 36 billion it costs the economy in RTA
& 12% of crashes drivers are drunk 😵 doesn’t give the % on there phones..

Your subsequent comments aren't any better tbh stroop.

Why is it that drivers are never castigated for using the road when they have a right to do so?

Most cyclists are considerate and do try to facilitate the flow of traffic. Your objection seems to be more that they don't instantly get out of your way when you want to pass.

How do you deal with horse riders?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/05/2019 22:30

I am fine with the idea that we should all help each other out. (I often pull over to allow cars to pass me easily.)

I am not fine with people being "flippant" as you put it, with other people's lives and physical health.

It is not funny in the least.

And you know what? I am absolutely sick to death of motorists hooting at each other aggressively when I am a pedestrian on the pavement running alongside. It is tremendously antisocial and I have seen how much it startles fellow pedestrians. I can only congratulate cyclists who encounter you on the road for managing to stay balanced.

WhatAShewOff · 31/05/2019 22:31

YABVU. As are those who make the tired “road tax” argument. Bikes don’t damage the road, pollute or kill people.

The fact is that one a normal road (one lane in either direction), a lorry cannot safely pass a bike without going onto the opposite side. You therefore need a gap to safely overtake, and the bike's position does not change this unless you are trying to squeeze past close to them and force them right up to the verge. Blasting the horn to intimidate them into allowing you to squeeze past close to them just makes you a bully.

popsadaisy · 31/05/2019 22:34

Cyclist don't annoy me but tractors do!!! I understand they have to occasionally drive on main roads but what really annoys me is when they travel 10 miles down a dangerous B road (that is unsafe to overtake on) and don't pull over every now and again to let the trail of cars they have behind them go! Sorry to jump on your post but it's a similar annoyance!

HillRunner · 31/05/2019 22:35

On a normal road, even

ivykaty44 · 31/05/2019 22:39

Popsadaisy why should the tractor driver pull over just because you want to drive faster? Yes, the HC says they should if driving slowly - but many tractors bomb along at 30mph so hardly slow

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/05/2019 22:40

As in a head on collision from the rear?

As in whatever convoluted series of events that mean it is imperative that you hoot at them to get them to move into the gutter. As far as I can tell, you were talking about overtaking to start with.

LocksMyth · 31/05/2019 22:40

I had to deal with 2 lorries parked on- and blocking - a dual pedestrian /cycle path today. Neither driver gave a shit about forcing people into the road of oncoming traffic. More tolerance all round would be a good thing.

I wouldn’t want to be cycling on a dual carriage way - ended up on A46 crossing over a few times and the draft from HGV going passed is incredibly strong - no way would I want to chance being sucked in, which happens when they overtake

kidsmakesomuchwashing · 31/05/2019 22:41

I spoke to a cyclist the other day about why do they sometimes not cycle behind one another but side by side. He said that if cyclists cycle side by side it's usually because it's a blind road / bend and a motorist wouldn't be able to see round the corner, by cycling next to each other it forced the car to wait until the corner is clear and then they go back behind each other again.

jamievardy I'm not sure there is any point trying to engage with a poster who finds that video they posted funny.

My ancient laptop can't handle embedded videos. How bad is it?

ivykaty44 · 31/05/2019 22:50

Kidsmakingwashing
Cycling alongside each other means we can have a chat. As I posted earlier the driver beeped to let us know he was there ( near motorway bridge so lots of traffic noise) and we singled out as it was safe, driver passed and we moved over again

HillRunner · 31/05/2019 22:51

A cyclist is in the centre of the lane. Could be further left, but otherwise cycling normally.
A van behind is right on his rear wheel, leaving no space, and repeatedly tries to force its way past.
The cyclist loses his temper and knocks the van wing mirror off on one of these attempts (the van is that close).
The van then deliberately swerves into the cyclist, repeatedly ramming into them.

ivykaty44 · 31/05/2019 22:51

JV it’s a truck driver using his truck as a weapon

kidsmakesomuchwashing · 31/05/2019 22:53

Cyclists are being good to the planet and being good to the NHS by keeping healthy! Quit moaning!
Also Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) which many of you are wrongly calling "Road tax" is £0 for any vehicle which has zero emissions. Last time I checked bikes had zero emissions therefore not required to pay any VED just like a hybrid or electric car!!! A failed argument by most regarding this non-existent thing which everyone seems to refer to as "Road tax"!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 31/05/2019 22:56

Oh-kay... thank you HillRunner and Ivykaty. Yep, dis-engaging from this one at speed of light...

HillRunner · 31/05/2019 23:00

And regarding my earlier point, stroop has just reinforced what I said. Their vehicle is one lane wide, therefore whatever the cyclist does they will need to wait for a gap to overtake, as they will need to cross into the other lane. Unless the cyclist is literally cycling all the way over on the right hand side of the lane, a truck which is one lane wide will be able to safely pass when there is gap.
