To ask how much spending money you would take for a 3 day trip to London

Bearing in mind the hotel is paid for (Wembley area). We want to be a little frugal so no posh dining.

Only tourist thing we are inclined to do is Madam Tussauds. We are there for a concert (Fleetwood Mac), not to sight see (although we will do a little).

We go next month and I am STRESSED.

We took £300 for me and my husband - London eye was pre booked and everything else we had planned was free so it really just covered cost of dinners and travel , we bought a pack of croissants and some snacks from Tescos to keep us going throughout the day .

MyKingdomForACaramel · 29/05/2019 16:55

Ok so things that may surprise you...

Wembley is in zone 4 - so a trip into town will cost around £14 per adult. (An uber could possibly be cheaper if there’s a few of you!)
Food in central London is less expensive than you think if you book in advance and choose pre-theatre menus (two corses from say £15 for somewhere half decent).
A pint costs around £5-6, a glass of wine maybe £7-£9.

Herocomplex · 29/05/2019 16:56

Look at ‘Time Out’ guide to London, loads of suggestions for free things to do, and money off/offers in restaurants. Plan ahead and don’t eat near tourist areas.
I’ve got no rec for how much it will cost you.

SnakeRattleRoll · 29/05/2019 16:58

Madamme Tussauds is the worst tourist attraction in London. But that might be me. I wouldn't bother queuing up to see real celebs, let alone models of them! It's busy, massive queues and just generally not good value for money!

It depends on what you want to do. Science museum, transport museum and galleries are popular with us, London Eye was OK, I quite enjoyed Shreks Adventure 😂

NorthernRunner · 29/05/2019 16:58

Wembley is far out so travel to and from central won’t be the cheapest.
I suggest your download the Foursquare App for good tips on places to eat. Also the CityMapper App is a must because it will tell you what routes to take, how long they will take, and how much they will cost.

NorthernRunner · 29/05/2019 16:59

I would say £100 per day

MyKingdomForACaramel · 29/05/2019 17:00

Oh and don’t waste money on Taussards - there are so many good free things to go and do. Next month should be warm, so go and explore the big parks, or take a walk around. I would honestly suggest looking up some groupon deals for food - it’s orobably cheaper than trying to put together a picnic while you’re away from home.

Questionsmorequestions · 29/05/2019 17:06

You can get a bus from Wembley into Leicester Square area for £2. I’d avoid Tussauds, unless you have Tesco tickets. There are loads of free things to do depending on your interests. Have you been before? What do you enjoy?

Fromage · 29/05/2019 17:07

£40million.

Each.

Vilanelle · 29/05/2019 17:07

I have taken up one offer with Groupon.

Oh dear, I knew nothing about the zones!

Slightly more stressed now.

Science museum sounds fun!

Agree, I live near but not in London and I would never waste my money on it

Plus there are hundreds of much better completely free things to do and see Confused

Weather might be nice which is even better

In my own opinion and own tastes I would go to galleries and museums and avoid the entire Merlin owned rip offs! Also get food from Tesco and go to a nice park to eat lunch

stucknoue · 29/05/2019 17:11

Tickets are often cheaper online and look for deals. Museums are mostly free. There's plenty of options for cheaper and mid range dining. If weather is good sandwiches in the park is a good option. Zones 1-4 day travel isn't cheap, travel after 9.30am

PookieDo · 29/05/2019 17:11

I live near to zone 6 and I tap in and out with my debit card on when I go it is easier and cheaper but does add up for 3 days.

Will TFL site tell me details about buses?

We like food lol and animals, history. My DP has never been to London and I have only been once, many moons ago. The hotel we have booked does a full english each day which has been paid for too so we should be fine until afternoon.

I know we are not going to starve but I also don't want to be penny pinching too much.

I like the idea of sandwiches in the park. Which parks are nice?

No it won't. Use your contactless payment card for the tube or bus .An adult single fare will be £3.90 , or £2.80 if you're travelling off peak. Even if you then decide to make loads more journeys there's a daily cap of £10.10. Just make sure you use the same card every time to touch in and out. The cap is automatically calculated.

nancy75 · 29/05/2019 17:16

£14 Wembley to central London?? Only if you travel by unicorn, £2.80 on the tube if you use contactless

Lizsmum · 29/05/2019 17:17

PS Wembley Park to Baker Street takes about 16 minutes on the Metropolitan Line and 19 minutes on the Jubilee .... really NOT far out.

Heratnumber7 · 29/05/2019 17:17

£100 per day, but hope to not spend it all

cestlavielife · 29/05/2019 17:17

Go to.southbank and wander down from.Westminster to tate modern
Take a boat to.greenwich
All parks are nice... depends where you end up.

ZoeWashburne · 29/05/2019 17:17

Skip Toussauds- it’s awful. Go to the South Kensington museums- all free! Science Museum, Natural History, and V&A are al fantastic. You can then walk up to Hyde Park and picnic by the serpentine. Low cost and fabulous day out.

nancy75 · 29/05/2019 17:18

If your husband has never been to London don’t waste time at Madam Tussaud’s it’s the worst thing here.

Lizsmum · 29/05/2019 17:18

Don't go on a bus from Wembley, it will take forever. Tube is your friend.

Vilanelle · 29/05/2019 17:18

Thanks for the clarification with tube prices, I saw £2.80 on TFL site earlier!

I do like the sound of traveling by unicorn

What sort of food do you like? There’s plenty of great affordable food in London if you know where to look.

Definitely use contactless to use public transport (either debit card or Apple Pay) - it’s the cheapest way as there’s a daily limit and you can use it on buses too.
The TFL journey planner is great.
