To ask how much spending money you would take for a 3 day trip to London

Bearing in mind the hotel is paid for (Wembley area). We want to be a little frugal so no posh dining.

Only tourist thing we are inclined to do is Madam Tussauds. We are there for a concert (Fleetwood Mac), not to sight see (although we will do a little).

We go next month and I am STRESSED.

If you are here in a weekend there are food markets everywhere - good food at reasonably cheap prices. London Bridge to Wembley Park on jubilee line - at London Bridge you can walk to borough market, Tower of London, HMS Belfast or go the other way to Tate modern, the globe, London eye & the southbank. You can walk over one of the bridges to Houses of Parliament or St. Paul’s

Loopytiles · 29/05/2019 17:22

If he’s never done the sights there is loads of good free stuff to see and do. River boat might be fun, info on TfL.

If weather good St James’ Park is nice for a picnic, and south bank. Plan a pitstop to buy the food somewhere cheapish.

SnakeRattleRoll · 29/05/2019 17:23

Green Park is lovely, and I love Hyde Park, you can go to Olympic Park and that's lovely too.

Vilanelle · 29/05/2019 17:25

I fancy Camden lock!

As for food, I love all food, DP fussier but loves chinese and japanese.

When you say there is a limit on contactless, does that mean I can travel as much as I like but wont be charged more than a tenner??

If London is completely unfamiliar to you both I’d skip the majority of expensive indoor tourist things and concentrate on walking around specific pre-chosen areas.

South Kensington - Kensington - Sloane Street - Kings Road.

The Inns of Court from Gray’s Inn - Chancery Lane - Lincoln’s Inn, Middle Temple, Inner Temple - Embankment.

Barbican tube station, through the Barbican estate - Lakeside (cafes or eat your sandwiches) - then look around an exhibition or get tickets for a performance inside the Barbican.

Chelsea Physic Garden is rather appealing, though not free.

SnakeRattleRoll · 29/05/2019 17:26

China Town near Leicester Square has lots of good choices, seek out bubble waffles too 😍

nancy75 · 29/05/2019 17:27

You could eat yourself silly in Camden - loads of food stalls
The limit for contactless is £12 a day now I think? Not too sure but yes you can get in every bus & tube in London if you want & it won’t charge more than the daily limit (within a day)

InTheNorth · 29/05/2019 17:28

Tussauds = complete rip off tourist trip, avoid at all costs.
Museums are all free and great - usual South Ken suspects or museum of London near Barbican is a bit different, walk along South Bank, see if you can get a £5 ticket for the Globe theatre.
Head into the parks and have a look around, walk up Brick Lane and have a salt beef bagel or a curry, see if you can book to go up the walkie talkie (Skygarden) - free and nearly as tall as the Shard.
Don't get a bus into town unless you really like spending lots of time on buses. The tube is great; use contactless cards to tap in at the gates for each journey - there's a daily limit of around £10 per person for which you can use as many tubes, buses and some overground trains as you want in that day.

Vilanelle · 29/05/2019 17:29

That is amazing! Yeah I love the foodie stalls and seems reasonable - price wise. Plus lots of shops.

Maybe we will give madam tussauds a miss then. I have been on a river boat once, that was nice and think my DP would like that too!

Go to Hampton Court Palace on a river boat if possible. Amazing day out. Take a picnic and eat in the grounds of the palace

nancy75 · 29/05/2019 17:31

Look for deals online for the river boats, you can usually get 241

Pipandmum · 29/05/2019 17:31

If you’re not there to site see then I’d just walk around and soak in the atmosphere. I love walking down King’s Road. You could go to lunch in lots of reasonably priced places there. Go to the V&A, that’s my favourite. I always find Natural History Museum disappointing. Science museum is good. If weather nice a stroll around the Serpentine. St James, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens - spoilt for choice! Wander around Covent Garden. And minimal cash use cards. And wow Fleetwood Mac! Saw them in the 80s!

nancy75 · 29/05/2019 17:32

What days are you coming & where is the concert in those days? We could probs my do you a plan for each day to make the most of it
Eg fri, sat & sun - concert on sat? What time do you arrive & leave?

thisisthetime · 29/05/2019 17:39

I would budget £100 per day and make sure you don’t eat out too much/anywhere expensive.

coffeeaddiction · 29/05/2019 17:39

Our favourite museums are the natural history museum and the imperial war museum 😊

Throckmorton · 29/05/2019 17:40

Get the citymapper app - it shows you all the public transport options for wherever you are.

Pppppppp1234 · 29/05/2019 17:40

There’s an app called Tube Map you can download and put your destination in and from which station, it gives you the cost and also the route to take.

We walked A LOT when we went to London, everywhere we could within in reason (with a 4 year old in tow). We stayed in south bank and walked into central London (45 mins) walked to Buckingham Tower of London etc... walked to the shops. Only place we didn’t walk to was the Excel.

We took £150 for three days including the 4 year old and we stayed within it, this was toys for him from hamleys too.

It can be done on the cheap!

Aethelthryth · 29/05/2019 17:48

Tussauds is ghastly. Take the tube from Wembley into town.

Most of the museums and galleries are free

herecomestherainagain2 · 29/05/2019 17:50

There are companies that do speedboat rides down the Thames - they are good fun.

palahvah · 29/05/2019 17:52

I recommend downloading the citymapper app if you haven't already: I live in London and it's what I use to plan my journeys.
If you use your contactless card for travel then it will work out the right price for you and cap your daily spend. Remember you need to tap in and out on the tube BUT only when you get onto the bus, not when you get off it.

OpenTable is good for finding places near you to eat and the timeout London site has cheap eats in all areas.

So much of the city can be covered on foot. If you're up for walking you can make your way along the river from Tate Britain to Tower Bridge with a whole load of sights along the way.

Also from the museums at South Kensington through Hyde Park, Green Park, St James park and Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square/Westminster Abbey down Whitehall to Trafalgar Square and along to Covent Garden.

Loads of options - don't worry about trying to so everything, just pick a couple you'd really like to do and enjoy.

beelover · 29/05/2019 17:56

The Sky Garden at the top of the Walkie Talkie gives fantastic views right across London. Its free but you have to pre book a slot for your visit, you can do it online Definitely worth a visit.

ComeAndDance · 29/05/2019 17:56

Use the app Citymapper. This will tell you how to get from A to B as well as prices (by underground, bus or Uber....).

Food. You can make it very cheap by using supermarket in central London and buying a salad/sandwich/drink.
Agree about booking ahead for the evening meal.
Plenty of free attractions in London (science museum, natural history museum, British museum all come to mind).
Buses are great and cheap to do a tour of London (same than the city hop on and off tours. Just create your own)

ChocChocButtons · 29/05/2019 18:01

Wembley outlets good for food and a few outlet shops.

You can get to kings x/Baker Street ext really quick from Wembley.

Mitzimaybe · 29/05/2019 18:01

The number 11 bus goes past most of the major sights and is far cheaper than one of the tourist sightseeing buses.

Likethebattle · 29/05/2019 18:05

I’d also say download cirymapper. It was a godsend for me and DH. It tells you what line, what train, what time etc for each journey...we were using the tube after a few hours as if it was easy.
