That's not hand, foot and mouth, that's an infection either under the nail or at the end of it. Mention it to your GP later, in the meantime, I'd stick a plaster over it so that if it bursts, it doesn't go everywhere!

Whatsername7 · 29/05/2019 09:11

I would say infected finger. Dd1 has tvis on her toe at a few days old. I carefully bathed it, popped it and drained the puss then kept it clean. It cleared up. The dr will probably drain it for you.

eebagum · 29/05/2019 09:13

Could you put some magnesium sulphate (epsom salt) on it and cover it with a plaster? If there's anything in there such as a splinter it should draw it out

ComeAndDance · 29/05/2019 09:15

If he is still a happy baby, doesn’t have any fever at all, is eating, peeing and pooping well, then I dint think waiting until 3.00pm is an issue at all.
Some times, stepping back a bit and looking at the big picture helps to see if there is something wrong going on or not.

MillicentMartha · 29/05/2019 09:20

Infected finger. Is it by the nail? It looks like pus. As it’s a baby, don’t squeeze, see the doctor or HV. Nothing to worry about, though. DS1 had a small infection along his nail as a small baby, the HV just squeezed it, but it was a smaller patch than your baby’s.

Shitsandgigglez · 29/05/2019 09:22

Hey OP, I agree with others about it being a little infection and probably from when he had his nail cut (easily done!). Is he on antibiotics from after his operation at all?

He will be fine if you wait until 3pm but I would have been the same with my first and wanted it checked out sooner considering his recent op so totally understand you not wanting to wait until then.

My DC had one of these and they just said to check out for the infection tracking down the finger. it only looks red at the very top so I can see from the picture that it's not. But if the redness starts to move further down the finger then that means the infection is tracking and to get checked out sooner.

Personally I would see pharmacist this morning and Then wait until 3 for GP. If pharmacist is concerned they will tell you. Thats assuming no fever and your baby generally well.

HelloJackie · 29/05/2019 09:28

DS had one of those on his thumb. Came from absolutely nowhere and showed no sign of how it got there. Didn't bother DS one bit and ended up popping by itself one night (after a few days of growing bigger and uglier). Looked awful as it healed back up but his thumb is completely back to normal now. I wouldn't worry with the doctors unless it is painful or possibly infected.

HelloJackie · 29/05/2019 09:31

Oh and his bedding stank of decaying fish when it did finally burst so be prepared to wash duvets and scrub the mattress while your eyes water.

MaverickSnoopy · 29/05/2019 09:32

If you're worried then pharmacist this morning and gp later.

I understand why people can downplay infected fingers - give it a squeeze et al - but please don't. DH had an infected finger not too long ago and needed two consecutive courses of antibiotics to fix it and daily dressing - a day longer and he would have lost his finger. He squeezed it. Squeezing it can give drastically wrong. It can also be fine of course.

I understand how you feel, my DD was admitted to hospital at 4do with a severe infection and we were in for a week - I won't go into details but I felt very shaken for a long time after and something like this would have made me feel very anxious. She was my 3rd too so I don't think PFB makes a blind bit of difference. He'll be fine though and you're going to get him seen, the professionals will do whatever is needed.

Runkle · 29/05/2019 09:32

I would see a pharmacist then GP at 3.

greathat · 29/05/2019 09:33

Go and see a pharmacist. They are trained professionals!

Drum2018 · 29/05/2019 09:34

Just looks like an infection where a bit of skin may have pulled at the nail. Ds had a similar looking one as a toddler, and needed antibiotics - pharmacist couldn't give anything without prescription so had to go to gp. Seeing as you have gp appointment today, I'd wait for that. I put tea tree oil on his too. The old skin just came off a few days later like a hard bit of plastic and new skin was fine. Bit gross but wasn't serious. He's 17 now and if I see any of the kids, or even Dh, picking or biting at their nails I still bring up the time he got an infection Smile

IHateUncleJamie · 29/05/2019 09:34

Well it looks infected to me, especially with a “green dot” in the middle.

I agree with pps; either Pharmacist this morning or show the Doctor this afternoon.

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 29/05/2019 09:51

If you are going to the docs later what's the panic?

Crispysausagerolls · 29/05/2019 11:12

Saw a doctor because I am a worrier and she said it’s something babies get around their finger sometimes and that she is not keen to give antibiotics but his paedatrician later might disagree. That it may drain in the bath if given a little squeeze but otherwise to keep an eye out as if it gets red I should go to a and e if out of hours as it’s an infection then

jayho · 29/05/2019 11:19

Aww, bless you, they're mucky little buggers and get little infections all the time. I can see why you'd fret with recent surgery. I'd probably wrap it in cotton wool with a mild disinfectant (not the whole baby ;) ) but avoid squeezing.

Whatsername7 · 29/05/2019 11:25

I would drain it. Then apply some germolene or savlon. Honestly, it will be fine and draining it is better than waiting for it to burst.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/05/2019 11:32

Soaking in warm salt water three times a day and a antiseptic cream in between. If it starts to spread or baby gets ill see GP again.

Crispysausagerolls · 29/05/2019 17:47

You are all absolutely amazing!

The paedatrician has confirmed it’s probably paronychia or whitlow (can’t really tell which). These babies eh?! Here’s hoping it drains in the bath and doesn’t get worse 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
RuffleCrow · 29/05/2019 17:51

It looks infected. GP asap as infections can spread and worsen quickly in babies so young.

RuffleCrow · 29/05/2019 17:52

Oops x post.

Crispysausagerolls · 29/05/2019 18:50

The bath did nothing! I will now be living on bloody eggshells until it goes away or gets worse!!!

OP posts:
managedmis · 29/05/2019 18:55

Did it just appear overnight? Never heard of whitlow

Crispysausagerolls · 30/05/2019 09:40

Yes, suddenly it was there in the morning. Still there 😢
