to not let dd watch dr who?

Well am I??

She has asked quite a few times but I've always thought she is too young- she is 6 next week- but it turns out a few of her friends watch it and she is feeling left out when they talk about it. They also take the mick cos she likes Fifi.

How many of you let your dc's watch it and do they get scared?

thanks x

I THINK the bbc website gives 'certifiacte-style ratings for episodes of Dr who.

have to say we are all big Who fan inour hosue though and have been since hte new ones started with christopher Ecclestone. DCs now 8 and 6.

pointydog · 23/07/2007 15:01

completely depends on the child, so I'd let her watch one and take it from there.

dd2 is banned from watching it as it kept giving her nightmares and she's 8.

CrookshanksWhiskers · 23/07/2007 15:09

My dd3 was only a few months old when the new Who started & used to just sit in her bouncy seat or on my knee while I watched it. Once she got a bit older & started paying some attention to the telly she loved Dr Who & is a huge fan now - one of her favourite games is to run around like a lunatic yelling 'the daleks are coming, the daleks are coming' then leap up onto the couch shouting 'phew that was close', all the while laughing like mad.

I'm almost finished knitting her a Dr Who doll as at 2.4 she's too small for the action figures but really wants her own Dr Who. Plus as a handy bonus anything she is scared of (such as big dogs) I can just tel her it's okay 'cos Dr Who will chase them all away & she accepts that quite happily 'cos she's seen him saving people time after time.

We all watch it together in our house. Me, DH and DD (6) and DS (3)

But you know your child best and don't let them if you don't want to. It is a bit scary but my two know it is just pretend and we discuss how they film it with them.

mintchips · 23/07/2007 15:15

Oh well serenity at least I have a good reason why she cant watch it

My DS (5) absolutely loves Dr Who, as does my DP, who has been a fan since he was a child. They even watch the old series episodes of it together, which I find too dull to sit through. I like the new series but find the 'monsters' in the old episodes too laughable. Who'd be scared of some fella crawling along wearing green bubble wrap? Anyway, the new series does have some scary moments but generally speaking it's no worse than other sppoky kids shows, and as someone else pointed out, the Sarah Jane Adventures will be starting soon and it might be a good introduction for your DD.

theprecious · 23/07/2007 18:30

some of the episodes scare me (31), the "are you my mummy?" one - ewwwww.

donnie · 23/07/2007 18:31

dd1 is also nearly 6 and has never watched it. It is too scarey IMO. However, her reception teacher is very into it and he has told them all about it so she is clued up about daleks and cybermen!!

I think it's all about the individual child. They will also find different things scary at different stages of their development for example DD1, just turned 5, sobbed her heart out last week at Harry Potter 1 film even tho she had seen it lots of times before, had had the book read to her and listened to CD-the reason-she had just clicked what his parents being dead actually meant. Broke her heart. However I avoided letting her watching Dr Who as I thought it too scary and when DH relented and let her watch one she lapped it up-no nightmares, lots of questions but seemed to accept it was fantasy. In fact she had a Dr Who birthday cake instead of the usual Barbie. Didnt let her eat David Tennant's face tho so had longer to drool...

wildwoman · 23/07/2007 18:54

My 2 love it (3 and 5) which fine except my youngest went through a phase of going up to strangers saying "blink and you're dead!" which was a little embarressing especially if they don't watch Dr Who!

Enid · 23/07/2007 18:56

dont do it

dd1 begged and we watched one episode and she has had nighmares ever since

it was really really frightening

MissGrissindor · 23/07/2007 20:06

My DS (2.2)has never seen it, but somehow can still name him if he sees his picture. Ditto Harry Potter. Weird

Enid · 23/07/2007 20:10

agree with geekgirl - I also think when I hear about kids younger than 6 being so into it

dont get me wrong I rather love sci fi and horror, and used to love dr who when younger, but I was quite shocked at the level of weirdness and freakieness in the episode I saw.

Would find it odd that a child of 7 and under wouldnt be affected by it

lucykate · 23/07/2007 20:11

no yanbu

my dd is 5.5 and she's never seen it. she has nightmares easliy, even from scooby doo.

we took her to the cinema to see curse of the were rabbit and she couldn't sleep properly for nearly 2 weeks after.

agnesnitt · 23/07/2007 20:16

Wildwoman, my daughter used to terrorise strangers with a Doctor Who line too... She used to lie in wait for people coming to the house then open our letterbox and ask politely "are you my mummy?"

Agnes

pointydog · 23/07/2007 20:18

yep, enid, I find it really scary myself. Very eerie atmospheres are created

Enid · 23/07/2007 20:54

it absolutely melted dd1's mind

it was the first one of the new series

rain going up
people in hospital transported to the moon (much terror and screaming)
alien race drinking peoples blood through a straw while they were still alive

erm

pointydog · 23/07/2007 21:36

the first one dd2 saw was the Shakespeare/voodoo dolls one. She was for over a week

Elasticwoman · 23/07/2007 21:54

I watched Dr Who myself from about age 4 (back in the 60s!) and although I was terrified and had a few nightmares, I also enjoyed it and would have felt left out if not allowed to watch. I used to sit on my dad's knee. Can remember older brother once threatening to put me in front of Dr Who WITHOUT the security of dad's knee and I said I'll close my eyes and he said I'll prop them open with matchsticks!

DS age 7 has been watching since the first Christopher Eccleston series so I think he must have been under 6 then. Yes, sometimes gets scared but that's the point isn't it?

pointydog · 23/07/2007 21:57

but elastic, the old Dr Who was crap

Elasticwoman · 23/07/2007 21:59

You may be right Pointydog but at 4 years old my powers of crap-detection were somewhat less honed than they are today.

Elasticwoman · 23/07/2007 22:00

And at least Dr Who didn't snog any one in the original series (ewww!)

Enid · 23/07/2007 22:03

yes it was shite then [fond]

Biglips · 23/07/2007 22:09

so is 8 yrs old is about the right age then?? (sorry for the hijack)
