To ask the owner to pay me

I work in a small company made up of 3 directors who are the owner and his 2 sons and 3 staff one of whom is the office manager.

We always get paid on the 28th of each month, so on the 27th or the working day before the 27th the manager loads the payments and gets the owner to authorise them and then they hit our accounts on the 28th.

I checked today and there was no wage in my account, I spoke to the Manager and she said she was too busy to load the payments before today and the owner is in a bad mood she does not want to bother him today.

I have direct debits and standing orders that have come out my account today and I just received a text from my bank saying there are not enough funds to make the payments and I would need to pay funds in by 2pmm_ in order for the payments to be made and to avoid charges.

I told my Manager this and she said there is nothing she can do at the moment as she does not want to bother the owner.

AIBU to go to the owner myself and asked to be paid? I do not want to get charges or late payment strikes, I am not really sure where I stand with this.

I don’t really have much dealings with the owner usually he comes and goes and nods or says hello but that’s as far as communication goes with him and I.

Hell yes!!! Go and speak to them right now

marvellousnightforamooncup · 28/05/2019 13:42

I would.

HuckfromScandal · 28/05/2019 13:43

Absolutely!!

Medee · 28/05/2019 13:44

WTF, yes!

Also, for future reference having a gap between pay day and your DDs would be sensible.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 28/05/2019 13:44

How ridiculous! It doesn't matter what mood this boss is in, paying staff comes first!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 28/05/2019 13:44

I would ask.

birthdaymayhem · 28/05/2019 13:44

I would, but tactfully. The money is owed to you as you have worked for it.

You managers response is rather ridiculous TBH.

Twickerhun · 28/05/2019 13:45

Do you have a pay day stipulated in your contract? They may be in breach of contract if that helps focus their attention

Hwory · 28/05/2019 13:45

I would.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/05/2019 13:46

WTF- paying people is not optional. They need to make a CHAPS payment now!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 28/05/2019 13:49

Like fuck would I accept not getting paid on time because someone "doesn't want to bother" someone! That's completely unacceptable. Go to the owner directly.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 28/05/2019 13:51

Your manager is completely in the wrong here. Yes go ask your boss.

MoveOnTheCards · 28/05/2019 13:53

What?! That’s crazy! Yes, speak to the owner now!

MatchSetPoint · 28/05/2019 13:54

YES! Go and tell the owner ASAP. Your boss is being ridiculous!

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 13:54

They're not really a manager are they ....

squee123 · 28/05/2019 13:55

I would totally speak to the owner and politely but firmly explain the financial implications that this has for you and ask for it to be rectified now.

BuildBuildings · 28/05/2019 13:56

This is completely unacceptable. Do you have a contract saying the date of pay? Yiu need to ask the owner directly. You're not working for the fun of it!

TheInvestigator · 28/05/2019 13:57

Speak to them and also question what the procedure is for your future reference because not being paid isn't OK and you need to know how to approach this if it happens again as your manager hasn't backed you up. Bet they've sorted their own pay though.

GiveMeFiveMinutes · 28/05/2019 13:59

I'd ask them to cover any costs incurred as a result of missed direct debits, assuming that your contract states that your pay date is 28th of each month.

isthatabloborwhat · 28/05/2019 13:59

Your manager doesn't want to bother the big boss today because that would mean having to admit that they forgot to do the payments on time.

Justaboy · 28/05/2019 14:01

Suspicious old me would wonder if they have the money to pay you?.

I can pay our staff from the mobile phone in my hand why the delay & fuss?..

Comefromaway · 28/05/2019 14:02

What does your contract say. Our contracts say payment by close of business on 23rd of the month (in practice we do it on 22nd). It's always wise to have a few days in between you rpayment going in and direct debits going out in case there is a banking problem.

Merryoldgoat · 28/05/2019 14:03

Personally I’d say to the office manager I’m contacting the owner myself and see the response but you are absolutely entitled to your money on time.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 28/05/2019 14:05

Yes contact your director, and say the office manager hasn’t paid you, and you also need covering for charges incurred. Paying is not an option!

billybagpuss · 28/05/2019 14:05

disclaimer my knowledge is very very out of date and I expect automation has become more efficient.

Small company salaries used to be done via ACP which would take 3 working days so either:

a) your manager is seriously shit at his job and should be fired or
b) the company is in trouble

There are 2 things you need to do first is talk to the owner and ask what the hell is going on, the second is call your bank and ask for some leeway on your payments that are going out today. (I'd do it in that order so you have all the knowledge before speaking to your bank)

Good luck, either way your manager should be fired screwing with staff salaries is not an option.
