Baby circumcised without mother’s permission. Certainly puts some overstepping boundaries stories into perspective. 😱 diply.com/33269/mom-has-grandparents-arrested-after-they-circumcise-her-son-with

BBC article

brummiesue · 27/05/2019 20:12

I feel absolutely furious for that mum and her poor baby, those grandparents would never set eyes on that child againAngry

LimeKiwi · 27/05/2019 20:31

That's appalling, I hope they're never allowed near the child again.

stucknoue · 27/05/2019 20:34

Horrible. The sooner this barbaric practice is ended the better. Religion is no excuse, it's mutilation. If it's needed for medical reasons fine or a grown man wishes to undertake this they can pay privately.

Had a huge row with a friend the other day who wants his son done, they are Christian so I was shocked. We've all told him it's tantamount to child abuse!

FadedRed · 27/05/2019 20:38

This story is from 2017. It’s also awful that the police didn’t consider this an issue at the time it was reported, and the mother had to fight to get this recognised as assault.

StillMe1 · 27/05/2019 20:44

Just awful. It looks like the grandparents may have in some way faked the mother's consent, possibly forging her signature or having someone pretend to be the mother. I would have thought both of these situations are illegal.
Poor baby

S1naidSucks · 27/05/2019 20:46

Is there no mention of the father? The doctor should be struck off, as he didn’t actually speak to the mother and check if she had given permission. If the child was in hospital the parents would need to give permission, even for blood tests. I hope they never see that grandchild again, the arrogant gits.

randomchap · 27/05/2019 20:46

The doctor wasn't prosecuted, nor was the father or paternal grandmother.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 27/05/2019 20:47

Thats fucking disgusting. I disagree with circumcision anyway though, except for medical reasons. But this..I would be raging, and it was considered not a criminal matter too, then they got out of it by claiming the mother consented. Just awful.

S1naidSucks · 27/05/2019 20:48

Oh sorry. I see the father was involved with the butchering of his child.

bluebluezoo · 27/05/2019 20:53

Presumably it was done by an Imam in a religious ceremony rather than hospital.

Good on the mother for pursuing it.

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 27/05/2019 20:55

I hope they never got to see the baby again.

Antigon · 27/05/2019 20:56

If the father gave his consent, then no crime has been committed. Unless it's a requirement that both parents need to give consent?

Antigon · 27/05/2019 20:57

Presumably it was done by an Imam in a religious ceremony rather than hospital.

Why not actually read the articles?

It was done by a doctor in a medical centre (not a Muslim).

IdaDown · 27/05/2019 20:57

This should trigger new guidelines - 2 parents written consent unless extenuating circumstances ie widowhood, medical necessary.

  • I’m not pro circumcision.
bluebluezoo · 27/05/2019 21:00

Why not actually read the articles?

Because I kept getting the red warning screen and then into a “win an iphone” loop on the first link Grin

Have since read the bbc link which clears it up.

As pp said, if dad consented that will be why no prosecution?

FuckMNDoubleStandards · 27/05/2019 21:04

@bluebluezoo Why not just read the article before commenting? It will help you look less ridiculous in the future.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 27/05/2019 21:05

I'd do time if someone did that to my child. I'd want to sneak into PIL house while they're asleep and hack an ear off. I mean, it's more hygienic right? Less ear to clean? It looks better. It's not an essential body part.... their hearing wouldn't be effected much, just like circumcision doesn't make much difference to penises......

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/05/2019 21:06

When qualified in maternity nursing we were taught 'If a boy's parents choose to have him circumcised they should be supported and if a girl's parents choose to have her circumcised they should be reported'.

Why the hell are we still 'supporting' circumcision in 2019? People are angry that this was done without the mother's consent. They should be angry it was done at all!!

FuckMNDoubleStandards · 27/05/2019 21:06

@bluebluezoo Just read your further post, then common sense says to not comment until you know facts. You brought religion in to the mix when it was not an aspect of the case.

sonjadog · 27/05/2019 21:12

Beside the point, but that was probably the most annoying article I have ever read. Is it especially produced for people that cannot comprehend more than two lines of text at a time?? Please let that not be the future of news reporting.

canary19 · 27/05/2019 21:15

I've always though circumcision is a barbaric act that should be illegal - I don't understand how another person is allowed to mutilate another - who gives anyone the right to make a decision like that? The child is unable to consent. Surely this is just male genital mutilation - it's illegal for girls so why do they allow it for boys? I wonder if the government are scared to take it on for fear of offending the religions that practise this. Religious beliefs should never get to trump human rights.

S1naidSucks · 27/05/2019 21:16

It’s ok bluebluezoo, I didn’t read the article properly either. I think the abuse performed on this child is the most important issue here. I’m glad that the act of circumcision is decreasing, due to the campaigning against it, but it needs to be made illegal, along with piercing babies ears.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/05/2019 21:19

It’s not clear if the dad gave consent or not (I assume it was his parents who did this).

How is consent shown and is it checked?
Could any baby sitter take a baby to the doctor and ask for a procedure then? Why do I have to fill out forms for school to say that they can take ds to the doctor or hospital if they can’t get a hold of me or his dad?

I hope the mum kept the grandparents away from the baby and of dad was involved - then I’d be tempted to throw him away too.

Antigon · 27/05/2019 21:29

Well, no, it's not ok. She made a presumption which was incorrect. That's how rumours start. And not reading an 'article properly' is nothing to be proud of when you're going to spout an opinion on it.
