To think this may be dangerous

Armadilloboss · 27/05/2019 17:19

Just went on social media and a girl I know who has given birth 10 weeks ago has uploaded a video of her feeding the baby smashed avocado!

I always thought the guideline was nothing Til 4 months, which has not been changed to 6. Surely 10 weeks is far too early!!

OP posts:
1CantPickAName · 27/05/2019 17:21

Yes it’s dangerous. Did you comment on her post?

beefthief · 27/05/2019 23:32

Have you contacted the mother @Armadilloboss It could be dangerous

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 27/05/2019 23:42

A woman I worked with years ago, posted this week that her DS had enjoyed his porridge and his pudding which looked like a chocolate pudding/custard type thing. Her baby is 11 weeks old. One of her friends posted, ooh I didn't realise he was getting that grown up already, I've only just started feeding little Johnny food this week, how quickly six months flies (or was so PA I assume she's on here somewhere). She replied, well he's nearly four months (counting isn't her strong point) and it'll help with his tummy issues. She's waxed lyrical about his reflux and suspected CMPA, I'm not sure how porridge and custard will help....

beefthief · 28/05/2019 10:16

I've barely slept worrying about this. Please update OP.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/05/2019 10:18

Most reflux babies do get weaned early but only onto non gluten foods and very little at that

PurpleDaisies · 28/05/2019 10:19

I've barely slept worrying about this.

Confused Really?

SallyWD · 28/05/2019 10:24

In the old days babies were fed much earlier. My mum said she added any rice or cereal to my milk when I was 3 months old to fill me up and help me sleep better. Everyone did it back then. I've no idea if feeding a young baby avocado is dangerous. They should look in to it

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 10:24

@beefthief you barely slept worrying about a post on a website (that may or may not be true) about a baby you don't know getting a bit of avocado (which it's likely to spit out)?!

Op yes it could be harmful for a baby that age to be fed anything except formula or breast milk. I'm not sure what I'd do about it though tbh. Possibly a comment along the lines of "I thought ... was only 10 weeks?! They can't be weaning age already surely" or a passive aggressive link to nhs weaning advice.

AuntMarch · 28/05/2019 10:24

I was eating food by 4 months, as was normal then, but I'm pretty sure even that wouldn't have started with chocolate pudding or avocado!
I really hope someone has sent a link to some proper advice - how well do you know her?

Abra1de · 28/05/2019 10:26

I believe the first weaning food in Israel is often avocado. Perhaps not this early!

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 10:26

@SallyWD how old are you? I'm 32 soon, was breastfed for 4 months then formula for another month before being given food. My mum specifically remembers thinking it was silly trying to feed me actual food as I just spat it out so she waited another month until I looked interested at 5 months. As far as I know weaning advice was not before 4 months then.

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 10:27

Also 10 weeks is only 2.5 months.

SparklyMagpie · 28/05/2019 10:27

That's a little worrying in itself don'tcha think? @beefthief

taylorlynn · 28/05/2019 10:28

Send her a private message and ask

herculepoirot2 · 28/05/2019 10:32

I don’t honestly know. I know it’s not recommended but I have no idea about the level of risk.

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 10:33

A quick google shows weaning from 4-6 months has been the advice for the past 40 years and 6 months the past 16 years.

People haven't weaned before 3 months for over 40 years. It's mad that someone would give a new born food these days.

Passthecherrycoke · 28/05/2019 10:37

A 10 week old isn’t going to eat anything Hmm I can’t believe someone is claiming not to have slept all night over it

BitterSweenSyn · 28/05/2019 10:39

I've barely slept worrying about this.

I’m sorry but I snorted with laughter at this Grin (only mildly dramatizing to suit the tone!)

This drives me mad OP, I know lots of idiotic arseholes who start very early but “it did them no harm”

Lovemusic33 · 28/05/2019 10:39

Weaned my first from 3 months (when the advice was 4 months), she’s still alive Grin. I don’t think I would lose sleep over it. The 6 month thing is the advice you are given, it is advice and not law. Chances are the baby spat most of it out anyway.

Many of us were advised to add baby rice to bottles or a bit of rusk. I’m sure not many babies died from this, it’s just the advice has changed due to risk of stomach issues and allergies (because we now know more).

YouTheCat · 28/05/2019 10:40

I went with my gut with my kids. Ds was 14 weeks when I started him on baby rice and pureed veg (homemade - carrots, swede etc). He had awful reflux and wasn't gaining much weight at all. It worked for him. The reflux improved massively, he gained weight, he slept better and his colic disappeared. But this was nearly 25 years ago.

I don't think avocado is a good idea at this age as it's so rich.

SmileEachDay · 28/05/2019 10:42

At 10 weeks all a baby will do with smashed avocado is possibly smash it a bit more, possibly with some smearing.

They’ll then need a bath.

I've barely slept worrying about this. Please update OP this is ridiculous.

SunshineCake · 28/05/2019 10:43

Clearly beefthief is being sarcastic. Bloody hell.

81Byerley · 28/05/2019 10:45

In 1970 my 5lb 9oz baby, born 23rd November, had Heinz strained turkey dinner on Christmas Day, on the advice of the Health Visitor. Wouldn't dream of doing it now, but that was the advice then. He survived!

TheDeadlyAlien · 28/05/2019 10:49

I started putting Weetabix in the bottle of mine when they are around 4-6 weeks old to fill them up longer, also started given them baby rice for breakfast, this was on the advice of the health visitor. Weaning was started much earlier around 30 years ago

stop stressing.

floraloctopus · 28/05/2019 10:59

An avocado is smooth and creamy when mashed – a perfect food that will be more readily accepted as baby begins solids. Avocado may be offered as early as 4 – 6 months old.

My DCs loved avocado when they were tiny, it was one of their first foods.
