Just went on social media and a girl I know who has given birth 10 weeks ago has uploaded a video of her feeding the baby smashed avocado!

I always thought the guideline was nothing Til 4 months, which has not been changed to 6. Surely 10 weeks is far too early!!

Borisdaspide · 28/05/2019 15:51

the wait until 6 months advice is already contradicted by those giving it out

Doing something under specific medical advice is obviously different to just deciding to do it off your own back though, isn't it?

mumsneedwine · 28/05/2019 15:58

My mum used to put a tot of whisky in my bottle on the advice of the doctor as I didn't sleep. I'm 52 and seem to have survived.

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 16:00

@mumsneedwine your username is ironic Grin

floraloctopus · 28/05/2019 16:03

My mum used to put a tot of whisky in my bottle

She was being very unreasonable to do that, whisky belongs in the jar.

mumsneedwine · 28/05/2019 16:05

Can't stand the stuff now - username says it all !! Oh and she did this from 6 weeks to me and my brother. Solids as well. Amazing I made it out of nappies 😂😂

Dorsetdays · 28/05/2019 16:05

I’m 46 and my milk addition was brandy...again on the advice of our family doctor for the same reason!

isthatabloborwhat · 28/05/2019 16:10

There was once a time (that lasted a good few million years or so) when weaning was done on instinct.

The human race is still here as far as I know.

Passthecherrycoke · 28/05/2019 16:13

Yes and they were really healthy then weren’t they isthatablobornot Grin

bluebluezoo · 28/05/2019 16:14

I'm 52 and seem to have survived

Those who didn’t survive aren’t going to be on here posting that they didn’t, are they? Grin

Dorsetdays · 28/05/2019 16:14

@passthecherrycoke. Less allergies though 😉

1forAll74 · 28/05/2019 16:18

My two children were born in the 1970 era, and I gave them little amounts of food after their milk at around 3 months old.Usually it was weetabix or rusks, and kind of very mushed up in some milk. It was all fine, and lots of mums did the same. Both my children were 8lb in weight when born. I don't know much about avocado,it didn't seem to be that much available then. and I have never eaten any anyway.

newjobnerves · 28/05/2019 16:21

FFS and there's still the "didn't do me any harm" army too, good to see there's still a big group of internet mums who know more than scientists, mums know best eh. If I'm feeling nostalgic for the baby days I just need to find a weaning thread 😊

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 16:21

@isthatabloborwhat I've thought about that before and I've always assumed that in 'caveman days' babies would have started eating solids when they picked it up and ate it.

suzy2b · 28/05/2019 16:22

I am 64 children 35 and 33 I was also a childrens nanny before that never have i heard about giving weetabix in a bottle was told never to put anything except milk in a bottle, started giving mine baby rice a t14 weeks

BettysLeftTentacle · 28/05/2019 16:24

I never wore a seatbelt in the 70s, I’m still alive 🤷‍♀️ it wasn’t even a law then so I wouldn’t worry about it now.

grumiosmum · 28/05/2019 16:25

meh ... I started mine on bacon sarnies when they were 6 weeks' old.

Strapping rugby players now!

suzy2b · 28/05/2019 16:30

Also my granddaughter 4 had very bad reflux all she was given was gavascon nobody told her to give her food

MumNeMum · 28/05/2019 16:42

I think a lot of food guidelines are quite strict because advice has to be appropriate for all countries, including deprived countries with poor sanitation and food hygiene knowledge. I'm sure a health visitor told me that. Therefore, not starting until 4 months is probably more about a baby's immune system rather than an inability to digest food.

Definitely need to look into this in more detail before getting too stressed about it.

Dorsetdays · 28/05/2019 16:55

@newjobnerves. People will always post about their own personal experiences because, by and large, that’s what MN is about so not sure why you’re upset about that.

I think what it demonstrates is that, despite the ‘advice’, people are still often following their own instincts and parenting their DC as the individuals that they are.

If I’m honest, I haven’t seen any data which 100% clarifies why weaning before 6 months is actually such an issue. As I mentioned in a previous post, even the NHS website is somewhat vague on the reasons....

isthatabloborwhat · 28/05/2019 16:57

Yes and they were really healthy then weren't they

Healthy enough to reproduce and ensure the existence of the species, yes. Otherwise none of us would be here.

Ravingstarfish · 28/05/2019 16:59

kaytee87
I’m aware of this.
I was young and naively thought the health visitor knew best

QueenofmyPrinces · 28/05/2019 17:00

I knew a 13 week old baby who was being given puréed roast chicken dinners, complete with puréed potatoes, vegetables and then the gravy too.

Thankfully I was in a professional role which meant I could put an end to their madness.

It’s bonkers what some people do.

Elphame · 28/05/2019 17:03

The health visitor put DS on solids at 10 weeks old as he was a huge baby and needed more calories.

He survived and is now a strapping 6ft 6. Avocado is a common weaning food in some parts of the world. 6 months always seems very late to me and I do wonder if there is a correlation between the seeming rise in serious food allergies.

isthatabloborwhat · 28/05/2019 17:05

I've always assumed that in 'caveman days' babies would have started eating solids when they picked it up and ate it

@kaytee87 - apparently the adult would chew food to a pulp and transfer it to the infant's mouth. Other primates like chimps do this.

RedElephants · 28/05/2019 17:06

My MIL, she's 84, was premature and given Brandy on the advice of the midwives and Dr apparently..
Oh and didn't have a cot, she slept in a drawer..
