Are the Silentnight hippo/duck lesbians?

Our new bedding arrived yesterday and the DC were asking me about the hippo and duck logo and I was explaining about the old advert/branding etc.
Looking at the logo the DC decided that as both the hippo and the duck have long eyelashes they are both female. I told them that anyone can have long eyelashes, but they were much more comfortable with the idea that they are inter species lesbian couple than that a male could have such good lashes!
What are your thoughts?
Also why do kids need to know this kind of stuff??

Why do kids need to know what kind of stuff? Confused

FudgeBrownie2019 · 27/05/2019 15:08

DS8 here has the longest lashes ever. Boys can totally have lovely lashes.

That’s crazy- the hippo is wearing man’s pyjamas! Though I see the duck isn’t wearing anything, the floosie!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 27/05/2019 15:14

I’ve no idea. Society today is obsessed with making these things “the norm” and it’s just wrong. We don’t all need long eyelashes and the sooner people realise that the better.

Elledouble · 27/05/2019 15:15

No, they’re cartoons. HTH.

CitadelsofScience · 27/05/2019 15:15

Have you had a bank holiday snifter too many?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2019 15:15

The power of the media. It has convinced children, against all RL evidence, that girls have eyelashes and boys don't.

SVRT19674 · 27/05/2019 15:17

You do realise they are not real people?

LaBelleSausage · 27/05/2019 15:18

It’s possible the hippo has transitioned since, but was definitely using male pronouns in 2002

“Why do kids need to know this stuff?”

What? That lesbians exist? Do fuck off with your homophobic bullshit.

Elclr · 27/05/2019 15:21

I'm impressed your children are so accepting that a female duck and hippo could have a happy life together.

Why do they need to know this? So that "lesbian" and "gay" aren't the abusive insults they were when I was at school 🙃

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2019 15:26

priceonomics.com/how-an-ad-campaign-made-lesbians-fall-in-love-with/

Knowing that women exist, have relationships with each other and buy stuff is called 'marketing'. Many male advert people fail to understand this to their cost. Subaru made a fortune out of it.

DD would also be 100% on board with the female duck/hippo household but not with the eyelashes. Sexism is alive and well and homophobia is hopefully on the wane (I'm more hopeful than convinced of this). I'm troubled that it's apparently a duckling and therefore abusive.

Yabbers · 27/05/2019 15:29

I’m impressed. My 10 year old would be obsessed with a hippo and a duck being in a relationship and how would they have met, what would their names be, what would their babies be called, would it be hipoduck or duckippo etc etc. She has uncles who are gay so that part of the conversation has been had long ago.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/05/2019 15:31

I'd be more worried about the physics of any hippo and duck relationship whatever the gender.

Saying that I've always thought the hippo was a boy. Which possibly makes it worse. Now I feel dirty. I hope they're just good friends!

Hefzi · 27/05/2019 15:32

@LaBelleSausage GrinGrinGrin

LaBelleSausage · 27/05/2019 15:37

Can’t assume anything these days @Hefzi Grin

If I remember correctly there are three offspring, a female duck and two male hippos. It’s not totally obvious if these are a result of interspecies coupling or just a blended family though

Hefzi · 27/05/2019 17:34

Surely a blended family, @LaBelleSausage ? Otherwise the logistics of a duck birthing a hippo would get in the way? (Not intended as speciesist comment - though perhaps the duck identifies as a hippo, and thus it's not so inconceivable Grin)

TinselAngel · 27/05/2019 17:46

Anybody who is surprised by interspecies love has not watched enough of The Muppets.

FuckBrussel · 27/05/2019 17:56

How dare you assume they actually identify as a duck and a hippo? They might prefer to be addressed as a Rothschild's giraffe and an aardvaark, for all you know.

6079SmithW · 27/05/2019 21:27

Ok so I think I was a little unclear ..

Firstly this thread was supposed to be LIGHTHEARTED 🙂

Secondly @CloserIAm2Fine there is absolutely no homophobia in this house from me or anyone else.

Thirdly when I said why do they need to know this stuff, by 'stuff' I meant whether the hippo/duck were make or female. It had never even occurred to me to think about it. They ask me bizarre questions like this all the time. I know they are trying to understand the world but do other DC do the same?

@LaBelleSausage thanks for ad! 🙂

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2019 21:41

@6079SmithW oh yes kids need to know all this stuff and more. Like why does Winnie the pooh wear a top but no pants. Why is he called Winnie when that was great grandmas name so a girl name. Why can George only say dinosaur. Where are Max and Rubys parents. Why cant we have a pet llama. The list is endless

MitziK · 27/05/2019 21:48

I'm more concerned about the age of the fluffy yellow duckling.

Is it old enough to consent?
