If you were forced to move out of the UK which snacks would you miss the most?

I'm just curious about which snacks would be most missed if you were forced to move to another country? Not really AIBU but posting here for traffic.

Ryvita and fruit pastilles. Neither has made it to France.

PetitsGateaux · 26/05/2019 19:38

I was about to comment that I can order or find most UK snacks so don’t miss any in particular, but then within a few posts I had to agree: chip shop chips! Most definitely!

BlueJava · 26/05/2019 19:39

I lived in mainland China and Hong Kong - didn't really miss any snacks, but I did miss cheese! Especially blue cheese!

toomuchtooold · 26/05/2019 19:42

Quavers, Mr Kipling apple pies and cherry bakewells, square crisps and minty aero. Which, along with about 50 quids' worth of generic OTC medicine (paracetamol, ibuprofen, loratadine and loperamide - all upwards of 3 quid for 12 here in Germany) make up my entire baggage whenever I come back from the UK. And kettle chips until about a year ago, when (whisper it) a German company started doing better posh crisps than you get in the UK...

MyAuntyBadger · 26/05/2019 19:51

Sandwiches, the white sliced loaves of bread in a lot of countries (incl Spain and America) are sweet; it's like putting ham or cheese in between two slices of cake.

bliminy · 26/05/2019 20:23

This thread has made me hungry :-)

I miss crappy Greggs deliciousness, sausages, pies and Monster Munch. I do miss a few chocolate bars too but I generally forget they exist till I'm actually in a British shop going 'Ooooh Star Bars!'

I'm baffled that people still think you can't easily find good cheese in US supermarkets. I can only assume they've either only ever shopped in Walmart, or haven't actually been to the US in the last decade.

MountainPeakGeek · 26/05/2019 20:32

@GreyofSunshine "marmite -
Widely available here (Canada)"

Yes, but have you compared them? The Canadian version is crap. Different recipe and colour, not even the same taste. I still smuggle it back from the UK. Grin Apparently the UK version isn't allowed to be sold in Canada because we (in Canada) are only allowed to have certain foods "fortified" with added vitamins and marmite doesn't qualify, so we have this insipid imposter on our supermarket shelves.

OpalTree · 26/05/2019 20:33

Walkers crisps and jam doughnuts

IntoValhalla · 26/05/2019 20:38

Mountain I am now imagining you getting stopped at customs and arrested for your criminal marmite stash Grin

Sarahlou63 · 26/05/2019 20:40

Galaxy chocolate, and Galaxy hot chocolate. Thankfully I can buy online.

GreyofSunshine · 27/05/2019 03:34

I didn't know that! Can't say that I'd noticed any difference.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 27/05/2019 03:52

I wasn't forced out (bit weird that the thread was titled that way, people do move voluntarily) and the list of stuff I miss is massive.

Decent chocolate biscuits.
Massive variety of crisps especially posh crisps.
Cheese.
Cheap bakery products
Bread that doesn't instantly turn to mush in your mouth yet is weirdly dry
Those packs of 5 cookies for a pound from the supermarket
Branston pickle

The list is endless. You can buy some things here but it's a faff and I can't be arsed trailing round 10 different shops in 10 different neighbourhoods to get different things.

The internet makes it easier but the shipping costs can be awful and a lot of American stuff is available but less British stuff.

Wincarnis · 27/05/2019 04:41

Toffee Crisp
Double Decker

Not really snacks but also miss
Salad Cream
Mushy Peas
Yorkshire Tea
English Cheese

IamSerena · 27/05/2019 04:42

Indian food
Chinese food
Salt and vinegar crisps
Greggs sausage rolls
Tesco finest coleslaw
Cadburys chocolate
REAL tea!!!
Bisto
Liquorice Allsorts
Magners cider
(voluntarily moved abroad)

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 27/05/2019 06:06

Omg I live abroad and I miss, SO badly:

  • Cadburys buttons
  • Flakes
  • Crunchies
  • Walkers cheese and onion crisps
  • Twiglets
  • Marmite in general
  • Custard

Not things I even eat often at home, but now that the option is not there I'm craving them so badly. Ohh this thread has made me hungry and sad

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 27/05/2019 06:06

Omg sausage rolls
Pasties
Those chewy cookies you get from supermarkets
Quavers

nrpmum · 27/05/2019 06:09

I lived abroad for a few years, and marmite and brown sauce were the only foods I missed.

Moved back to the UK and miss certain foods from the countries I lived in.

HappyEverIftar · 27/05/2019 07:15

Not forced, but I do live outside of the UK, where I am in the ME is difficult to get hold of UK products. I miss all the food options and when I go back, I happily spend 3 hours in Tesco looking at everything (sad I know) DH has to prepare me if we need to run and get bread: "now we're only going in for some bread Happy, we haven't got time to linger" Grin spoilsport.

Like PPs, all the lovely UK crisps, including squares, French fries and monster munch
Greggs sausage rolls
Anything with pork in really
Jelly sweets (only veg options here and veggie Colin the caterpillars aren't nice imo)
Choc buttons
Any posh chocolate
And things like: marmite, bisto, mint sauce, cheese, I bring back with me when back.

All pop here is sugary - no artificial sweeteners and I notice the difference going back, so end up buying fever tree which is expensive.

ScotsinOz · 27/05/2019 07:41

Moved to Australia and miss the food so much!

Me: Mother’s Pride Plain Bread, a proper chicken tikka masala, penguin bars, M&S sea salt and cracked black pepper crisps, Jaffa Cakes that don’t cost a dollar a biscuit, deep fried pizza (omg I want a half pizza supper now!), a proper Chinese chicken curry (Glasgow style), Polo Mints, Pot Noodles, Jammie Dodgers, PG Tips, tea made in a pot and not with a bag, Greggs crumpets (smeared in butter), proper baps, proper square sausage and potato scones.

Husband: Monster Munch, Quavers, Skips, Hula Hoops, Jamie Dodgers, Walkers crisps (especially Prawn Cocktail), square sausage, potato scones, decent black pudding.

Some of these you can get in Australia now, but are expensive and difficult to find. There are loads more we miss too. When people ask me what I miss about Scotland I always answer “The Food”.

ScotsinOz · 27/05/2019 07:43

Forgot to mention Red Leicester Cheese!

OpportunityKnocks · 27/05/2019 07:50

Proper sausages

The huge choice of great chocolate bars in every corner shop

Chocolate hobnobs

SunshineSpring · 27/05/2019 07:52

Iftar where are you? Marmite, bisto, mint sauce all found in KSA (Lulus for bisto and mi t sauce, marmite in most of the big chains). British cheese is a bit hit and miss, but I can usually locate.

Outtheforest · 27/05/2019 07:54

I mainly miss Puddings jam rolly poly, chocolate sponge, sticky toffee etc. If I want a decent cake or pudding I have to make it from scratch and I'm a hopeless cook.
I also miss squash that isnt just sugar flavoured, cheap crisps eg. Onion rings and decent cheese that doesn't cost me a weeks budget.

Sleepybumble · 27/05/2019 07:56

Not a snack but Shreddies with milk. It never tastes the same anywhere outside the UK

Outtheforest · 27/05/2019 07:57

Oh not snacks but I also missed ready made food and McDonalds double cheese burgers, actually any cheese burger. I might have to make some for dinner now
