We're self catering in France. We'll have a car and therefore access to several supermarkets incl a Lidl. We've been before but don't usually put money aside and end up being careful (mostly eating in, my DH usually cooks, he enjoys it but it's a bit same shit, different place especially for him) and putting some on the credit card. This year we can plan and save. So within reason, what would you budget for 2 weeks in the sun. Our family is 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 7yo and 1 toddler.
FWIW next year I'd like to go all in for a change.

About £1k a week for food and drinks

Mummyshark2019 · 26/05/2019 16:28

About £3k for two weeks

CaptainMarvellous · 26/05/2019 16:28

£140 ish a day? Seems a lot but I guess eating out in the evening could easily be £80/£100 if restaurants are similarly priced to here. Having said that I do think they are a bit cheaper

When I go away I budget £50 per adult per day. I’d take about £3k for the two weeks

Ginfizplease · 26/05/2019 16:37

Woah, I'm surprised at this.

I would think about £200 per week if self-catering and wanting a few luxuries/snacks or lunches out. That's more than double the budget for home.

If eating out 5 nights out of the week I would budget for £600.

TwoBlueFish · 26/05/2019 16:39

We generally go self catering, usually eat out one meal per day. 2 adults & 2 teens and we spend less than £1k for a week in Spain.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 26/05/2019 16:40

We don't do pricey restaurants so £350 would be plenty for the family to eat and drink for the week. That's £50 per day.

InDubiousBattle · 26/05/2019 16:40

Between £2-3k to be comfortable I think. We went to a uk seaside town for a week last year with our two, then pre schoolers and budgeted £1k. We didn't actually spend it all but the weather was good so the kids were happy with beach days when we had budgeted to need to pay for tickets etc to events.

MsVestibule · 26/05/2019 16:42

Roughly £100 per day for our family, but that's 2 adults and 2 children. You have 3 adults and 2 children, really.
Icecreams - £15 per day
Lunch - £40 per day
Dinner - £70 per day
Day trips?

Of course you can do it cheaper than that, but just a pizza/pasta type meal, a drink and a pudding will cost you roughly £15 pp.

Girlicorne · 26/05/2019 16:44

When we are self catering we aim for £200 a day, 2A 2C as I don't cook on holiday!! I tend to book any days out etc beforehand not within our spending budget, I go with posters above who say 3k. That's to have a nice time and not worry about what you are spending it's probably doable on half that!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/05/2019 16:44

About 1,5k a week so that we can do lots and eat out. We don't cook though, not much of a holiday if you have to cook and clean up so we eat out.

Hollowvictory · 26/05/2019 16:46

£1k minimum

timeforgin1 · 26/05/2019 16:47

We're going to France for a week during the Summer holidays (2 adults and 2 children - 6 and 2). I'm aiming to save around £1200-£1300 ish but will hopefully won't need it all. Will eat in a few nights but that money is for all activities and not just food.

Fairylea · 26/05/2019 16:47

Surely this is just different for everyone. When we’ve been really broke we’ve done a week in a caravan at Haven (which was given to us as a holiday grant from a disabled children’s charity as ds has special needs) and we only spent what we would have spent at home on food! So about £80-100. We just had days on the beach and went on country walks etc. So it was very low spend (there’s me, dh, ds aged 6 and teenage dd).

This year we are in a better position so going somewhere quite different and have budgeted about £1k for the week, as we want to do lots of things as well.

I think it just comes down to what you can afford.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 16:48

Last year 2 weeks in Cyprus (breakfast included but we ate lunch & dinner out) 2 adults & one toddler I think we spent about £3k.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 26/05/2019 16:48

When me and dp go we say £150-£200 per day. An evening meal can easily be £100 with starters, main and drinks (we don’t do desert). The food throughout the day, bottles of water, pop etc, ice cream. I imagine an evening meal for 3 adults and 2 children could easily be £120 or more. Especially where your sides (fries, salad, veg, potato etc) are not included in the price of the main, that hiked up to cost a lot.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 16:51

On holiday I would have a few cocktails spaced over the day so that adds up. We might also do a couple of trips/activities.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 26/05/2019 16:51

So that’s £2400 for 2 of us (but we only ever go for a week because of work so £1200 or we go AI)

CaptainMarvellous · 26/05/2019 16:52

Thank you for the responses

We will have to have either lunch or dinner at the apartment I think. And plan for 40/50% of our main meals to be homemade. I'm going to up the budget from £1,500 to £2,000 based on reading this though.

And whomever said we are 3 adults, you are not wrong!

indubious I think you do need more to holiday in the UK, because as you say the weather isn't guaranteed

imsorryiasked · 26/05/2019 16:53

We go self catering in Greece so not sure how prices compare but we eat out every night and self cater for breakfast and lunch and allow £1000 for a fortnight.

JaceLancs · 26/05/2019 16:53

£50 a day per adult here so £1050 for a week

toycar · 26/05/2019 17:03

about 2k on a week in Majorca plus £200 for food and drinks on 4 days in a restaurant (£800 for meals out) and maybe £200 on a boat trip. the rest of the time we eat in the apartment having things like cheese on toast with breakfast cereal, crisps salad, fruits and snacks.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/05/2019 17:06

Just been to Spain for a week spent just under £1000.

4 adults.

Didn’t scrimp. Went to really nice places,

Spent the days in the pool and wandered out for an evening meal most of the time

purplelila2 · 26/05/2019 17:07

omg I'm really surprised at the amount of spending money people take!
