We're self catering in France. We'll have a car and therefore access to several supermarkets incl a Lidl. We've been before but don't usually put money aside and end up being careful (mostly eating in, my DH usually cooks, he enjoys it but it's a bit same shit, different place especially for him) and putting some on the credit card. This year we can plan and save. So within reason, what would you budget for 2 weeks in the sun. Our family is 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 7yo and 1 toddler.
FWIW next year I'd like to go all in for a change.

Whenever we used to self cater we had breakfast and lunch in our villa. So bought things like cheeses, cold meats breads and salads. Then evenings we would do a fix of eating out and bbqs at the villa. For 2 weeks I would budget £800 to cover all food and drinks both in the villa and out. Then maybe have a credit card in reserve.

In France 3 years ago we ate out every night (4 of us), and some lunchtimes. It cost us almost £1000! We thought we'd eat out as we spent so little on accommodation but it was still a surprise when we totted it all up.

Longlostperson · 26/05/2019 17:49

£3000??? Shock
Why would anyone spend so much for a week away?
I would say maximum £500-800 a week.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 17:55

@Longlostperson the thread is asking about a fortnight, not a week/

gingajewel · 26/05/2019 17:56

We go to haven for 7 nights and I take a £100 per day and there are 2adults, a nine year old and a three year old.
I planned to go all in someone where next year and am going to take about £500 with me (abroad) the kids won’t want much if drinks and ice cream is included and we will be fine eating at the hotel!

redspider1 · 26/05/2019 17:59

Between £50 and £100 per day. Some days are very cheap , others expensive so it evens out.

redspider1 · 26/05/2019 18:02

£3000? Wouldn't spend more than that on the holiday itself , let alone spending money unless it was the holiday of a lifetime! It's all about choice though. Personally, its a week or two away. I prefer to spend money on making my every day life better so on the house, garden and lifestyle because that can be enjoyed all year round.spend what you think is reasonable.Set a budget that you are willing to spend then take a credit card in case.

flirtygirl · 26/05/2019 18:03

I can't believe people spend these amounts, mind blown.

Hollowvictory · 26/05/2019 18:05

This is why all inclusive is such good value!

Yogagirl123 · 26/05/2019 18:05

I agree purple, no way would we have that sort of budget!

S/c last year had breakfast and lunch in villa, meals out in the evening, 2 adults and 2 DS’ late teens spent £700. One week trip.

redspider1 · 26/05/2019 18:05

We actually enjoy cooking on holiday so it is not a chore. I love visiting the french or Spanish supermarkets. If in a villa, we will eat breakfast and lunch there or take lunch out with us then the evenings we alternate between a bbq or home prepared meal and a meal out.

ItWentInMyEye · 26/05/2019 18:07

We went to France self catering for 2 weeks last year and spent about £1k in total including food, booze, petrol, drinks in bars and ate at a restaurant once.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 26/05/2019 18:09

We don't cook on holiday, maybe have some breakfast items if we have a fridge, but just pastries, fruit etc. We usually take £150-£200 a day for two adults, and that's with car hire already paid for, I'd expect to spend more than that with DS. However we're not pay on the beach tote people so we're out every day and again in the evenings. It depends what kind of holiday you want.

BanginChoons · 26/05/2019 18:41

I'm going to Turkey self catering with a teen and two younger children. I'm planning on taking £1000 with me for 10 days. I'll do a supermarket trip for drinks, bottled water, fruit etc. We will eat brunch and dinner out. I'm hoping it will stretch to a few day trips too.

StabbyBitch · 26/05/2019 18:59

Never been abroad but last year I took £1400 to the isle of Wight for 2 adults, 2 10year olds, 9 year old & 3 year old for 5 nights and spent the lot. That was self catering but mainly eating out.

This year we're going half board so breakfast & dinner included & am taking £880 for 7 nights.

mamaduckbone · 26/05/2019 19:07

Absolutely nowhere near what some people are suggesting! But then, we enjoy cooking -buying food from local markets etc. We were in France for 10 days last summer and only ate out 2 or 3 times, but bought amazing moules and other seafood, cheap but delicious wine and bread, cheese, pastries etc...it didn't feel like cooking at home but kept costs down.

Gth1234 · 26/05/2019 19:12

When we self cater in France we take about £500 cash, and put the rest on credit cards.

Credit cards include peage fees, petrol, some shopping etc with an aim of ensuring the money lasts. 3 probably eat out 2 or 3 times over the fortnight.

We wouldn't spend over £1000 for two weeks.

If you self cater it's hard to spend so much. I don't think food is much dearer in France now, and alcohol is a lot cheaper.
