To think Vossi Bop is misogynistic rubbish?

Just that really. Everytime it comes on the radio I'm a bit annoyed that with all the positivity of the Me Too! movement etc. this made number one.

@astrasky I'm not particularly focusing on the facial although I do think this lyric is a bit much on the radio. What consenting adults enjoy in a relationship is not the issue at all.
I just think the general tone towards women is not acceptable.

@bumsnet69 totally agree. He is someone a lot of young men look up to and IMO has a responsibility to be a positive role model.

@astrasky I should probably correct to remove the "in a relationship". I really have no problem or interest in what anyone enjoys sexually.

@Riojaandchoc

Okay, but what makes it misogynistic as opposed to poor taste, or just a sexual tone?

sheshootssheimplores · 26/05/2019 12:10

I actually hate the facial line, though I do like the song as a whole. Every time he sings it I too go 🥴

Riojaandchoc · 26/05/2019 12:13

@astrasky
"I could probably take your chick, but I just wouldn't 'cause she's jarrin', oh
......
Yeah, I used to hit it but you're stuck with her
Man, I wouldn't even try my luck with her"

I'm sure there are far, far worse songs out there and far more offensive lyrics but to me this is still misogynistic in tone.

I'm very old because I didn't understand any of the lyrics, so got bored and didn't read the second verse

sincethereis · 26/05/2019 12:17

Nothing about it is misogynistic.

Can I ask how old you are ? Grin

Moralitym1n1 · 26/05/2019 12:18

You know my parents?

I once volunteered at a community/family event where the band covered blurred lines; I stood there almost laughing with black humour at how inappropriate it was when they were singing "I know you want it", "you the hottest bitch in this place" etc.

There is still something wrong with our society that that happens.

Vulpine · 26/05/2019 12:23

Well his girlfriend does have lovely skin!

NotACleverName · 26/05/2019 12:23

It's not the job of celebrities to act as role models to your kids.

Vulpine · 26/05/2019 12:25

I love blurrred lines and do not have a problem with it as feel it is tongue in cheek. Stormzy singing about coming in people's faces is on a whole different level

ElBandito · 26/05/2019 12:31

It’s disrespectful because he perceives it to be disrespectful in the song. He isn’t doing this to another man’s girlfriend to show what a good guy he is.

TheAngryLlama · 26/05/2019 12:32

Re the role model point - with his support for Corbyn, setting up scholarships etc ( and I support the latter) he clearly thinks of himself as someone whose opinions and behaviour should be attended to and respected. So I think the points a good one.
The overarching point is it’s a shit record and I think he’s running out of road, hence resorting to this rather tired misogyny.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 26/05/2019 12:33

I think it's the implication that a woman is another man's property to 'steal' sexually degrade and then slag off, to get at another man.

MephistophelesApprentice · 26/05/2019 12:44

I always thought that Blurred Lines was a satirical critique of the patriarchal de-sexualisation of women and a call to throw off the shackles of the vitgin/whore complex.

derxa · 26/05/2019 12:56

I love him and his wee song. I'm 59

astrasky · 26/05/2019 12:59

  • Song about disrespecting someone's right to say no to sexual advances - LOVE IT!
  • Song about a facial, in which the woman consents - DISRESPECTFUL

I think coercing someone to have sex is more disrespectful than cumming on someone's face who is a willing participant.

Also, the video to blurred lines is much more controversial than Stormzy's - there's no disrespect in his video at all.

Also, how is Stormzy's not tongue in cheek?

Hmm
AbsentmindedWoman · 26/05/2019 13:03

I've just googled Stormzy's age and he's 25! Shock

He looks about 40 wtf!

SeaWitchly · 26/05/2019 13:08

I quite liked it... Blush

Firstworddinosaur · 26/05/2019 13:33

I would say music is far more likely to have violent or racist lyrics now than in the 90's. Or it could just be that there is less censorship on the radio.

I revisited Snoop Dogg's 90's albums recently. OMG I can't believe I never questioned the lyrics Blush

SomethingOnce · 26/05/2019 13:56

Yep.

It’s nothing to do with that particular act in and of itself and everything to do with approving the nasty misogynistic attitudes of some young men.

Stormzy should know better.

PolinaPansy · 26/05/2019 19:35

I have no problem with the implication of "stealing" or "belonging" to a man. My male partner is also MINE, part of MY family, MY boyfriend, if another woman is trying it with him then she is trying to steal what is mine.

Also are men never allowed to slag off a woman? I've slept with people I slag off now.

sincethereis · 26/05/2019 21:57

@PolinaPansy

😂😂 That’s the silliest thing I’ve read in a while.

My male partner is also MINE

No he isn’t. He isn’t your property. He chooses to be with you and can decide at some point , if he wishes, to no longer be yours.

“She is trying to steal what is mine”

Again, he’s not your purse or shoe. You don’t own anyone 🤣😂
