To think Vossi Bop is misogynistic rubbish?

Just that really. Everytime it comes on the radio I'm a bit annoyed that with all the positivity of the Me Too! movement etc. this made number one.

Bwhahah at middle aged women clutching their pearls at songs aimed at 15 year old boys who like to pretend they’re ‘roadmans’.

I don’t even know what the song’s about but I’m sure it’s just a load of roadman BS that I’m uninterested in but I like the tune. I was probably listening to worse at 15. I used to have to turn the music down in my room so my parents wouldn’t hear.

Vulpine · 26/05/2019 08:13

Just read the lyrics. Now I can't get the image of stormzy spunking on his girlfriends face, the beautiful tv presenter Maya jama. She must feel very proud of him Hmm

Gingernaut · 26/05/2019 08:18
it's (c)rap.

I'm not a fan. YANBU

Deathgrip · 26/05/2019 08:34

My thoughts exactly. This is what young women are supposed to tolerate these days.

CodenameVillanelle · 26/05/2019 08:41

That line is horrible and ruins the song but I don't think the whole song is misogynistic

TheAngryLlama · 26/05/2019 08:43

And right on cue, the tired old pearl clutching stereotype is wheeled out again.
Not surprised you rate stormzy. You’re both tedious and predictable.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/05/2019 08:47

Vossi bop is a dance. I don’t dislike stormzy I think this song is shite.

The music my school friends used to listen to was so awful lyrically, anyone remember what would you do by City High?!?? That was huge when I was at school, I never realised how dark it was until more recently.
I liked the manic street preachers.... not much misogyny from the wire and the gang thankfully.

Riojaandchoc · 26/05/2019 11:07

I actually forgot about Eminem!
I was also more of a Brit Pop/indie type girl and apart from a few drug references there wasn't much harm.
What would you do is dark but isn't it supposed to be about picking yourself up and making a better life?

"Hilarious. So as long as misogyny is well established in pop, it's OK? Brilliant.

I have to turn it off, it makes me so cross."

Exactly this!

There were plenty of other misogynistic rappers in the nineties, however that's not the point. Just stop listening to shit radio and you won't hear this nonsense, I never have.

Buster72 · 26/05/2019 11:27

Sexist misogynistic lyrics have always existed.
Perhaps someone should try writing a catchy ditty about Me Too....see if it sells.

PolinaPansy · 26/05/2019 11:28

I think Blurred Lines was more misogynistic tbh. Finishing with a facial could be consensual, not sure the whole concept of "blurred lines" can ever be OK.

kenandbarbie · 26/05/2019 11:30

I can't really understand most of it!

I don't mind too much about the facial bit, songs always have stuff about sex in, not that different to talking about blowjobs or whatever.

Is that the only misogynist bit? I've actually watched it but I don't understand most of it.

I like the kids dancing though, and London looks cool.

kenandbarbie · 26/05/2019 11:32

Also what does the actual lyric vossi bop mean?

Sparklesocks · 26/05/2019 11:32

I feel like the era was gangsta rap and Eminem was immeasurably worse than this.

I like Stormzy, he has been very open and vocal on MH issues, and his book imprint champions young writers.

astrasky · 26/05/2019 11:33

Some women consent to and shockingly enjoy men finishing on their face.

Why shame his girlfriend? Maybe she likes it? He also calls her a goddess in the song.

The song is literally about a dance. What's misogynistic about it?

Bumsnet69 · 26/05/2019 11:37

I think Stormzy has a reputation/represents himself as woke - politically, and speaking out about MH issues etc so it stinks a bit when he’s being misogynistic in his lyrics. I understand rap lyrics can be offensive but it’s the fact that he acts like he’s above that stuff.

Neckercheiftheif · 26/05/2019 11:42

What @astrasky said!

Riojaandchoc · 26/05/2019 11:46

Blurred Lines was banned from a lot of places for that very reason.

"My bruddas don't dab, we just Vossi bop (ay)
I tell your girl to link me at the coffee shop (ay)
Gettin' freaky in the sheets, we're takin' body shots (ay)
Then I finish with a facial just to top it off (ay)"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it he is talking about someone else's girlfriend (property) as a way of disrespecting the man.

It just feels like a very sad world when women are treated with such lack of respect. Paid less than male colleagues, subjected to verbal harassment in the street, Trump's vile comments about pussy grabbing.
It's not okay. Just because it's been that way for years doesn't make it right. I'd hope for better for my daughters.

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 26/05/2019 11:48

Yeah he's definitely not talking about his own girlfriend, he's being a pig about someone else's girlfriend.

astrasky · 26/05/2019 11:51

You seem to be focusing on the facial that he talks about... But I'm asking why is a facial disrespectful if the woman consents to it?

And what is misogynistic about it?

Do I have no respect for myself if I enjoy them?

Nyctophilia · 26/05/2019 11:53

How about these lyrics?
way to make you stay and keep me company
It's time to get my way 'cause night time is the right time
And when I'm feeling fine I like my action guaranteed

All right tonight's the night
I can't wait any longer
I'm turning out the light and locking up that door
You might put up a fight
But you'll be crying out for more
When you'll be getting what you really came here looking for

ah ha

Nyctophilia · 26/05/2019 11:54

From the lovely Shakin Stevens, sounds a bit like potential rape

recrudescence · 26/05/2019 11:57

I think it’s admirable that Mr Stormzy is advocating a sensible skincare regime.

Riojaandchoc · 26/05/2019 12:00

@Nyctophilia that's awful.
