Aibu to not be able to deal with dog poo?

Recently we've been walking our neighbour's dog to help her out. It's a big dog and the amount of poo that comes out of her is quite astonishing. Being a good citizen I always pick it up but even though I use 2 bags each time it still overspills and I am wretching. Sorry if tmi, don't want to stop walking her as she's adorable but I dread this happening! Any tips anyone? Thanks

Bigger bags! The more expensive ones tend to be bigger and often scented 😊

StoorieHoose · 25/05/2019 20:54

How big is the dog?? My collie can do up to 3 poos a day but each one is about palm sized

DrReed · 25/05/2019 20:57

How does it over spill? My friend who has a big dog has been known to use 2 hands to scoop but it doesn’t overspill from the bag.

IDontDrinkTea · 25/05/2019 20:58

Use scented nappy bags instead. Cheaper and bigger Smile

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2019 20:59

I dog sat once. Never ever again.

Went for a walk in the dark, in the rain. Juggling dog lead, torch, umbrella, poo bags. I was nearly throwing up even though I used 3 poo bags and put my hand in them. Just the feel of the warm poo. Bleurgh.

I have a cat and clean her tray no problem but the poo is buried and I use a scoop, and smaller poo!

Wait until your hand goes straight through an unnoticed hole in the bottom when it's dark 💩

Frannibananni · 25/05/2019 21:01

🙁 if you really can't deal with the poo you will have to stop walking the dog.

Gintonic · 25/05/2019 21:01

Tabby. I used to think I wanted a dog, until I saw my friend trying to clear up his dog's diarrhea from the pavement Envy

Gintonic · 25/05/2019 21:01
  • not tabby, Yanbu!
adaline · 25/05/2019 21:04

What breed is she?

motherheroic · 25/05/2019 21:05

How many times is the dog walked? If my dog doesn't have a poo in the morning he will do a massive one (plus several more) in the evening to make up for it.

Nothing you can do but get bigger bags and double/triple them up I'm afraid.

BertieBotts · 25/05/2019 21:11

This is actually what puts me off getting a dog. I can deal with cat trays as you don't have to touch the actual poo. Is there a kind of scoop thing on a stick you can get for dog poo?? That's what I hope for (DH wants to eventually get a dog).

Cryalot2 · 25/05/2019 21:12

What breed is it?
Try nappy sacks, but if it is making you ill stop.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2019 21:13

But even if there was a scoop you then have to carry the poo around until you get to a bin. Sad And you would also have a pooey scoop to deal with.

Biancadelrioisback · 25/05/2019 21:19

Poop scoop. I carry it around in a poop bag with the handle sticking out

SomewhereInbetween1 · 25/05/2019 21:20

Honestly as an owner, picking up poo phases you less and less over time. I don't even think about it now, just bag it up and carry on.

Punxsutawney · 25/05/2019 22:08

My Ds was on year 10 work experience last week at a local nature reserve. One of the jobs he was given on a warm sunny afternoon was to accompany one of the rangers when they took the van to empty all the dog poo bins. They had to empty them all out it onto the back of a van and then take it to a council tip and throw it all in a skip. He said it was the worst thing he has ever smelt. He has possible ASD and sensory issues so not sure how he coped, bad hay fever helped I think. He has told me he will never own a dog after that experience! To be honest his description of the afternoon had me feeling a little queasy.

Funkyslippers · 25/05/2019 22:21

She's a border collie and adorable so I will never stop walking her. Bigger bags and more of them seem to be the way to go

Don't use nappy sacks - they are much thinner IME.

Have you considered wearing rubber or latex glove for extra protection? Or get a freeze spray so the poo is hard.

FadedRed · 25/05/2019 22:51

Larger bags, a piece of cardboard (cut up old food and packaging boxes) to pick up the poo and manoeuvre into the bags, Vicks vapour rub up your nostrils or sucking an extra strong mint will help mask the smell.

UrsulaPandress · 25/05/2019 22:55

A collie's poo can't be that big. I saw one in the woods today and it was ginormous. I am still wondering about the size of dog from which it emanated.

Stefoscope · 25/05/2019 22:55

The Morrisons Nutmeg nappy sacks make good poo bags, they're large and the plastic is pretty thick.

MrsTommyBanks · 25/05/2019 22:59

I had this issue walking my exs Boxer.
I got sandwich bags. Put both hands inside in a scooping motion. Then sort of flipped the bag inside out.

I also carried wet wipes and hand antibac gel.
Enjoy your walks. The shite is a small price to pay imo.

MrsTommyBanks · 25/05/2019 23:03

That said, I have recently adopted a Shih Tzu cross. Who I adore completely.
Sometimes I absolutely heave bagging up some of her poos. I can gag half way round the park tbh.
Tiny but fucking deadly stench wise.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 25/05/2019 23:08

Good quality poo bags are key - I like the Beco ones, and if you're so inclined they do scented ones too. I find that over time you tend to find that it bothers you less and less.

However, do you know what brand the dog is fed? Usually dogs producing lots of big, soft poos are being fed low quality food, much of which isn't digested and comes out of the other end. Better quality foods invariably results in fewer, firmer, smaller poos. www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk is an excellent resource for dog owners.
