To think more people go to the cinema than people realise?

I've been going to the cinema a lot and recently any time ive spoken to someone about it, they have seen it and other films. I dont get out much and so see online people talk about it being expensive and often the cinema doesn't look busy.

Looking online last year was the biggest box office year in decades i the country, but i never see people talk about it.

Youve convinced me

Pinkvoid · 24/05/2019 11:56

Going to the cinema is everyone’s ‘dirty little secret’? Wow, what a boring nation we are.

TwistedBiscuit · 24/05/2019 11:57

😂

imnottoofussed · 24/05/2019 11:59

Our newish local cinema is pretty much full for every weekend showing and gets booked up, you can't just turn up of a weekend and expect to see a film.

The old cinema however 10 minutes in the opposite direction barely has 5 people in it, but it is a dump so thats probably why. I've no idea how it still keeps going, but its been there 40 years and I think it still has the same seats from day 1!

Paddy Grin

I mean, ok... and?

I never go to the cinema, secret or otherwise.

Coquillage · 24/05/2019 12:03

People really need to up their filth game if going to the cinema is their dirtiest secret.

Coquillage · 24/05/2019 12:04

OP, going to the cinema is hardly a niche pastime. There's a reason actors like Tom Cruise are paid $50m per film.

PuppyMonkey · 24/05/2019 12:04

I went to see the detective Picachu film the other day and that’s definitely my dirtiest secret ever. Grin

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 24/05/2019 12:10

Wow sorry for making a small joke, but i still stand by my OP that im surprised that so many seem to go when i just see moaning online. I dunno why im getting a snappy response. if people think im trying to sneakily advertise the cinema im not you could AS my name and since ive been going ive made a few posts about how i suffer badly with MH issues and its really helped me, i think i posted about it on one about watching i think it was 50 films in a year or something but last summer i made quite a few posts in the movies topic.

Can see the threads not really wanted so i guess ill just fuck off.

Don’t get upset, OP. I think you’re right, people do see it as an expensive night out. We’re among the many people who have Cineworld cards so we can see as many films as we like for £18 a month. We’re there every week, sometimes twice.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 24/05/2019 12:15

Coquillage like i said in my OP though i dont really go out too much ( the cinema has actually helped me get out more) literally was only for medical appointments, so i was going months just in my home. i have generally been isolated so havent really spoke a lot to people in real life so its only been online and its always people complaining its expensive so cant go and a lot of the time i dont see a lot of people at the cinema, so when i actually have spoken to people yes it was weird to me that everyone had seen the films.

Elphame · 24/05/2019 12:16

Last time I went it cost nearly £25 for the 2 of us and there were 6 people in the auditorium.

OkMaybeNot · 24/05/2019 12:16

Everyone I know goes fairly regularly, especially if they have kids or are Marvel fans Smile

I don't think cinemas are getting many bums on seats for anything other than really big films and kids' films though. People are far less likely to go see a low-key chick flick/romcom nowadays and will wait for the download/dvd.

Peachesandcream14 · 24/05/2019 12:16

I took DD to see the peppa pig film recently, that was the first time I've been to the cinema in almost a decade, it was nearly £30 for two adults and a toddler. I'm in my mid twenties and don't know anyone who goes to the cinema regularly, we have NetfliX.

KatherineJaneway · 24/05/2019 12:18

I think it is something that people see as routine so might not tell others unless it was a massive film like the latest Avengers.

Coquillage · 24/05/2019 12:18

I think there have been loads of films recently Avengers type things, that so many people seem to be really into. Every other film is a superhero type film as it obviously gets the £££££ rolling in.

Theromanempire · 24/05/2019 12:19

OP, I get you and totally understand where you are coming from. For us a trip to the cinema is generally in the £50 a time so it is a 'once a month' treat for the DC. However, as children's films usually come out 2 or 3 at a time (particularly round the holidays), I feel awful having to ask my DC to choose which one they want to see (and it gets even more fun when they disagree!!)

And yes, their friends seem to be at the cinema on a much more frequent basis and see everything but I just find it so expensive!

swimmerforlife · 24/05/2019 12:19

I didn't go for years until I had kids, even before online streaming, Netflix etc. I use to wait for the DVD to be released Grin

Expensive. Full of people loudly eating popcorn, crisps.

Even now I try and get DH to go to the movies with the kids.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 24/05/2019 12:21

Going to the cinema is my dirty little secret. That’s why I told everyone I went dogging last Saturday night.

Coquillage · 24/05/2019 12:21

My mother is planning to make her once a decade trip to the cinema to see the Downton Abbey film Grin

Theromanempire · 24/05/2019 12:21

Also, are you sure they are going to the cinema to see these films? They are easily accessible online within days of their release even if you do have to sometimes put up with Chinese subtitles so I suspect a lot of people are watching it in the comfort of their own home for free.

bigKiteFlying · 24/05/2019 12:21

Looking online last year was the biggest box office year in decades i the country, but i never see people talk about it.

There were several news reports on it when that was realeased.

My IL used to do lots of wondering round shops and a meal out - they do less and less of that - they'll do an attraction then meal or cinerma then meal. It's sort of replaced high street shopping for them.

I went about twice as a child - went more as a university student - our kids don't go every week or every month but they go several times a year.

IVflytrap · 24/05/2019 12:24

I think more people are going to the cinema now than a couple of years ago, but in the last year or so where I live, the 3 major chains were all selling their tickets for £5, which definitely encouraged me to go more often, and probably others as well.
