To think more people go to the cinema than people realise?

I've been going to the cinema a lot and recently any time ive spoken to someone about it, they have seen it and other films. I dont get out much and so see online people talk about it being expensive and often the cinema doesn't look busy.

Looking online last year was the biggest box office year in decades i the country, but i never see people talk about it.

You have to eat in the cinema, it’s part of the ritual Grin when I go on my own I get a coffee and a strop waffle and I bloody enjoy it!

summerflower2 · 24/05/2019 13:00

The majority film watcher might be teenagers and young adults.

It is quite expensive.£50 for a family of 4. We don't go that often for the whole family. It is normally our children go together, I will go shopping while they stay in the cinema. They have watched all the Harry Potter, Star Wars and Marvel superheros, and will buy DVD afterwards.

We used to go to the Odeon kids movie, £5 for a whole family, however, our children have moved out of Kids movie, don't want to go anymore.

CremeEgg2019 · 24/05/2019 13:03

We get the 2 for £7 film at Odeon Cinemas (not the Central London ones though). Since this offer, I take the kids quite regularly (only 1 child at time though - the cost shoots right up if you are buying a full price ticket - £15 a head).

Before that, it was £50 for a family of 4. No way!

summerflower2 · 24/05/2019 13:03

I do feel there are less people in cinema than 10 years ago, the local Odeon are empty most of the time. The new luxury cinema is doing better but with only a few screens.

errorofjudgement · 24/05/2019 13:05

I really like the “Event” screenings, it means we get to see west end theatre in seats that are way more comfortable and only a 10 minute drive home afterwards!

IamPickleRick · 24/05/2019 13:07

Yes, I saw A streetcar named desire in my cinema live and it was just brilliant. Better view than you’d have had in the theatre.

coffeehabit · 24/05/2019 13:10

DS 14 is too embarrassed to been seen with me at the cinema....

I go by myself or with a pal when they do the NT or RSC live screenings. 15 minute drive away, coffee and a chocolate bar. Three hours of watching amazing performances that I want to see. Love it. Such a brilliant idea.

Have seen Take That with friends and David Gilmour with DH. Not quite the same atmosphere as actually in the stadium live, but a close second and fab night nonetheless, and waaaay cheaper!

TheGoogleMum · 24/05/2019 13:17

My local cinema gets busy especially right after a big release! It's also not too expensive (empire cinema, Tuesdays are cheap!). It's hard to find time to go with a baby as need to either go separately from DH or arrange a babysitter but I probably average seeing a film every 3 months

pikapikachu · 24/05/2019 13:19

I think that a lot of people watch illegal streaming sites rather than the actual cinema.

I believe that certain companies offer 2 for 1 on tickets if you go on a Tuesday or Wednesday

feelingverylazytoday · 24/05/2019 13:30

I used to go with my kids to see Toy story and things like that. The last time I went for my own enjoyment was to see Independence day, 22 years ago.
People eating Mcdonalds and stuff like that has put me off the idea even more now.

clairemcnam · 24/05/2019 13:39

The cinemas I see thriving where I live are either cinemas that offer a special experience - luxury seats, bars, etc. Or ultra cheap ones frequented by students and saturday morning kids shows. Those in the middle struggle far more.

stayathomer · 24/05/2019 13:42

We go a few times a year and it's a huge thing but so expensive ( 6 of us).

bruffin · 24/05/2019 13:44

I dont necessarily agree, the people i know who use streaming also go to the cinema as well.
The live screening are great, i go to those and the theatre (actually go to the theatre more than i go to the cinema atm)

jay55 · 24/05/2019 13:54

I regularly go as I've a Cineworld card, often there are less than a dozen people watching. But I avoid Saturday afternoons which seem to be much busier given the queue when I leave.

jay55 · 24/05/2019 13:55

Oh, my dad often goes to pensioner screenings and those tend to be very busy.

Eliza9919 · 24/05/2019 15:58

We have cheap cinemas near us, 2 are around 3.50 each and the vue is 4.99. There are also a couple of tiny independent ones.

We still only go a few times a year when there's particular films we want to see. it seems like whenever I check the listings its half term and there's only kids films on.

I want to see La Llorona though and the next Annabel film definitely, so we'll probably only go another 4 times this year maybe.

Homemadearmy · 24/05/2019 17:32

Our cinema is expensive, over £10 a ticket. I never go, I just can't justify the expense. the kids go occasionally, but it is a treat.

tor8181 · 24/05/2019 17:44

i go 3-4 times a week sometimes more

as a family though it can be up to 7-8 times a week as youngest and me go to one sitting then oldest and dad goes to another as because of disabilities youngest cant tolerate a full or half cinema and likes it just to be me and him and as they are both home ed we go in school times

its only in the next village so a 10 min drive

we have been 4 times since last friday, saw Pokémon last friday, aladdin on wednesday and secret life of pets 2 today and we have godzilla 2 booked for wednesday

its £2.50 each majority of the time we get the cinema to our elf or only a few there

we got to home bargains or poundstretchers,(which is on route) get our treats and just walk in as ive already booked online

he hates it if there is nothing out for him that week and really misses going

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 24/05/2019 18:09

Ds19 works in the cinema as manager when not in university, they will regularly have 100+ for 1 film. It’s rare they have low numbers.
As for us we go regularly🤷🏻‍♀️

Homemadearmy · 25/05/2019 00:03

Tor8181, I wish it was as cheap to go here, £2.50 is amazing.

NeverTwerkNaked · 25/05/2019 00:09

DH is a civil servant and gets half price tickets through some scheme. We go about twice a month as a couple and then probably take the children once every couple of months. I don't think we would go anywhere near as often if we had to pay full price though!

Gingerkittykat · 25/05/2019 00:26

A Sat night ticket for a major blockbuster can be almost £15 at my local Odeon so I rarely go.

I do sometimes go to a couple of small cinemas, both about half an hour drive but a good place to meet friends.

One has a silent film festival and I have been and seen other old B+W films, generally around £6 a ticket.

Another a community cinema, last film was q+A with the director and also around £6.

Bravelurker · 25/05/2019 01:55

I only ever seem to go to the cinema when I'm on dates, but when I was younger and had a lot of friends of similar age and no children, we used to go every weekend.
But back then, you had to wait 4 long years to see it on TV or maybe a bit sooner when it came out on video.
If there's a must see film, I'll wait for the release to be able to see it in the comfort of my own living room, with pause options for toilet /smoke breaks and full access to a kitchen for wine out of my fridge.

BetsyBigNose · 25/05/2019 02:27

We've got an ancient Odeon in our city and they have tickets for £6 each (anyone, any age, any seat) a couple of nights a week. I also get a Meerkat Movies code (I got this by applying for 1 day of travel insurance for a pretend day trip to a nearby city, which cost me about £2.50 and I was then entitled to the Meerkat benefits for 12 months!), so our family of 4 (me, DH and 2 DDs aged 10 and 11) can go and see a film for £12, once or twice a month.

We also never buy snacks or drinks at the cinema - I take a water bottle for each of us from home and let the kids have £1 each to spend on treats in the Tesco Express next door to the Odeon. It helps to keep the costs down! I've also managed to find a free car park a few minutes walk from the cinema, but now the evenings are lighter (and warmer), we'll probably start walking as it's less than 25 mins from home on foot.

I'll go and see a film with my Mum about once every 6 weeks too, so I'd estimate I see around 20-25 films at the cinema a year, which is more than I would have guessed at! I think for a family of 4, £14 isn't bad for a couple of hours of decent entertainment - it's certainly cheaper than a lot of other kid-friendly things like i-Bounce or Clip and Climb.
