True anecdote. Child in class wanted some water. Teacher directed child to drinking water tap in class and a clean cup. Child said that mum did not allow water from the tap; child only allowed to drink filtered water. For context, drinking water in our area is wonderful and the child has no medical issues.
Mind. blown.

I've never heard anything so daft in my life

I've generally heard at least 10 things dafter by lunchtime Grin

I drink tap water. I've always drunk tap water. My children drink tap water. I might buy bottles if they are on special for convenience when out and about but for the most part, it's tap water.

I am completely blown away that such a non event evokes such a ridiculous amount of derision. And has been shared by the (obviously shit) teacher. Mind.blown

Holstered water is definitely water that you keep in a holster and fire into your mouth out of a little water-pistol-type thing. I'm sure of that

Qweenbee · 23/05/2019 23:44

I drink lots of water from the tap but I must admit that sometimes it does taste horrid for some reason or other I can't fathom.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 23/05/2019 23:53

I now want a water gun holster. No more bottles for me. I will also be commuting to work by horse.

AlessandroVasectomi · 23/05/2019 23:58

Reminds me of the Farnborough air show when I stood behind Mummy and Daddy and two little girls with ear defenders. The parents looked the sort who wouldn’t let their children drink from taps and the defenders were kind of in keeping. If you’re concerned about your children’s hearing, then don’t take them to the air show maybe?

puppy23 · 24/05/2019 00:00

I wouldn't ever drink tap water growing up and still won't in my childhood home, I really do feel like it tastes off. But when I moved off to uni I couldn't be bothered lugging bottles back from the shops all the time so from then drank tap water. I do though have a couple of bottles on the go, one in the fridge cooling while I drink the other - I think the chilling makes it much more drinkable.

PickAChew · 24/05/2019 00:03

Unless your water is particularly hard or heavily chlorinated, all water filters introduce is a hell of a lot of bacteria, since the filters are up to a month old.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 24/05/2019 00:04

Or maybe take them but put ear defenders on them? Confused why on Earth shouldn’t they go to the air show? Why does it bother you that they wore ear defenders?

GabsAlot · 24/05/2019 00:04

Yeah coz we're all dead from having to drink tap water for 40 years

ffs

MitziK · 24/05/2019 00:50

Filtered water - well, going by what emerges from the taps at work, I'd say keep to filtered; saying that it is potable doesn't allow for interesting configurations where the 'cold' actually comes from the storage rather than the mains. Staff use filtered water rather than taps for that reason - and it tastes better/not of ancient plumbing.

But ear defenders being a reason for criticism? Fuck off. Plenty of children need them because, whilst they might like to see planes, the actual sound at an airshow is so loud, it can be scary. Attending a festival can be fun, but the music could be too loud for sensitive ears like those of a child (even before you take into account such extra sensitivity as comes with Autism) or an adult who is there for hours, such as when they're working the sound desk or on a stall near to the stage PA.

I wear filters every time I am in a noisy area and full over ear defenders in the noisiest situations. I've still ended up with Tinnitus, but it's a damn sight less than if I hadn't used them - and the places I work are a damn sight quieter than underneath a bunch of aeroplanes. Sudden very loud sounds can cause hearing damage, but less loud ones over a greater period of time do as well.

The sound pressure level of a single aeroplane taking off or overhead can be in excess of 130dB. This is 100 times louder (it's a logarhythmic scale) than the threshold for causing instantaneous hearing damage. And shows go on for hours, have music, explosions and loads of other loud sounds.

Having proper hearing protection from a young age is one of the most sensible things to happen in recent years.

GrandTheftWalrus · 24/05/2019 01:37

Move to Scotland. The water is much better here.

dreaming174 · 24/05/2019 02:04

A wealthy kid at my school is the same. Parents pack several new small plastic bottles of water everyday. We have requested a reusable drinking bottle but it's not good enough apparently :/

AwakeNow · 24/05/2019 05:48

My dil has water bottles that have filters, that's what your student needs.

Xmas2020 · 24/05/2019 06:27

@PussGirl i agree, my sister lives in Darlington and funny enough just thinking about it, her water tastes a lot nicer than ours Grin

tinytemper66 · 24/05/2019 06:32

Welsh water is delicious 💧💧💧

captainpantbeard · 24/05/2019 07:11

Another one for Welsh water!

Dana28 · 24/05/2019 07:19

I think most primary classrooms have a tap for painting lessons etc

derxa · 24/05/2019 07:30

Some of us have more sensitive tastebuds perhaps? Grin So mumsnet.

derxa · 24/05/2019 07:36

Growing up we had our own water source. Our farm was on a hill and we had a water pump. The tank occasionally had a dead rat in it. We were never ill.

Must tell DC that we can’t go to the Grand Prix in July because wearing ear defenders makes us look over-precious or something. And that we should not have taken them to Duxford, however much they enjoyed it.

PositiveVibez · 24/05/2019 07:56

We had a 9YO vegetarian come for dinner. When DH served himself a steak he said
"Oh can I have that, I'm not vegetarian but we say we are as we only eat the better cuts of meat"

A 9yo said that. Yeah okay 🙄. Pics or it never happened.

Stifledlife · 24/05/2019 08:04

Oh yeah.. and if the sun is too bright, don't put sunglasses on because someone may think you are being precious.

Far better to not go outside.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 24/05/2019 08:11

Really, the teacher's only option was to ring the parent and tell her to bring in some acceptable water sharpish ;)

lorribell · 24/05/2019 08:19

We only drink bottled water at home but if we are out then we will drink whatever is on offer so we aren't weird about it and dc is unaware because they just ask for a drink of water and then they get a cup. They drink tap water at nursery
