To be so irritated by this common spelling mistake

I’ve noticed about five different people in the last few days saying ‘rest bite’ when they mean respite.

It’s making my fucking teeth itch!

But I have a dear friend that says it and she's national level manager for a large company so she's intelligent.

DH is intelligent enough to be a surgeon and he says it too.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 26/05/2019 11:06

BenWillbonds, but it IS ignorance, sorry. 'Brought' is the past tense of 'bring' and 'bought' is the past tense of 'buy.' To muddle them up shows a lack of understanding of this grammatical fact, whether you live in Bedfordshire or anywhere else.

MrsLinManuelMiranda
I love that!

riotlady · 26/05/2019 11:10

The one that irrationally annoys me is when people mix up weary (tired) and wary (cautious).

Logically I know it doesn’t matter because I understand what they mean, but it still bugs me!

Probably a mixture of both. "I done" is common where I live now, and used by friends with otherwise impeccable grammar. It's not the norm where I'm from so it grates hugely for me, but if you've grown up heating it more often than "I did" then of course it doesn't sound wrong. I'm guessing a lot of people here who say "I done" in casual conversation would write "I did" in a formal setting. So a mix - definitely incorrect, but used due to local custom.

Teacher22 · 26/05/2019 11:18

Disinterested instead of uninterested. I know it is a bit arcane but, still, it loses a useful alternative for objective or impartial.

Language should be more like a scalpel than a bludgeon, surely?

Riojaandchoc · 26/05/2019 11:23

"We had a lovely time on are holiday"

OUR!

This is always on Facebook.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 26/05/2019 11:27

Perhaps you should look at culling your friends list! Grin

haverhill · 26/05/2019 11:29

I work at a private school and I’d say most of the kids write are when they mean our. Multiple corrections seem to make little difference.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/05/2019 11:31

Another I've just seen again - 'winging' instead of 'whingeing'.

MumW · 26/05/2019 11:38

The other one that makes me seethe is the creep of American spelling.

crabb · 26/05/2019 11:39

May I put in a plea to resurrect the dying verb “to lend”? Around here ( I’m in Australia) it’s all but disappeared. It’s all “the bank loaned us the money” and “he loaned me the book”. Loan is a perfectly good noun, why verbify it?! Poor lend, abandoned, unwanted Grin ( I think the dictionary doesn’t back me up on this one, but it annoys the heck out of me).

littlemeitslyn · 26/05/2019 12:01

Am more irritated by the unnecessary swearing

What, on MN? If so, you should try out NetHuns instead.

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 26/05/2019 12:57

I went to a Catholic school , not in Ireland, but many of the nuns were Irish( and obviously Catholic). I was definitely taught 'aitch'.

ScreamingLadySutch · 26/05/2019 13:02

Your instead of you're. Much more annoying!

OhTheRoses · 26/05/2019 13:03

Well me myself finds the use of aks infuriating.

I find the use of ask so much better.

What is it with me myself?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/05/2019 13:29

'Kinda' is another, as in, 'I kinda wish...' etc.

It's a good job there isn't an emoticon for a good slap - I'm not sure I'd be able to resist it.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 13:47

Thanks daisypond for explaining that cowtailing should read curtailing.

daisypond · 26/05/2019 13:56

Not sure I was right, though. Someone else said it should be kowtowing and that could well be it. Can’t tell without context.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 14:00

I would have guessed it to mean being very close to have a pile of poo dumped on you.

EggysMom · 26/05/2019 15:16

Our son is "lack toast" intolerant. He gets very ratty if he doesn't get his slice of toast in the morning Grin

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 15:37

I'm not phased... no, I'm fazed.

pitterpatterbaby · 26/05/2019 15:45

I've been wandering....

Wait, what? Where've you been?

Oh you've been wondering HmmGrin

SilverySurfer · 26/05/2019 16:00

There also seems some confusion with the words lend and borrow which makes my toes curl. eg 'my friend borrowed me her dress' and there was another queue this morning on here instead of cue.

What I don't understand is that these and other horrors are discussed on here on a regular basis and if you were one of the perpetrators, wouldn't you read the thread and think 'oh I do that and it's obviously wrong, I must use the correct word in future' but they don't, they just carry on using queue, myself, could of, invite, ad infinitum. Grrrrr
