I’ve noticed about five different people in the last few days saying ‘rest bite’ when they mean respite.

It’s making my fucking teeth itch!

What is cowtailing?

SilverySurfer · 25/05/2019 12:50

legolimb
Cottongusset
I also had a note sent to me at the office asking that I "Fire a shot across his bowels".

Can you explain this one please? I am trying but can't quite get it.

It should be 'fire a shot across his bow', ie bow of a ship.

legolimb · 25/05/2019 13:02

Thank you silvery

That makes more sense.
It would also be less messy and painful.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 25/05/2019 13:06

My pet peeve in spoken English: sec-e-tary. It's sec-re-tary ffs. Newsreaders do it all the time...

Yabbers · 25/05/2019 13:24

The current trend for using 'of' instead of 'have'

Nothing current about it, I remember our class being schooled about it by a history teacher 30 years ago after having marked our first set of homework. I'm guessing he saw it a lot.

DCIRozHuntley · 25/05/2019 13:33

@choccyhobnob one of the first sentences my very proud DD wrote using her phonics knowledge was

The bote is thloating

Grin
daisypond · 25/05/2019 14:08

I think cowtailing is meant to be curtailing.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/05/2019 14:51

Off of.
I got off of the bus.

SilverySurfer · 25/05/2019 16:22

I thought cowtailing referred to kowtowing.

daisypond · 25/05/2019 17:24

silversurfer you could be right re cowtailing = kowtowing. I didn’t think of that.

Mylittlepea · 25/05/2019 17:34

Apologies if this has been covered already but I can’t be arsed to read through 11 pages.....

I was at a work presentation this week and some HR people kept saying “this is just a whistle top tour” of the new system

NO I WAS SCREAMING INSIDE - it’s “whistle STOP tour” 🙈

PastaPins · 25/05/2019 17:37

I detest when people say "I brought one of these at Tesco". No you didn't "brought," you BOUGHT!!!

keffie12 · 25/05/2019 17:40

Uh! Eh! Never seen that before and nor would I want too. I would have to correct them.

I have just tried it on my phone. Respite doesnt even give an option to spell it that way. Spellcheck it automatically, doesn't do it either.

I suppose every phone would be different. Thats the only way I can see it doing that so frequent.

To answer your question yes it would irritate me

DontTouchTheMoustache · 25/05/2019 17:48

Rediculous instead of ridiculous. See it in here all the time and it really bugs me.

Nameisthegame · 25/05/2019 17:49

Not sure if this one is already here but when people write aloud rather than allowed

Devilinatwinset · 25/05/2019 17:50

Could/would/should OF when it's 've.
That gives me the rage.

TwoleftUggs · 25/05/2019 17:59

I have an American friend who writes walla when she means voila.

manicmij · 25/05/2019 18:03

Lose and loose stlll loooses me! I keep getting the sound muddled when I think of choose eg you have to choose a meal, but with the 'other' word lose has has the long ooo sound. English is mad!

Tattygran14 · 25/05/2019 18:05

The trouble is the lack of decent education. No grammar is taught, spelling is lax, and the teachers themselves are ill-educated, so what do we expect. Nobody reads, the internet is unedited, really, anything goes. And I really HATE 'Road liable to flooding. No, it's either liable to flood, or prone to flooding. Why not just 'Road might flood '. Simples. Save metal and paint.

cricketmum84 · 25/05/2019 18:06

I saw a good one on fb recently

"Lone behold" 😂 also seen Chester draws before. I was in bits from laughing 😂

KinkyFink · 25/05/2019 18:15

People on YouTube say 'let me know your guys's thoughts'. WTAF.

Riv · 25/05/2019 18:19

I need to get a lifo .. I can cope with most of these (although they are very funny and would have earned me a ruler across my palm if I had used them at school)
I do get cross however when I see eg (for example) used instead of ie (that is to say). Pedantic? Me ? ! Never 🤣

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 25/05/2019 18:19

I have heard people mention an 'apoplectic' pregnancy !!!

TheAverageJuror · 25/05/2019 18:24
