To be so irritated by this common spelling mistake

I’ve noticed about five different people in the last few days saying ‘rest bite’ when they mean respite.

It’s making my fucking teeth itch!

Ah, am with you on that one!!

KittensinaBlender · 23/05/2019 00:45

It’s probably because they have never seen it written down and only heard it spoken.

Restbite and respite phonetically sound very similar if you under pronounce the “p” sound, which many people do. Its not a common word and certainly not within literature - I think this one is an understandable mistake.

Also having “rest” within a word that is essentially about giving someone a break from something has a logic to it. It’s wrong, obviously, but it kind of makes sense why people mishear it.

Calloway · 23/05/2019 00:47

I've never come across that one. There are some people I'd like to rest my bite into though.

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/05/2019 00:48

Pass time is doing the rounds on here - seen it a few times

wafflyversatile · 23/05/2019 00:52

Normally I would agree but then I remember this from a thread many years ago:

I didn't set out to give her a dummy but she was a very 'sucky' baby and this was the only way i could get restbite.

HmmGrin

wafflyversatile · 23/05/2019 00:54

My pet peeve at the moment is 'respond back' and 'return back' AngryAngry

CaptainCabinets · 23/05/2019 00:55

@KittensinaBlender (Envy not envy)

Most of the offenders have been nurses! It’s a fairly common word in healthcare Grin

Oh christ I see this EVERYWHERE all the time. Makes my teeth itch!

Throughabushbackwards · 23/05/2019 01:00

Almost as bad as my MIL telling everyone near and far that she's booked in for an 'anagram' so they can try to sort out her angina Grin

GlitterPixie · 23/05/2019 01:04

Do they look in their Chester Draws for their rest bite I wonder

chesterfuckingdraws · 23/05/2019 01:15

Chester draws gives me the rage Angry

I recently saw some "nester tables" for sale and could feel the same rage building

cantfindname · 23/05/2019 01:26

These defiantly give me the rage... (before anyone shouts, that was intentional)

As does the current pronunciation of perform by TV commentators.. FFS it is not prerform or prerformance.

Love the 'anagram'.

JAPAB · 23/05/2019 01:37

I used to see "loose" for "lose" all the time. Then it just sort of went away. Maybe this will too.

AhoyDelBoy · 23/05/2019 01:38

Rest bite Grin haha, oh dear!

The best one I’ve seen recently is a woman saying ‘by the waistline’ when she meant ‘by the wayside’ still makes me chuckle especially as she tries to come across holier than thou.

Zoflorabore · 23/05/2019 01:40

My all time annoying one is "there" instead of "their", drives me crazy!

Jimdandy · 23/05/2019 03:16

Loose instead of lose is everywhere and drive me mad!

ShanghaiDiva · 23/05/2019 03:24

I have not seen this one. Received an email this week - with regards to - no, no, no!

BelulahBlanca · 23/05/2019 03:46

I’ve been guilty of been doing this! Sorry, OP!

Mothership4two · 23/05/2019 04:02

New one on me. Are they vampires?

Trebla · 23/05/2019 04:38

He's rather than his.
Tender hooks
Restbite

AlexaAmbidextra · 23/05/2019 05:02

There’s a lot of pedalling rather than peddling going on at the moment.

Also, people keep using purposefully where they should be using purposely.

Mississippilessly · 23/05/2019 05:05

I think you're being abit unreasonable- alot of people don't know how to spell or mishear common words.

But I fear this will fall on death ears.

Ironfloor269 · 23/05/2019 05:09

's instead of the plural term, so '"learning journey's" instead of "learning journeys". In a bloody preschool, too. Surely, the teachers should know better?

NameChangedNoImagination · 23/05/2019 05:20

'Makes my teeth itch' is worse than rest bite imo

pippistrelle · 23/05/2019 05:38

I think the battle is well and truly lost, but I really don't like 'invite' used as a noun. Given the number of threads about wedding or party invitations, I'm trying to get over it.
