Difficult situation but I think most parents would send money if they believed their son or daughter could be in danger. I feel very sorry for them that this has ended up in court.

Yes, very sad. Having to deal with their son going over and getting involved in the first place is bad enough - this must be like twisting the knife. Yes, the wrong to ignore advice not to try to send any cash, but I do feel sorry for them.

Whatevermission · 22/05/2019 22:18

Mumsnet had no sympathy for Shamina Begun. I am surprised to read that there is sympathy for these 2 people who have been funding ISIS

hold on, let's see if we can work out why....

FannyFeatures · 22/05/2019 22:26

I sympathise with the parents just as I did with SB's, they did not ask to be involved with this and only hoped to help their child initially.

However, when it became evident what he had done they should have reported it and ceased contact with him. He should not be allowed to re-enter the UK.

You choose to associate with terrorists, you die with terrorists.

BrokenWing · 22/05/2019 22:30

I have no sympathy for their son and he'll pay the consequences. The parents should not have sent money, especially when warned not to, but I do have sympathy for parents in their situation.

Whatevermission · 22/05/2019 22:34

Hmmm....i heard alot of people blaming SB parents for radicalising her/not noticing she was being radicalised/not reporting suspicions

CarolinaChina · 22/05/2019 22:40

If your comment is aimed at anything I’ve written Whatevermission then I take exception. You have absolutely no idea about my views on Shamima Begum. Please try to be a bit more careful in future.

Treaclesweet · 22/05/2019 22:41

This.

nancy75 · 22/05/2019 22:42

Didn’t his friends warn his parents, tell them to hide his passport because he had been radicalised? Instead they paid for his flight to Jordan knowing that he would probably go on to Syria.
I have no sympathy for them at all, at very best they are bloody idiots & terrible parents.

Chloemol · 22/05/2019 22:42

I don’t feel sorry for them, they were warned what was happening and ignored it, they sent emails to him about what he was doing, the mother bought the plane ticket, and I think she knew, they absolutely should not have sent any money, he is a terrorist. I do feel sorry for the parents of the people who died in the Manchester arena and anywhere else across the word where innocent children were involved, due to people like their son

FannyFeatures · 22/05/2019 22:45

"I heard a lot of people".

So not everyone then? I'm not getting why it is suddenly a strange sexist/racist/xenophobic issue, which I assume is what you're implying, that a handful of people have commented otherwise.

Yes, a lot of people may have blamed her parents but there are also a lot of people who didn't.

nancy75 · 22/05/2019 22:48

A lot of people are blaming these parents & as we know from the news story they have actually been arrested for helping him, do not getting off lightly just because they are white. I don't recall Begums family being arrested & charged?

FannyFeatures · 22/05/2019 22:49

I read it as them not being made aware until after they had paid for the trip but upon re-reading I see that I may have gotten that wrong.

In that case, i don't have any sympathy for them. Apologies.

Whatevermission · 22/05/2019 23:01

Please try to be a bit more careful in future

Pfft! Who do you think you are exactly??!

Whatevermission · 22/05/2019 23:02

Yes fanny they sent money after they had been told. More than once I believe

nocoolnamesleft · 22/05/2019 23:12

I actually have less sympathy for these parents than I did for SB. They don't even have the excuse that they were minors who were groomed online by a cult.

tensmum1964 · 22/05/2019 23:13

Begums parents had no idea what she was up to and where she was going etc and they didn't pay for her flights. That is why they weren't arrested.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/05/2019 23:13

I do, ironically, have some sympathy for their son. Who was vulnerable and groomed online by a cult.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 22/05/2019 23:17

Whatevermission
Mumsnet is an Internet forum, it is made up of many users. It's not a person using thousands of nicknames. So Mumsnet doesn't have an opinion of its own. It's obvious what you're trying to imply. Why not just say it instead of hinting?
I have no sympathy for Shamina Begum or for these parents. I also have no sympathy for people who carry drugs into countries with extremely harsh laws about drug dealing.

nancy75 · 22/05/2019 23:26

I’m interested in how these people come to be groomed online, he must have shown some interest in the first place to bring him to the attention of the groomers. I don’t know about any of you but in my many years of using the internet I’ve never been approached by anyone trying to convince me to join a religious death cult.

VladmirsPoutine · 22/05/2019 23:28

Why the sympathy for them and not for Shamina Begum and her parents. Tis honestly a mystery.

JaniceBattersby · 22/05/2019 23:30

“Despite those concerns, they paid for Jack to fly to Jordan in May 2014, apparently for a study trip, the prosecution said.“

Any small shred of sympathy I had dissipated at this line. They’re a disgrace.

Lolly25 · 22/05/2019 23:39

But Shamina Begums father was heavily involved ed in anti west groups and took her from a young child to flag burning protests etc..... she is the product of his evil.

Genevieva · 22/05/2019 23:49

@Whatevermission it is perfectly possible to have sympathy for Shamima Begum's family and not have sympathy for her. Similarly, I do feel sympathy for these parents, but not their son. I also think they were woefully misguided in their actions, but are probably being punished more severely than necessary as an example, to discourage others considering funding terrorists in this way.

nancy75 · 22/05/2019 23:56

They have been terrible parents, they were told he was radicalised & paid for him to go, that’s not just misguided - have they raised such a spoilt brat that they couldn’t say no to him?
Imagine if you were told your child might seriously become a terrorist would you really pay for their flight out there?

Genevieva · 22/05/2019 23:56

@nancy75 I am no expert, but I suspect there are certain vulnerabilities. One probably involves feelings of isolation and the hunt for somewhere and something to belong to. Another probably involves a collective sense of belonging within a small group that is separate from those around them - the involvement is somehow clandestine, cool and enticing.
