What should I buy my daughter for her birthday with a £250 budget?

Hi, thought I would download Mumsnet as I think it may be a good idea for answers about things I need to know. Anyway I will carry on with what I want to say.

It is my daughters birthday soon, she will be 15 but I have no idea what to buy her.
I don't want to spend too much but want her to feel happy.
I have a budget of £250 but she is asking me for things such as an Apple Watch but they can't cost me around £300 which is over my budget.

Any suggestions on what I can buy for her?

Is this how much people spend these days Shock mine are/ were lucky to get £100.
Mine is 15 and asks for useless presents, I tell her to wait until she's earning then she can be as daft as she likes with her money Grin

herculepoirot2 · 22/05/2019 13:50

Ignore LiverpoolSupportingMummy. She’s just strung out because her team may have to wait thirty more years.

LoafofSellotape · 22/05/2019 13:50

I would give her the money.

I wouldn't buy a second hand apple watch from eBay but I have bought a refurbished Apple iMac and an iPad from the apple website, all come as new it's only the motherboard thingy I side which is used ,the bit you don't see. It comes as new all packaged with a guarantee. I don't know if that's an option?

Happyspud · 22/05/2019 13:51

A night away with you somewhere nice with dinner. Some previous time and memories with her mum.

Babymamamama · 22/05/2019 13:52

Give her the money and let her save up the rest to get what she actually wants....

jenny123dyke · 22/05/2019 13:53

Thank you I don't know why Liverpool was so rude

If she likes make up, how about starting with a Mac Make up lesson? £50.

And just be honest with her and tell her you can't afford the Apple watch.

arethereanyleftatall · 22/05/2019 13:53

It is completely obvious Liverpool was joking.
Many would say this is a very insensitive op on mumsnet since that amount of money is a 2 monthly food budget for many on here.

ilovesooty · 22/05/2019 13:54

If this is your budget you might as well just give her the money.

Calling her daughter a little slag? Not funny.

CrazyCatNerd · 22/05/2019 13:55

£200 is indeed my family food budget for over two months but that doesn't mean the OP can't post about it. What a strange thought.

I'd persuade her to consider a cheaper alternative smart watch. DS wanted a fitbit and I couldn't afford one. We looked together and found a great non-branded version for £25 that looks and does exactly the same.

arethereanyleftatall · 22/05/2019 13:56

Oh gosh, I just read Liverpool's second horrid post. Please ignore me sticking up for her previously!

Phew!

I'll take your word for it but she certainly wasn't very funny.

StCharlotte · 22/05/2019 13:59

X-post Smile

Better ban all holiday destination query posts then?

Music magpie is your friend. Have got a few things from there. They do refirbished iwatches and they have a 12 month warranty. They have been fantastic from my experience

HelpAFattieOutHere · 22/05/2019 14:07

Just because you can spend £250, it doesn't mean you have to. That's a lot of money for a birthday present!

If she has her heart set on an apple iwatch thingybob I'd probably get her something to open and agree to pay half of the watch cost if she saves the rest. That way if she really wants one, she'll save and appreciate the value of it (and probably look after it a lot better!)

Badtasteflump · 22/05/2019 14:08

Get her the apple watch she wants from Apple's website as 'certified refurbished'. If you google apple certified refurbished you will find them and they come in under your budget.

I've bought refurbs from them before and they are perfect condition, new packaging, new casing, batteries etc and full warranty.

TooDamnSarky · 22/05/2019 14:08

At that age I would have most liked the money to go on a shopping trip. If she is reasonably sensible with money then let her have the fun of spending it.

Hopeygoflightly · 22/05/2019 14:09

That’s a huge amount of money for a 15 year old. I’d get her some new trainers or a backpack or similar that she likes and put the change into. Savings acct. I have an Apple Watch btw and can tell you now they’re a waste of money!
Or can you put the money towards doing something nice together ? Or gig tix or a similar experience?

Yotam · 22/05/2019 14:10

At 15 I would talk to her and explain the budget and the options. It doesn’t really matter if other people think the budget is too high or that an Apple Watch is pointless for a 15 year old. It isn’t better to spend that amount on other consumables like make up and clothes shopping if what she wants is the watch. They are no more worthy as gifts and seem like just spending up to a budget.

So tell her you have budgeted a maximum of £250. This won’t buy they watch outright but could buy a secondhand one (if true) or she could have the money and with added birthday money from family have the watch, but there will be no other gifts. Or she could suggest something else. Don’t waste money on something she may not want when you are spending so much money.

JenMumma · 22/05/2019 14:17

Maybe an eBay or apple refurbished voucher and she can add some of her other gift money ? Maybe ask her what SHE'D prefer ? She sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders and fabulous taste so just involve her and ask her, so she knows her options 🙂🙂 xx
