Is this garden too much for me?

allworkandnopay · 22/05/2019 10:34

I've found my dream home but it has a rather large walled garden. Being a complete townie I've never done any gardening in my life so my OH thinks it will be too much for me . All I can see is lawn to be trimmed and bushes to be cut but am I missing something? I really want to go and view the house but my husband is refusing even though he loves it too as he thinks it will all end up on his chore list!!
Please tell me if I'm being too unrealistic?

Wow you get a lot for your money! I'm from the SE so used to shoeboxes for ££££. It's lovely, really beautiful. Go for it and pay someone to come and cut the grass.

Pinotjo · 22/05/2019 11:24

It's already maintained, you just need to keep on top of it, you could always get an odd job man to help, cheaper than a gardener. I love my garden now, didn't have a clue before I moved in, now I'm getting quite good at gardening

troppibambini · 22/05/2019 11:25

Get a gardener to keep on top of the grass and hedges we pay £30 every two weeks and have a big garden with more to do. He comes and keeps on top of everything with his team it takes them and hour and a bit and garden always looks good.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 22/05/2019 11:26

OH thinks it will be too much for me

Maybe he could help?

Looks lovely.

TeacupDrama · 22/05/2019 11:27

you do need a ride on mower or a petrol mower an electric one will not have a long enough cable petrol mowers are heavy and lots of people find the pull cord starts difficult
some of the bushes are really high so a good extendable hedge cutter etc will cost a few hundred pounds the mower second hand over £500
it could be that DH is worried it will become his job and he doesn't want it which is a perfectly reasonable choice
with a ride on mower the lawns will take a couple of hours per week
a gardener twice a year will sort hedges
it is in cumbria it rains plenty it will not need watering ever, lawns recover even from droughts like last summers hot spell when everything was brown
There is very little you can do to make that gardener lower maintenance you are looking a 2 hours grass cutting and another hour weeding edge trimming etc
if you add tubs of flowers that is all extra time

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 22/05/2019 11:32

Oooh yes that's lovely. Turn the lawn into a wildflower meadow and plants some trees for an orchard. Fantastic.

PrimalLass · 22/05/2019 11:33

It is a lot of lawn but not much else. Good exercise every couple of weeks April to October.

DHhasahobbyanditsnotcycling · 22/05/2019 11:38

Is your DH always so lazy that a big lawn will put him off something?
Hmm

maybe DH works full time
maybe Dh doesn't want to waste an entire day every 2 week/ a month taking care of his lawn. I wouldn't, I have better things to do.

LoafofSellotape · 22/05/2019 11:39

You'll need to mow it once a week and to definitely need a ride on and factor in at least an hour plus a week. A friend has a similar size and her teenage son does it. You don't need to water a lawn so won't need sprinklers.

BumandChips · 22/05/2019 11:39

Wow that’s beautiful. I think it calls for a Mumsnet party in the garden....

sugarbum · 22/05/2019 11:40

bloody hell just buy it! and buy a ride on lawnmower. I bet thats all kinds of fun!

FrenchJunebug · 22/05/2019 11:47

oh my god the price?! you get a garage for that price in London. It's beautiful and the garden is just grass so easy to look after.

RosaWaiting · 22/05/2019 11:49

French IKR?!

I might just get that price for my outer London flat. I don't leave because of my elderly mum, but recently I'm tempted to find ways to persuade her out of London too Grin

Lochroy · 22/05/2019 11:52

Looks fab! Aside from what pp have said about the lawn, the massive hedge to the left of the gate on the way in prob needs professional trimming unless you have the ladder and tools for the job. Prob worth getting a quote!

DHhasahobbyanditsnotcycling · 22/05/2019 11:56

The prices are astonishing, aren't they?
I can't wait to sell my house in Greater London and move in a cheap area, the things you could afford there.

womanhuman · 22/05/2019 11:59

It’ll take time but it’s not hard. What do you do for exercise atm? Because if you buy this and don’t buy a ride on, this is 2 workouts a week during summer. 😀

WellTidy · 22/05/2019 11:59

If that were my garden, I would plant a load of fruit trees and bushes. They don't need much maintenance, and it would give you blossom and fruit. It would also mean less grass to mow! It looks beautiful. Keep any other new planting to a minimum and just stay on top of what you have.

allworkandnopay · 22/05/2019 12:02

I've made an viewing! You are all very encouraging thank you! You are right about the very large hedges I couldn't tackle those but I'm loving the idea of the wild meadow! There are so many other areas of lawn that would be a great change!
Yes I know the prices up here must look great to you southerners, we just take them for granted! Everywhere has its ups and downs I guess!!

Op that is not really that much, my garden is larger than that and l manage it just fine,

You have 3 options for the lawn,
Ride on mower which will probably take 45 min to cut once a week

Drive mower(i use one) takes 1hour 15 mins for my 3 tiered garden once a week

Automated mower, more costly but after set up needs no weekly maintenance.

I cut my hedges on all 3 sides with a metre long electric cutter and a tall ladder once a year, it takes a morning/ 3/4 of a day.

It is really not much for the pleasure it will give you!

Gigglinghysterically · 22/05/2019 12:11

Seems to be quite a low maintenance garden (unless I'm missing something). Mainly lawn and little else. Buy a ride-on lawnmower and do it yourself or pay someone else to do it.
Grass still needs looking after - feeding probably once per year, aerating, and regular cuts at the right height to keep it looking good though. If it isn't cared for properly though, because you have so much of it, it could end up looking rubbish.

VerbenaGirl · 22/05/2019 12:11

Gorgeous! Get a ride on mower and it will be easily kept in check.

Gigglinghysterically · 22/05/2019 12:20

@MiniCooperLover

"Is your DH always so lazy that a big lawn will put him off something?"
Just because he doesn't want looking after a big lawn to be his job, it doesn't mean that OP's DH is lazy.

The OP asks whether MNers think the garden will be too much for her.

MiniCooperLover · 22/05/2019 12:26

Gigglinghysterically, that's true though earlier in the post OP mentions her DH was worried it was too much for her to deal with and doesn't want it to become his chore. It seems a shame for that to be the reason to not view a lovely house.

FoxSquadKitten · 22/05/2019 13:00

You could always buy a goat🤷‍♀️

BlueSkiesLies · 22/05/2019 13:04

That garden is a piece of piss. There are zero plants! Zero hedges!

All you need to do is have it mowed every two weeks in summer! Then get one of the companies that come in to give it a water and feed a few times over the summer.
