Council house waiting times

munchsmum2017 · 21/05/2019 19:19

I am currently on Band A for Leeds homes and Yorkshire housing. I have been on Band A for 3 months now and my position is still fairly high ie (50s-100s). The reason I need to move is extremely urgent and personal , I understand that there is a lot of people on the housing register and I am happy and grateful to even be on there , I can understand it can take a while.

What I’m posting for is to find out any stories regarding waiting times and what priority you may of been on or are on?

Just out of interest and curiosity but also to see how long it can roughly be until I’m offered somewhere ?

Thank you Smile

50s - 100s is not very high OP, in my opinion.

AskMeHow · 22/05/2019 13:18

Flats may not have a garden, but they might be close to a park or have good public transport.

Anything with a garden is going to be in high demand. I would reconsider as you don't have years to wait.

Plinney · 22/05/2019 13:20

I'd pursue other routes if you can, whether transfer or private.

Maybe give yourself 18 months to find a transfer, and if still nothing, perhaps think re. private? Private has lots of shitty things about it, but if you find a nice landlord and a nice home, it can be better than crap social housing.

I bid sometimes, but its a miserable experience. I'm always around 150 - 200. To me that means never in a million years! I ring the Council and they say "you never know" but I think it just gives false hope to people. p.s. I live in the South.

TheRedBarrows · 22/05/2019 13:24

Have Women’s Aid been involved in supporting you to flee dv?

They can help with housing if you are still at risk.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 22/05/2019 13:27

Either some of the posters on this thread are cunts or trolls. Not sure which.
Social housing isn't a freebie, do if you are living in a council house and paying rent without depending on the benefits system you are self funding your housing. University research, really?

It is depressing to find so many people seem to think that wanting decent, safe housing with a safe space for a child to play, is a sign of entitlement.

munchsmum2017 · 22/05/2019 13:30

MyDcAreMarvel - sorry I wasn’t aware that my sons safety was important Smile ! I have been bidding on everything which is suitable I’ve literally just stated , god knows how many times, that a garden is something that I’d like for him, but I will bid on houses / maisonettes without gardens. As I’ve also said the situation has got a bit better which is why I can hold it out as if the perpetrator breaks his bail conditions which are set until October then he’d get arrested either way, whether this is just as little as him sending a text message. So thank you for your pointless advice Grin

@user2928362

Once again I understand this but my dream house isn’t a high expectation as once again I have said millions of times I would just PREFER a garden for my son, whether this is in a flat or not , IT IS A PREFERENCE ! Doesn’t mean that I will not accept something or bid on something which doesn’t have a garden , maybe re read what I have said before replying .

@AskMeHow the flat I am in at the moment has a communal garden , I love my flat but just need to move. Once again I am bidding on houses / flats / maisonettes with gardens and houses / maisonettes withoutSmile.

@Plinney it is a bit awful but fingers crossed I hope you find somewhere. I have been looking at mutual exchange and have been for a while , I’ve had time wasters and people simply just not interestedGrin but I do keep trying , additionally I have tried going private but a lot of the houses advertised are actually in or just a short walk from where I am at the moment so aren’t suitable and also a lot of landlords either don’t accept dss / housing benefit or don’t reply to the emails I have sent out expressing an interest , I don’t think a lot of landlords like letting to housing benefit tenants

Plinney · 22/05/2019 13:30

I don't think there is any need for such vile language Gimme. You sound like the troll here.

Everyone would like a nice house with a garden. Its just not available for everyone, thats the way it is.

munchsmum2017 · 22/05/2019 13:34

@theredbarrows - no they haven’t sadly , I have a support worker who is pretty useless and social services who are helping meSmile

@gimmiethecoffeeandnoonedies I am thinking the same thing SmileGrin . Thank you for your response . I am not entitled or acting like I want a perfect house in a perfect area but some of these people have that impression I want to move and a garden is a preference not a necessity, I just want a nice outdoor space for my son to play which I’m sure most people would love , I would accept anything I’m offered whether it has a garden or not Grin

Thank you for actually being understanding and seeing my viewpoint

Yes, I know lots of landlords don't like letting to housing benefits tenants, OP. It is a catch 22. Perhaps if you get some part-time work you might be in a better position at some point? Or just keep trying till you find a Landlord who will. The problem is such landlords are often the worst!

Its just not easy. You do look around and wonder how some people manage it though, so I know the feeling. But just don't put your life on hold for too long and try and keep as many options open as possible. You could try Womens Aid again, perhaps they could advise you more.

TheQueef · 22/05/2019 13:34

Cunts Gimmie any mention of Social Housing brings them out like moths to a flame.
Tis always the same bollocks subsidies and emergency accommodation only.
Two seconds of googling would correct it but then they couldn't look down on SH tenants.

@Plinney I am looking for employment and have applied for a few vacancy’s as a TA which I’m waiting for a response so fingers crossed , if I did get one I could save up at the same time as bidding and go down the shared ownership route but once again it’s all dependent on the employment as I’m assuming I wouldn’t start till September as it’s nearly the end of the school year.

I most certainly won’t put my life on hold and I am once again bidding on everything which is suitable with or without a garden , I will try women’s aid thank you for your advice Smile it means a lot !

I lived in social housing for 14 years, I am in favour of social housing. I would not put a garden before my child’s safety.

darkriver19886 · 22/05/2019 13:47

I think it depends. I was put in Silver band due to being homeless. I went into supported housing in April. I was bidding every week on any property that I was able to bid on.

At the same time quiet a few residents were also made Gold banded as they were ready to move on. They were going to apply for mine when I got offered my lovely little flat before everyone else.

Its about not being picky.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 22/05/2019 13:48

Munch, I saw you were getting a bit of a kicking from the spiteful brigade, so felt the need to wade in.

Thequeef indeed it does, I used to work in a related area and have a shit load of (old) qualifications up to post grad level. in this respect, so I actually know how the funding works. It isn't something I've made up in my head and decided to run with.

The history of post war social housing was about providing decent housing for everyone, not as a kind of reward/punishment system for the 'deserving poor'.

Lougle · 22/05/2019 13:50

We were very lucky. Our private rental was deemed unsuitable for DD1 in July 2011, and the OT decided that only a Council property would be suitable, because we needed to be able to modify it for DD1's safety. We were put in band 2.

We were warned that the type of place we needed (3 bed Parlour house (extra room downstairs) with its own garden and preferably off-road parking for safety) come up every 5-10 years in our village. But I needed to stay in our village because I also have caring responsibilities for my mother.

We finally waited just 7 months, and came 3rd out of 108 applicants for our current house. I'm not quite sure what happened about applicants 1&2, it might have been the fact that it has a wet room and DD1 would benefit from it that swung it to us. It was never explained, I just got a terse phonecall demanding documents ASAP.

DHhasahobbyanditsnotcycling · 22/05/2019 13:52

I know lots of landlords don't like letting to housing benefits tenants
It's less that they don't like, more that their mortgages don't allow them to accept them.

Waveysnail · 22/05/2019 13:57

Your situation obviously isn't that terrible if your only bidding on places with gardens Hmm

CrazyCatNerd · 22/05/2019 14:02

@rededucator

Did you mean to be so goady?

I pay "proper rent" on my council house, thanks. I pay more rent now, on a council property than I ever did on a private rental or my two mortgages. My rent isn't subsidised.

I plan to stay here forever and ever.

HTH.

munchsmum2017 · 22/05/2019 14:08

@MyDcAreMarvel - as you clearly have a hard time understanding i will explain one last time. I am bidding on houses / maisonettes / flats WITH AND WITHOUT GARDENS. I would prefer a garden , but I will accept anything I am offered . Hopefully that sinks in this time ?Smile

@Waveysnail I won’t even waste my time replying and re typing as you clearly have the same slow brain as the person I have tagged above so the same applies to you.

OP posts:
Plinney · 22/05/2019 14:11

p.s. OP. If you bid regularly i.e. every week - apparently it does help. It shows you're busy and engaged with the process, so I suppose it might be possible to move up the housing list - even if you are not A+ or Gold.
I didn't realise this. Also, keep them informed of any change in circumstances.

munchsmum2017 · 22/05/2019 14:11

@Lougle thank you for actually giving me a timing and shedding some light on your individual waiting time Smile much appreciated

@Gimmiethecoffeeandnoonedies - Thank you I appreciate it , some of them are clearly just slow at understanding something simple. I don’t blame them Grin

@darkriver19886 that’s great ! Glad you got placed somewhere and find it lovely . I’m not being picky as I’ve said maybe 1000 times , I am bidding on with and without gardens I’d just prefer a garden .

Maybe a few of you need to understand the meaning of prefer as it clearly isn’t sinking in.

without knowing the kind of property you are talking about and the market rate of each, it makes no sense at all!

munchsmum2017 · 22/05/2019 14:13

@Plinney thank you! I bid every week and I am eligible to bid on 4-5 properties a week , I bid on yorkshire housing weekly if have an eligible property and LYHA also . So hopefully some time soon I’ll be out Grin
I will most certainly get in touch with women’s aid thank youSmile
