Charged double for a prescription

Geegle · 21/05/2019 15:46

I picked up a prescription yesterday and was charged twice the normal fee, £18. The medicine is in one box but the blister packs inside have 2 different types of pills. The prescription itself said one item.
AIBU to think it’s one box, one item and therefore one £9 charge?
It’s HRT of it makes any difference [old fart emoticon]

Go back to the pharmacy. Mistakes happen a lot

araiwa · 21/05/2019 15:47

Go back to where you bought it and ask them?

daisypond · 21/05/2019 15:48

It’s correct. It’s two medications, so two charges.

imaflutteringkite · 21/05/2019 15:50

I think HRT is charged twice, I've read it on here before.

daisypond · 21/05/2019 15:51

Meant to add - it’s standard for HRT.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 21/05/2019 15:51

HRT is charged twice

DonPablo · 21/05/2019 15:51

Wow, if PP are right, get a prepayment cert!

runningme · 21/05/2019 15:57

Yes HRT can attract 2 prescription charges. Makes me mad as hell. Pre payment certificate is the way to go. This happened to my Mum when she went on HRT over 20 years ago so it’s not in any way a new thing.

loobylou10 · 21/05/2019 15:58

My HRT is a double charge. Very annoying isn't it!

Geegle · 21/05/2019 16:00

I can’t believe it’s common to be charged double for HRT! Angry If men had to go through menopause HRT would probably be free never mind double the price!!
Tell me about this pre payment thing please

So is it too different medications taken each day but put into one box to save cardboard (by the manufacturer) ? If so it's two charges

LadyWithLapdog · 21/05/2019 16:03

Only some HRTs are charged double. £18 for 6 months prescription is NOT a lot for anyone. £3 a month? Cheaper than a cup of coffee.

Geegle · 21/05/2019 16:04

stuck its 2 different hormones one of which is taken for 14 days then the other for 14 days

Geegle · 21/05/2019 16:04

Lady it’s a 3 month prescription

I was once charged double for thrush treatment as it had the pessary and the cream. I was cross but nothing I could do.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/05/2019 16:08

Geegle are you just starting on HRT? If all’s well at the 3 months check you’ll get a 6 months prescription afterwards. IMO it’s a small price to pay. You’d spend the same amount of money - easily! - on alternative stuff in Holland & Barrett.

nwybhs · 21/05/2019 16:09

Why would it 'probably' be free if men had to go through it?

Teddybear45 · 21/05/2019 16:12

Men get charged for all prescriptions too unless they have an exemption.

HariboLectar · 21/05/2019 16:12

Depending how many prescriptions you need, it might be worth getting a PPC

caughtinanet · 21/05/2019 16:18

Prescriptions aren't charged by the number of boxes, it's the number of medications surely or everyone would ask for them to be in the same box, is that what you mean?

Either way £18 for 3 months is very cheap.

Nameusernameuser · 21/05/2019 16:21

Some HRT is 2 charges, I work in pharm and this comes up all the time! Annoying but fairly cheap if you get a few months at a time. It's usually 3 months worth with HRT.

Nameusernameuser · 21/05/2019 16:22

Things like stockings are two charges aswell, because well, there's 2 of them Grin madness I know!

thenightsky · 21/05/2019 16:24

£18 for 6 months prescription is NOT a lot - I wish!

6 months' prescription would cost £108 (My GP dispensary charges £18 for each one month.

thekingfisher · 21/05/2019 16:27

apps.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc-online/patient.do this is what you need if you have more than 12 prescriptions per year works out cheaper

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/05/2019 16:27

Agree that a pre-payment card is the way forward (DH has asthma and it costs a fortune). You can pay by direct debit and it just rolls on and on. Works out at a smidge over £10 a month.
