A boring one re painting a room. Who’s BU, me or dh?

I suggested I could do all the cutting in over a day or two and then he could roll the walls when he has time at the end of the week.

He says it can’t be done that way as the walls need to be rolled while the cut-in is still wet otherwise the cut in will stand out.

I say that’s bollox. It’s the same bucket of paint so no chance of even a slight mismatch of shades and when both the cut in and the rolled parts dry they’ll be the same colour.

Who’s right? (Please say me)

No idea so will side with you lol

Cherrysoup · 19/05/2019 21:21

What’s a cut in?

LoisLittsLover · 19/05/2019 21:21

Him. Sorry

Thisisthelaststraw · 19/05/2019 21:21

Grin thanks KM

Really Lois? Why?

They will dry the same colour.

Pomegranatemolasses · 19/05/2019 21:22

I'm going to say you also. Can't understand why a delay would make a difference when it's the same paint.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/05/2019 21:23

He’s right. It will lap and look awful.

BornInAThunderstorm · 19/05/2019 21:23

Him. When you roll over the wet cut in the paints blend. If you let the cut in dry there will be a visible line, as I discovered last time I painted

HolyMilkBoobiesBatman · 19/05/2019 21:23

Sorry but I think he’s right - we did some touch ups on DC2 room when we realised that we hadn’t painted close enough behind the radiator and uncertain lights it is noticeable. But it’s only when the sun falls a certain way at the end of the day and to be fair it is a reasonably light colour so maybe a darker one wouldn’t stand out as much?

Fumnudge · 19/05/2019 21:23

Omg cutting in first so less brush strokes visible. What IS he thinking? Grin

Floatyboat · 19/05/2019 21:23

Unless he has obscenely high standards for the whole job he is being U. Can't imagine it making much difference. When I do it it often looks a bit different but I'm rubbish with a brush.

OneEpisode · 19/05/2019 21:24

The first coat should have the cut in and the rollering done at the same time. So side with dh, sorry.

Houseonahill · 19/05/2019 21:24

I think because if the cut in has dried then you will get more layers at the cut in rather than it blending out while wet if that makes sense

Thisisthelaststraw · 19/05/2019 21:24

Cherry a cut-in is when you do around the base board, ceiling edge, door frames etc

BlueMerchant · 19/05/2019 21:24

He is right. Patchy.

OldAndWornOut · 19/05/2019 21:25

I'm sure it will be fine.
I always do stuff like this bit by (slow!) bit, and it looks alright to me.
My eyes aren't so good though.

VanillaCoconutDove · 19/05/2019 21:25

It depends on the paint, but I’m leaning to him.

Farrow and ball is notorious for being unable to do a touch up. I’d think of two separate painting sessions as like carrying out a touch up, there will always be a ‘seam’ or outline.

gobbin · 19/05/2019 21:25

Unless you feather it out really well, it’ll show. I’m with your DH and will cut in and roll each wall in turn.

Janedoughnut · 19/05/2019 21:25

I'd say he's right as I think you'll get a ridge when you paint up to and over the already dried paint at the edge of the room.

moreismore · 19/05/2019 21:26

I think it partly depends on the paint and the colour. I would tend to side with you but darker colours you can sometimes see where you’ve gone over areas. Only if you look really hard though.

Won’t you do two coats of roller anyway?

livin · 19/05/2019 21:26

YABU sorry! Blush

Thisisthelaststraw · 19/05/2019 21:26

Well I had planned on showing him this thread but I won’t now 😬

FlashingLights101 · 19/05/2019 21:27

Actually, I disagree. We've been decorating these last couple of weeks and although I prefer to roll over wet cut in edges because I feel it blends better, I am also very slow at cutting in, so it had all dried by the time we rollered (I'm sure this is a word) over it. It needed several coats on the walls (because the stuff done with the brush was thicker to start with), but the end result was that I really can't tell. I'm sat here now looking at my walls, and with the 2 coats, it really makes no difference.

TBDO · 19/05/2019 21:27

Sorry OP, he’s right. If it’s not wet it won’t blend in. I discovered this the hard way when I cut in a whole room and painted the next day. Now I cut in for one wall at a time, roller, then move to next wall.
