A boring one re painting a room. Who’s BU, me or dh?

I suggested I could do all the cutting in over a day or two and then he could roll the walls when he has time at the end of the week.

He says it can’t be done that way as the walls need to be rolled while the cut-in is still wet otherwise the cut in will stand out.

I say that’s bollox. It’s the same bucket of paint so no chance of even a slight mismatch of shades and when both the cut in and the rolled parts dry they’ll be the same colour.

Who’s right? (Please say me)

DP is correct. I have recently done it your way and it looks awful. Clear difference in the cutting in and the rest of the wall

PickAChew · 19/05/2019 22:34

Cutting in dries streaky and lumpy where it's not fully blended by a roller. I also find that it sometimes takes an extra coat for solid coverage because of the streaky issue.

It would be better, if time is limited, for you to do a coat, including cutting in, then him to do the second coat.

PickAChew · 19/05/2019 22:39

And if you're off work with a bad back, you shouldn't be doing any of it.

MitziK · 19/05/2019 22:43

You could use this as an easy Brownie point scoring exercise.

'I've looked online and found out that, yes, darling, you are right'.

He does a victory lap of the garden at this momentous occasion, you get a room without noticeable cutting in marks (I did all mine as a single wall at a time and it looks perfect) - AND next time you are right and he disagrees, you can say 'if I were wrong and you were right, I would say so, dear - just like I did when you were right about the painting'.

YesQueen · 19/05/2019 22:44

I did all the cutting in first on my hallway and you can't tell (it dried as I was v slow!) but I feathered it really really well

redastherose · 19/05/2019 23:07

He's not right, you are. I've done this loads of times and you can't see the difference.

Parvuli · 19/05/2019 23:09

It’ll be fine as long as when you cut in, you sort of feather it out towards the middle of the wall rather than doing a neat line.

kissmelittleass · 19/05/2019 23:18

I'm afraid he's right Blushone of my rooms needs redoing because I did what you're suggesting and it is very noticeable and that's with a magnolia paint.

PenelopeFlintstone · 19/05/2019 23:32

......I can see the brush strokes around the sockets

Because of this I cut in after. Roller as close as you can and then fill in the gaps. You get a much smaller cut-in area and don't get that frame effect. This matters especially for strong colours, probably not so much for light ones. I didn't make it up; it's a thing and you can see it online.

beautifullama · 19/05/2019 23:35

Paint with a sheen will show a difference unfortunately so you are best doing one wall at a time. The cutting in will stand out as though the wall is framed in a picture.

Pk37 · 19/05/2019 23:40

Your dh is right.
My dh and I have done this so many times and if you don’t do it properly then you can see lines where you have stopped and then he’ll have to go over it abit so that small strip with have double the paint .
It’s happened to us so many times ,most recently was last month and we had to do 3 bloody coats in the end

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/05/2019 06:50

If you add floetrol (other brands available) you can eliminate lapping but you still have to do it all on the same day.

It looks better though.

wombat1a · 20/05/2019 07:13

He is right.

JenMumma · 20/05/2019 09:13

I really want to be on your side but he's right 😢😂 xx

Ariela · 20/05/2019 10:15

AsAs he is right (IMO), it's a shame your back is now far worse so you cannot do ANY painting isn't it?
He'll have to do it his way.

altiara · 20/05/2019 12:29

Soft sheen paint will make it more noticeable. I’d do it all on the same day, well i’d get DH to do it all while I protected my back Smile
