To find SATs joke not very funny?

A primary school teacher played a prank on the whole of year 6 just after their SATs had finished by telling them they had another exam the next day. They actually assembled the kids and "explained" why they had not told them about it before! Then the joke was revealed and the kids had a post-SATs treat.

I think this is a bit mean and not very funny in what could have been a stressful week for some children. AIBU?

Were any children harmed or upset with their treat?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 16/05/2019 20:28

Um.... I think you are over thinking this. Did they tell them announce the treat straight after their joke, I presume? Can't really see the problem, sounds mildly amusing to me.

Geminijes · 16/05/2019 20:29

YABU.

The SAT's were over so no more stress. The children were rewarded with a treat.

Not many schools treat the children after their SAT's so think your children are lucky, shows the school appreciates how stressful the SAT's are.

I think thats truly awful :(

My daughter would have been really confused by the change in plan, and doesnt like ti when she cant trust the people she's supposed to be able to trust.

I just dont find "tricks " funny. Its in the same category as making fun of people

Especially with all the anxiety and build up around sats. Im surprised they did it. Ive n ot heard of it before.

Kokapetl · 16/05/2019 20:31

Apparently not in that none of them said anything. Maybe I am overthinking it. Some of my friends kids get really anxious about things their teachers say though.

Also most schools have an end of sats treat do they?

Tricking kids into thinking they ahd a test they werent expecting after a year of fussing about tests really is mean.

Buildalegohouse · 16/05/2019 20:32

Did any of the snowflakes melt?

Houseonahill · 16/05/2019 20:32

YABU it was a 5 minute joke, no one was harmed, everyone got a treat.

UnicornBrexit · 16/05/2019 20:34

I couldn't get upset about 'might have's' and certainly not over a third had story

mouldyhousemouldylife · 16/05/2019 20:35

Oh no I hope the children are ok after experiencing this injustice!

KneelJustKneel · 16/05/2019 20:35

I would definitely complain so they didnt do it in future. But it would have been quite traumatic for my bright but anxious (pos asd) child.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 16/05/2019 20:36

Why are the children getting stressed over an exam that only really affects the school? Are their parents putting pressure on them?

AloneLonelyLoner · 16/05/2019 20:40

I'm confused. Aren't SATs a school-related test. If kids are getting so anxious about these things then something is going wrong. Parents need to be instilling in their kids from a young age that tests such as these are essentially bullshit. Kids need to grow up with a healthy side eye for exams (and I'm talking as someone who has taken hundreds and has two degrees so I'm not an exam hater), just anxiety at this age comes from somewhere. And I'd be looking at the home, not the school.

WheresAllTheGoodInTheWorld · 16/05/2019 20:40

I'd of passed them a fake paper. Yes I know I'm truly horrid. But in my family we've always played horrid tricks on each other. And we've all survived..

donquixotedelamancha · 16/05/2019 20:41

I think thats truly awful

What words do you use for, say a robbery or a car accident?
What have you got left to employ for rapes and murders?
Presumably you have nothing left to employ for the war crimes and child torture?

If 'a joke I don't like' counts as truly awful then I think you need to recalibrate your scale of human misery.

HomeMadeMadness · 16/05/2019 20:42

I think saying they had another exam the next day was a bit poorly judged; while most kids probably weren't phased there were bound to be a few who spent the entire evening and night really anxious about the exam.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/05/2019 20:43

YABU it was a 5 minute joke, no one was harmed, everyone got a treat.

But this was a teacher. a teacher!!!! They can't have a personality or interact in a human way with students. Think of the children.

Did you miss that some people don't find this funny???!!!!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 16/05/2019 20:44

I think it was a bit of fun and they are going to get a treat. It would have been wrong if the teacher had said they had failed there sats or something but not that

BlueJava · 16/05/2019 20:44

I'd be annoyed! There was a teacher in my DS's previous school who played silly pranks like this a few times. He thought it was ok to do so because "they had a treat afterwards". Exactly the same guy who used to complain that "sometimes they don't listen". No they won't listen to you if they don't feel they can believe you 100% of the time! I was happy to share my view at parents' evening when he told me that my son forgot his PE kit a lot even though he'd told him he'd have detention.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 16/05/2019 20:45

Their not there

HappyDinosaur · 16/05/2019 20:46

I think it's brilliant! They'll enjoy telling others about it too I suspect! x

It was mean to tell them they had another exam the next day as some would have been upset and worried but saying it as a joke in the morning just before the treat wouldn't have been a problem as much.

HappyDinosaur · 16/05/2019 20:48

No idea why there's a kiss on that post Blush

Houseonahill · 16/05/2019 20:50

It was a 5 minute joke (if that) they weren't told it and then came in the next day to find out it was a joke, there was no evenings filled with worry.
