To hate the Police doing this.

The police in my area are very active on Facebook and frequently post mugshots of people they have convicted.
These are often of clearly vulnerable people ie with really poor dental care, acne or disabilities. The photos invariably attract the most awful comments from the public. Always based around appearances.
Sometimes the "convicts" are little more than kids themselves and I'm guessing they would benefit more from help/rehab than ridicule.
I am honestly starting to wonder if the police are doing this for their own amusement, but in doing so I think they are guilty of spreading a nasty and bullying culture.

They had stocks in the old days.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 16/05/2019 19:35

Simple solution.
Don't want to be photographed by police, don't get in trouble with the police.

I have little sympathy for criminals, less for habitual ones. It's alright worrying about the rights of a burglar, how about the rights of their victim?
Crime ruins the victims life, leaves them mentally scarred for life, fuck the criminals. Think about their rights as soon as they think bout everyone else's.

Serin · 16/05/2019 19:36

And public beheadings Hmm

Wow 3 cop bashing threads a day.
Court convictions are in the public domain. They are often reported in local papers.

Coulddowithanap · 16/05/2019 19:38

Totally agree with monkey

paintwater · 16/05/2019 19:39

I’m not sure I understand why bad teeth and acne make them ‘clearly vulnerable’

Passthecherrycoke · 16/05/2019 19:41

I sort of agree OP. I’m not sure what the value in the hundreds of comments criticising their appearance actually is, and it happens on my forces local FB too.

The criminals themselves likely don’t give a damn. It’s about whether the professional
Police service should be doing this

Manclife1 · 16/05/2019 19:42

Since when has a spotty face and poor dental hygiene been a disability or make you vulnerable?!

Passthecherrycoke · 16/05/2019 19:45

Noticeably poor dental hygiene is often connected to addiction to drink or drugs- mixed with crime almost certainly so- I’m sure people realise that?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 16/05/2019 19:46

The police will be doing it to show you their faces and warn you of their criminal convictions.
What other people post below the pictures has nothing to do with why the police post them.

Every force should do the same. Or should we hide and protect the criminals from some mean words? Poor little lambkins, ballsy enough to rob people, burgle homes, assault people etc etc but can't handle being called a toothless gimp on Facebook.

Serin · 16/05/2019 19:50

I suppose the one that got to me more than most is a young lad who is being ridiculed on a website tonight and in between the sarcastic remarks about his hair and his face are comments from his friends who are saying they tried to access mental health services for him but no one was willing to help.
It just seems so wrong and unprofessional.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 16/05/2019 19:55

It’s hardly the polices fault that people comment on their appearance. Are they only allowed to show images of good looking people then?

queenMab99 · 16/05/2019 19:55

The admin of the Facebook page could stop comments being posted, if the pictures were just to warn the public. I really dislike this encouragement of hatred and ridicule of others.

SoCallMeMaybe · 16/05/2019 19:56

Oh they definitely do it on purpose. I can’t get excited about it.

Passthecherrycoke · 16/05/2019 19:58

Yes I agree they just delete or turn off comments. No need to stop the photos but keep an official police page a bit more professional

Serin · 16/05/2019 19:59

Nicknacky, the admin of our local force actually said they would try to get some better looking "talent" soon.

OP posts:
Sagradafamiliar · 16/05/2019 20:00

I hate it. I find it unethical and unprofessional.
I also can't believe the comments they allow to stand which are xenophobic, racist and victim-blaming. When people go missing, often teenagers, there are always such stupid comments on what needs to be done/they must be attention seeking.
I hope if anything ever happens to me or the kids, God forbid, that it isn't plastered on Facebook for idiots to pee themselves over.

twoheaped · 16/05/2019 20:02

The pictures our county police put up are diabolical, due to rhe poor quality CCTV.

The comments are hilarious. There are some very funny, witty people out there.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/05/2019 20:04

Also think it's unethical and unprofessional. It's just a Victorian freakshow in the same vein as Jeremy Kyle and we all know how that ended.

Bread and circuses.

Nicknacky · 16/05/2019 20:07

So posters will be happy if no photos are ever published then? Of sex offenders, house breakers etc?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 16/05/2019 20:08

If they banned the publication of criminals photos, it'll make conservatives press junkets impossible...

DorisDaisyMay · 16/05/2019 20:11

I agree - YANBU. A society is only as civilised as how it treats its most ‘unworthy’ of citizens. At a local level most modern day policing is nothing to do with solving crimes and everything to do with coming into contact with the most socially vulnerable who are locked in a perpetual cycle of poverty, lack of self control and dysfunctional relationships. It is a merry-go-round of frustration. However, the ‘shame’ route is so abhorrent to me and will not do anything to stop the root causes. Instead, as the Facebook comments prove, it only dehumanises and continues to add barriers to social change.

TSSDNCOP · 16/05/2019 20:12

Having the photos published doesn’t bother me. If you’re convicted, people should know what a nasty little fucker you are.

The comments should be disabled though.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 16/05/2019 20:12

They could always publish the photos and disable comments?

UnicornBrexit · 16/05/2019 20:12

It's a roll out across all police forces. Our local ones are clogging my FB feed every single day with their heroics. Only we never get to see who they caught, we have to wait 6 months for the local paper for stories and mugshots.

I want o pull you up on your OP though. The police don't convict people. The courts do that. So if you think all the crims and perps need rehab and therapy, I suggest you run that one by your local magistrate.
