To ask if you know a cheaper version of Farrow & Ball shaded white?!

We need to redecorate a room that was originally painted shaded white (Farrow & Ball) but wondered if anyone knows a cheaper version that's a similar shade as we like the colour but not the price/durability of F&B!

Go to a place that does colour matching. Will be more durable and a lot cheaper. Dulux decorating centres do paint matching.

PillowTalker · 15/05/2019 19:14

Can you use a paint matching service? Pretty sure B&Q scan a small sample and make the paint in store.

Means you'd need to cut a little out from somewhere discreet though

IsItTimeForGinYet · 15/05/2019 19:15

Johnson's paint are the best at matching. If you go to one of their stockists you just need the farrow and ball number and the paint will be mixed. Better quality, cheaper price and good match.

Kattyy · 15/05/2019 19:17

Just currently taken the Farrow and Ball to Leylands colour matching. Well, the builders did. And it's perfect!

ShesABelter · 15/05/2019 19:21

Crown colour matches farrow and ball as does Johnson's.

sophiasnail · 15/05/2019 21:37

We got them to scan F&B wedgewood lilac at b&q and it came out really nice.

MadSweeney · 15/05/2019 22:02

Second Johnstones. They even have a list behind the counter with all the F&B formula codes for the machines.

Suze1621 · 15/05/2019 22:11

Another recommendation for Johnstone's - perfect colour match, excellent quality paint and very affordable.

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 15/05/2019 22:12

They can match the colour, but it's much harder to match the finish - farrow and ball has a distinctive flat, dense pigment and a really even finish.

So it won't look exactly the same - you'll probably get away with it if you're repainting the whole room but it will be very noticible if you just do some walls/ touch ups.

Gth1234 · 15/05/2019 23:35

B&Q nearly white.

how on earth can you tell the difference?

montepulcianos · 16/05/2019 19:37

Thanks all. It doesn't need to be an exact match, just something similar. It's quite hard to describe the colour of shaded white and I'd say it's more of a grey than a white! I wondered if anyone had found something similar themselves they could suggest. Planning to paint the whole room as it needs a spruce up so will be fine if it's not a perfect match.

Dulux centres have the actual codes to make up F&B colours without even scanning them.

Misnomer · 16/05/2019 20:31

We use Leyland as they were recommended by various decorators. They've always been fine and absolutely a good enough match, as far as I am concerned.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/05/2019 20:33

We used Johnstone’s, we went to a decorator and she said it was better than Dulux. It was that or mylands in her opinion.

Jedeye · 16/05/2019 20:33

I went to Johnson’s today. They have the codes already, no scanning. It was an EXACT match.

Be careful of Valspar at B&Q a lot of issues with paint odours - cats pee. Google and read up!

NewUsername1234 · 16/05/2019 20:37

Dulux Egyptian Cotton is perhaps a bit warmer/creamier but somewhat similar.

Andromeida59 · 16/05/2019 22:01

There's no point doing colour matching. You may very well end up with the same shade but it won't have the same depth of pigmentation.

SymphonyofShadows · 16/05/2019 22:06

I’ve just had some F&B Downpipe colour matched with Dulux and it was perfect. I’ve got it elsewhere in the house and I honestly can’t tell the difference.

stucknoue · 16/05/2019 22:08

Dulux professional paint at the decorating centres is far better than most paint, our painters said it goes further too

Edwardbear1 · 16/05/2019 22:27

Decoratingcentreonline.co.uk

Helen will colour match anything and the paint is amazing.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 16/05/2019 22:31

Laura Ashley paints are v good. Try cotton white.

I've used that and it doesnt smell like cats pee. It goes on really shit if you use a brush though despite mixing and it needed 4 twatting coats to get an even finish with a roller. Never, ever again. I've had better results with value paint.

Jedeye · 16/05/2019 22:41

gamer I read that it starts to smell in the summer not when it first goes on the walls. Might be sorted now though but I didn’t want to take a chance Shock

gamerchick · 16/05/2019 22:51

Hopefully it's been sorted since then. Thankfully my house doesnt respond to summer, it's always like a fridge so I might get away with it Grin

Still, I wouldn't use it again because it's shit paint to use. Ty for the heads up so the cat doesnt get the blame.
