So twice I’ve come back to my room on holiday and the maid has already been (clean towels, bed made etc)

Then I’m just getting a drink and getting changed and I hear a knock at the door and someone just walks in (don’t give me chance to open the door) and says house keeping, how was your service?

Confused and then they quickly leave

OP posts:
NoSauce · 15/05/2019 20:53

The tip thing isn’t something I would have ever thought they were coming back for.

I’ve never tipped every day. Is this a thing? Always leave a generous tip and a little note at the end of the trip but not during.

MotherOfGodFella · 15/05/2019 20:54

Yes all hotel threads bring out the same low opinions of cleaning staff. You know we all clean the mugs with the toilet cloth and wipe round the bath with used towels? Probably touch the clean linen with germy hands as well. And leave other guests urine in the kettle.

Slicedpineapple · 15/05/2019 21:07

What country are you staying in? Some places (e.g. Mexico) are tipping countries, where tips are expected. In these sorts of places we tip the maid every second day unless we have been messy and then will to it daily.

If it's the UK I would find it odd.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 15/05/2019 21:10

I worked in hotels most of my life until recently. the housekeeping staff service the rooms and a supervisor then checks each room to check standards are met. Sometimes guests return or are in the room, asking If your service is ok is a standard question in these circumstances.

Afternoonteadelight · 15/05/2019 21:12

I prefer to tip daily. It might not always be the same person and I don’t think they’ll pool their tips

Ontheboardwalk · 15/05/2019 21:13

Where are you staying?

barryfromclareisfit · 15/05/2019 21:14

OP, that has happened to me. They have caught me naked more than once.

JaneEyre07 · 15/05/2019 21:15

We stayed at a very naice hotel in NYC and they attended your room at least x3 a day, but there was a LED display by the door you pressed if you didn't want to be disturbed. It was lovely having the bed turned down and the pillows sorted before getting in it and the coffee pods topping up! It was a PITA leaving a tip though so often..........

NotTheMrMenAgain · 15/05/2019 21:16

It's not odd, it's happened to me lots of times - generally it's just junior management checking the housekeeping has been done properly and checking we're happy with everything. Nothing to worry about.

Bluntness100 · 15/05/2019 21:18

It's not for a tip, it's a supervisor checking the rooms been done right.

Buttons4me · 15/05/2019 21:20

It would of been the supervisor checking that the room had been cleaned and was of standard that's what usually happens unless the cleaner has become a self checker to check over the room.

WeeDangerousSpike · 15/05/2019 21:22

Always tip daily. You get a better service if they know you tip. If you leave it till the last day and give one big tip you only get bog standard service.

NoSauce · 15/05/2019 21:23

What sort of things do you mean by a better service for tipping daily?

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/05/2019 21:38

This is why I prefer self catering to hotels. I got fed up of the housekeeping consistently trying to get into my room every time I nipped back to drop something off, get changed, pick something up or have a nap.

Honestly you can be out for 11.5 out of 12 hours but the few minutes you're in the room, they always seem to be banging on the door needing to provide some completely unnecessary service like unmaking the bed they made a few hours earlier, replacing all the stupid cushions I took off the bed so I could actually use it or cleaning an already clean bathroom. Please, just leave me in peace, how much do I need to tip to ensure that?

NoSauce · 15/05/2019 21:43

Just put a do not disturb sign on the door when you’re in if you don’t want disturbing, they’re only doing their job. I love hotels!

WeeDangerousSpike · 15/05/2019 22:15

What sort of things do you mean

I've had everything from just better cleaning, more thorough sweeping etc when I've not left a tip one day, but have the next (not on purpose, but it did let me inadvertently compare the service) to elaborate towel sculptures and our pajamas / nightie laid out on the bed as though they were a couple dancing (not as creepy as it sounds - honest) extra chocolates / tea and coffee stuff, that kind of thing.

Ontheboardwalk · 15/05/2019 22:22

Hotels in uk where I know the reception staff have got a few boxes of chocs from me for looking out for me at check in

Hotels not in the uk the cleaning staff always get the currency I’ve got left

Really posh hotels (not very often) I’ve occasionally had supervisor ringing or knocking to check if everything is ok. I’ve never had a supervisor letting themselves in though

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 15/05/2019 22:25

Just lock your door......

BrainScience · 15/05/2019 22:26

I’ve never left a daily housekeeping tip in a hotel, I had no idea that was a thing Confused. I do generally leave a tip at the end of my stay, depending on whether they’ve actually done a decent job though. What I do bloody hate is people rushing over to take your bag and then you have to give them a tip. I’ve perfected the ‘I’m fine thanks’ and march off before they can grab it off me.

We’re they not just doing the evening turn down service? Sometimes they do it early if they think you’ve already gone out.

GlamGiraffe · 15/05/2019 22:30

@CurlyhairedAssassin - been all over the world and in some places they definitely do come unfortunately early for turndowns.in one hotel in Mauritius they constantly arrived while we were in the bathroom just back from the beach and in Tenerife in October came long before dinner (just as examples.) My husband is frequently getting walked in on naked as a result.its not that uncommon.always remember the do not disturb sign!- clearly we don't!!

@Iwantacookie id love to say it was a typo but, i was totally just being bad at typingGrin. I cannot cope with auto correct. Just imagine the germs and substances lurking on a hotel doorShock

Unfinishedkitchen · 15/05/2019 22:32

It would never occur to me to leave a tip in a hotel I’ve already paid for.

To be honest all these stories about being caught naked and panicking about whether you’ve locked the door lest some overly keen housekeeper and their manager are lurking outside ready to barge in have convinced me to stick with self catering.

The barging in and queuing for the buffet aren’t selling it to me.

Absofuckinglutely · 15/05/2019 22:42

Thinking about all the hotel stays I've had over the years, and not once has it occurred to me to leave a tip, let alone daily.

God....the housekeeping staff have probably cleaned my cups with the toilet cloth in retaliation. Confused

As for the aibu, I think it was probably a supervisor checking on how the room was done. Not on just to waltz in though - you could have been shagging doing anything!

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 15/05/2019 22:50

Where do you leave your tip daily? How do they know it's a tip and not just your loose change?

Grumpymug · 16/05/2019 00:33

Yes all hotel threads bring out the same low opinions of cleaning staff. You know we all clean the mugs with the toilet cloth and wipe round the bath with used towels? Probably touch the clean linen with germy hands as well. And leave other guests urine in the kettle.

Well those things don't happen in the hotel I work at, or in fact any hotel I've worked at. Not that anyone would ever listen to the people that actually do the job, nope.
