So twice I’ve come back to my room on holiday and the maid has already been (clean towels, bed made etc)

Then I’m just getting a drink and getting changed and I hear a knock at the door and someone just walks in (don’t give me chance to open the door) and says house keeping, how was your service?

Confused and then they quickly leave

I've had people in hotels coming round to check that the maid's done their job properly, or whether the minibar keeps topping up. Can't you just put a "Do not disturb" sign up?

Acis · 15/05/2019 17:32

Tipping every day? What madness is this?

Herbella · 15/05/2019 17:35

Crikey, I don't stay in hotels much, but it had never occured to me that I should tip someone for doing their job.... it's different when it's my hairdresser or a waitress, but someone in a none-customer facing role?

HollowTalk · 15/05/2019 17:37

Stick the Do Not Disturb sign on your door whenever you don't want them to come in.

FizzyGreenWater · 15/05/2019 17:39

Wow a big NO to using their key to walk into a let room without knocking!!!

Complain.

viques · 15/05/2019 17:40

herbella my second ever holiday job as a wide eyed 15 year old was chambermaiding in a reasonably posh hotel. it was an eye opener into the nasty habits of some people. So I have always tried to keep hotel rooms reasonably tidy, without revolting mess to clear up, and I tip because I know what the job can entail.

Rafflesway · 15/05/2019 17:43

Acis don't worry! Not talking a fortune. I'm Irish raised in Yorkshire, not American 😂

Usually only the equivalent of around £1.50 approx per day so adds up to about £20 total by the end of the holiday for the maid. (Their wages in the Far East/Caribbean etc. are usually pretty poor and they are normally so lovely and hard working.)

They are maybe not customer facing but I for one am happy to come back to a spotless hotel room. Housekeeping work damn hard for the pittance they get paid.

ihatethecold · 15/05/2019 18:10

@Dafspunk.

what is derailed?

GlamGiraffe · 15/05/2019 18:21

Lick the door?
Niche in on door ?
Lots of hotels do a turn down service (open the bed and put a mat on the floor next to bed)anytime from About 5pm onwards, it's usually at the very inconvenient time youre getting ready to go out!!
What type of hotel is it? Upmarket?
Stick on the do not disturb sign or put something in front of the inside of the door like a rolled towel or your case to stop them marching straight in.

Waterandlemonjuice · 15/05/2019 18:24

It is weird and it's not on at all. I always put the do not disturb sign on when I'm in the room.

NoSauce · 15/05/2019 18:25

I’ve had this in certain hotels, I don’t think it’s for a tip, ime they just do another quick tidy up, change towels if need be, rinse any cups etc.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/05/2019 18:30

A proper turn down service is done while you’re at dinner so never at 5-6pm, what the hell is the point in that? They are supposed to close your curtains, put the side lights on, pull back the bed clothes, replace any bottles of water/tea bags you may need for morning etc. some of them leave a little chocolate on the bed etc Never had one with a mat on the floor next to the bed?! Confused

As for tipping the maid £1.50 a day.... How many rooms would they do? I really don’t know but if everyone tipped that each day and they do say, 40 rooms a day, that’s £60 a day. Working 5 days a week that’s £300 a week. £1200 in just tips? Really? That’s more than some of us get paid as salary.

Fraxion · 15/05/2019 18:32

Usually for turndown they always knock. If you are in they ask if you want turndown, extra towels etc. I have never had anyone just walk in.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/05/2019 18:34

Actually they don’t probably clean as many as 40 a day but still, it would be a fair amount in tips if everyone tipped £1.50 a room daily.

NoSauce · 15/05/2019 18:35

I’ve had it before turndown too, when I’ve gone back to my room after lunch someone had been in AGAIN! Then come back for turndown. Only in a very upmarket hotel though.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 15/05/2019 19:19

I would've thought it was the person coming to restock the mini bar and check towels, they often do that twice a day. We often tip a pound or two a day, it's not ok but even the nicest resorts in some countries post their staff very little, so if they can make £60 a day in tips good luck to them, £20 or so over a week isn't much when you're on holiday.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 15/05/2019 19:19

*pay

Iwantacookie · 15/05/2019 19:35

@glamgiraffe please say that wasn't a typo Grin has images of op on her knees licking the door handle

MotherOfGodFella · 15/05/2019 20:22

Please stop saying “maid” or “chambermaid”. It’s 2019 people. I’m a housekeeper in a hotel along with a large group of other housekeepers of both sexes and I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t refer to the 6’3” lads as “maids”.

Dafspunk · 15/05/2019 20:26

@ihatethecold Film where couple who are having an affair rendezvous in a hotel but 5 minutes after they enter their room, thugs bust in and beat up the guy and rape the woman. The couple can’t report the crime because of the affair. The moral of the story is always lock your hotel room door behind you.

MrsExpo · 15/05/2019 20:33

Speaking as someone who once had this happen when we had nipped back to the room for a bit of “relaxation” ..... Blush Blush ..... I’d recommend locking yourself in when in a hotel room ....

ihatethecold · 15/05/2019 20:37

@Dafspunk.

Might give that film a miss 😬

Isthisafreename · 15/05/2019 20:46

@napalmskies - I would have left a good tip on my last day.

Much better to leave smaller tips every day as the maid who generally does the room may miss out if they're on a day off.

Grumpymug · 15/05/2019 20:49

Wow, some people have a really low opinion of housekeeping don't you?

I doubt it was for a tip, to put her feet up, or the like. It was probably the supervisor doing a check back on the room to make sure it was standard - because that's her job and was told by reception you were out (obviously mistakenly) I'm a duty manager in a small, private hotel and standard checking rooms is part of my job, both 'tidies' and full clean for new guests. We do them randomly to ensure that standards are being met.
Totally agree she should have knocked though, that's a standard for any room, occupied or not Because sometimes mistakes happen.
